Based on closing prices, the S&P 500 (SPX) has recovered 61.8% of the losses from last week. More importantly, the index held initial trendline support off the lows since late July. With a couple of higher lows and a flat top, it still appears the index is working on a bullish ascending triangle. These formations typically are continuation in nature and therefore are extensions of the prior trend (which in this case was higher). It is also possible the SPX is working on a less-common bullish base-on-base pattern that started about five months ago. A clean (strong) breakout above the 7,820 region would complete both formations and open the door for a possible rally above 8,000.

The Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) added to its strong gains on Monday, poking its head into all-time high territory for the first time since June 2. This is not a breakout just another strong day -- and the ETF will complete a multi-month bullish, continuous inverse head-and-shoulders and/or a bullish cup-with-handle formation. Semiconductor stocks have ripped higher over the past three days after running in place for several weeks. The major semi-ETFs (SMH, SOXX) have broken their downtrends and completed three-wave ABC bottoms, and could be working on multi-month bases. MPWR jumped 8%, SNDK and ALAB added 7%, and MU and STX were up 5%. As well, Healthcare got a lift as biotech stocks (IBB, XBI) are back on the radar screens of many investors.
