What is Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR) in Term Insurance?

Claim settlement ratio (CSR) is the percentage of claims that an insurance provider settles in a year out of the total claims. It can be understood easily by learning how insurance companies follow certain rules and regulations before settling an insurance claim, in case a policyholder passes away during the policy tenure.

Claims can be denied, especially when there are some red flags in the policy draft that might go against certain policy requirements. Therefore, when it comes to life insurance, you need to be sure that you fill out the necessary paperwork correctly and choose an insurer that has a proven track record of settling the major portion of the claims received on an annual basis.

Claim Settlement Ratio can serve as a reliable metric to determine if a certain policy and insurer is the right choice for you.

The primary purpose of a life insurance plan, especially term insurance , is to provide financial support to your family, in case something happens to you. When you purchase a term plan or any other insurance product with a high claim settlement ratio:

  • You can be assured that the entire experience of claim filing to disbursal will be simple, convenient, and transparent.
  • In case of an unexpected mishap, your loved ones will have the assurance of a quick disbursal of the life insurance benefits.

How is Claim Settlement Ratio Calculated?

The calculation of the claim settlement ratio of an insurance company is based on the number of claims it settles out of the total claims it receives in a financial year. The following is the formula to calculate CSR:

Claim Settlement Ratio Formula

Claim Settlement Ratio (%) = (Total Claims Settled / Total Claims Received) x 100

In other words, this percentage reflects how many of the total claims an insurer received in a given year were successfully paid out to eligible nominees. The higher the number, the more reliable the insurer.

Example of Claim Settlement Ratio Calculation

Suppose an insurer receives 1000 claims in one financial year and settles 998 of them. Using the formula:

(998 / 1000) x 100 = 99.8%
This means the insurer paid out on 99.8% of the claims it received in that financial year.

Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Term Insurance Plan Beyond Claim Settlement Ratio

Although it's a good place to start, you shouldn't rely just on the claim settlement ratio. Examining a number of additional factors that impact the value and reliability of your policy coverage is part of a thorough assessment of a term insurance plan.

  • Claim settlement time: If it takes months for an insurer to process and pay out a claim, a high CSR is meaningless. Verify the typical time it takes to settle a claim once all the paperwork has been completed. An unexpectedly delayed claim assessment due to unknown reasons could add on to your nominee’s financial trouble.
  • Amount settlement ratio: As a proportion of the total amount claimed, this indicator calculates the total value of claims paid out. On high-value plans, an insurer can routinely underpay while settling 99 percent of claims. Always check this figure alongside the CSR, especially if you are opting for a large sum assured.
  • Customer service experience: The quality of assistance your nominee gets throughout the claims procedure is crucial. For help with claims, look through consumer ratings, IRDAI grievance data, and independent reviews. An otherwise excellent CSR can become a stressful encounter if the claims team is unresponsive.
  • Policy terms and exclusions: Each term plan has terms that specify what is and isn't covered. Before purchasing, carefully review the policy documents. To prevent surprises when filing a claim, pay special attention to exclusions, waiting periods for certain conditions, and any limitations on the death benefit.
  • Solvency ratio: All life insurers must maintain a minimum solvency ratio of 1.5, as required by IRDAI. This shows their capacity to pay policyholders. An insurer that has a solvency ratio much higher than 1.5 is better able to pay out big claims and withstand economic downturns without experiencing any operational disruptions.
  • Riders and add-on benefits: Although the basic term plan covers death, including correct riders significantly enhances your protection. Examine the riders that your insurer offers, such as disability, accidental death, critical illness, and premium waivers. Also, assess how simple the rider claim procedure is in comparison to the primary product.

What is an Ideal Claim Settlement Ratio for Term Insurance?

There is no single ‘ideal’ claim settlement ratio, but a higher and consistent ratio is generally better. In the Indian life-insurance market, many major insurers already report individual death claim settlement ratios above 95%, and several are around 99%. So a buyer should treat CSR as a screening metric, not as the only basis for selection. It is better to compare consistency across years, claim timelines, solvency position, product fit, and customer service quality as well.

The CSR is not fixed and can fluctuate with each passing year, depending on the number of claims received and adjusted. However, insurers with a CSR of 95 or more are regarded as reliable, as this indicates they can effectively pay their claims over the long term. For example, Axis Max Life Insurance reported a death claim settlement ratio of 99.8% during FY 2025-2026, demonstrating a strong track record and reassuring nominees of smoother claim settlements. Nevertheless, the claim settlement ratio is not the sole criterion to consider when choosing a term insurance plan. The insurer's turnaround time for paying claims, customer reviews and feedback, the adequacy of the sum assured, and the affordability of the premium are other factors that should be considered. The combination of these factors helps make a more balanced and better decision.

Key Factors That Affect Claim Settlement Ratio

A claim settlement ratio of 100% is only possible if an insurer settles all the claims it has received in a financial year. However, this typically does not happen and there are various factors including actions of policyholders that affect the claim settlement ratio including the ones mentioned below:

  • Failure to disclose relevant information:Failing to share essential details, such as lifestyle habits, pre-existing medical conditions, or past illnesses, can lead to the claim rejection later.
  • Fraudulent claims: The insurance company may reject a claim if they have doubts about its authenticity. These fraudulent claims not only increase costs for the policyholder but also lead to a lower claim settlement ratio.
  • Premiums not paid on time:If the premiums are not paid on time and the policy lapses, the claims may be delayed or rejected.
  • Proper Documentation:Missing documents at the time of claim submission can lead to claim rejection resulting in a lower claim settlement ratio.
  • Policy exclusions:Each policy offers specific terms and exclusions. Therefore, if these requirements are not met, the claim will be rejected.

The above list is illustrative, not exhaustive and there may be many other reasons why claim rejection may happen. However, every rejected claim, no matter what the reason, leads to a reduction in the claim settlement ratio of the insurer.

Why is Claim Settlement Ratio Important?

Buying a life insurance policy is a long-term endeavour. Not only do you have to pay a significant amount of term insurance premiums over a specific payment tenure to avail of the policy benefits but you also have to be sure that your insurance policy documentation is well-rounded so that it doesn’t get rejected.

Thus, you need to compare and purchase a life insurance plan from an insurer with a high claim settlement ratio. Claim Settlement Ratio is a reliable metric that can help you determine if a certain insurance company is trustworthy or not and that your family would not have to move from pillar to post in getting the insurance benefit after your untimely demise.

How To Get Your Claim To Settle Smoothly?

The procedure to raise a term insurance claim can be different for different insurance companies. Therefore, you need to ensure that your insurer accepts online claims so that your nominee can raise one as and when required right from their home.

  • Disclose all information honestly at the time of purchase. The most frequent cause of claim rejection is failure to disclose smoking, high-risk employment, or pre-existing conditions. To avoid this scenario, make sure your proposal form is correct and comprehensive.
  • Keep your nominee details updated. The settlement can be delayed or become difficult in case the nominees’ details are missing. Therefore, make sure you add your nominee in all your policies.
  • Inform your nominee about the policy.Your family must be aware that you have a policy in place, where the papers are, and steps to submit a claim. Many legitimate claims remain unfiled due to nominees' ignorance.
  • Pay premiums on time. You cannot claim a lapsed policy. Throughout the policy term, set up calendar reminders for due premium. You can otherwise set an auto-debit to guarantee continuity.
  • Submit complete documentation. One of the main reasons for settlement delays is incomplete document packages. Therefore, before filing a claim, thoroughly review the list of required documents.
  • Respond promptly to insurer queries.Responding promptly avoids needless delays in the settlement timeframe if the insurer demands further information during the claim review. So, be ready with your documents and have your schedule cleared for an in-person visit.

How to Intimate a Claim?

Axis Max Life Insurance offers both physical and online routes for claim notification, so nominees can choose the one that best meets their availability. Starting the process early and accurately has a big impact on the settlement timelines.

Online Claim Intimation

  • Visit the official Axis Max Life Insurance website and go to Claim Centre.
  • Click on the “Claims Request” option and then on “Get Started” button to begin
  • Under Claim Information section, select a claim type, and provide all the required details.
  • Upload supporting documents as prompted by the online portal.
  • Submit the form and save the claim reference number for future tracking.

Offline Claim Intimation

  • Visit the nearest Axis Max Life Insurance branch with all relevant documents.
  • Carry the original policy document, nominee's identity proof, and the death certificate for death claims.
  • Fill in the claim intimation form with assistance from a branch representative.
  • Submit all documents and collect the acknowledgement receipt with the claim reference number.

Key documents typically required for a death claim:

  • Original policy document
  • Certified copy of the death certificate
  • Nominee's identity and address proof
  • Medical records, if the claim involves illness or hospitalisation
  • Duly filled and signed claim intimation form

How Long does it Take to Get Claim Payout?

How swiftly your beneficiaries receive the claim benefit is impacted by how quickly they file a claim and fill out the correct forms. Assuming the information is accurate, an insurance company will pay the claim amount in as little as one to two weeks.

The ideal conditions include:

  • The life insurance policy is in effect for three years or more
  • The insurance policy has all premiums paid and
  • The cause of death is not suspicious

Deferrals in filing a claim or getting the right documents together could stretch the payment date. In any case, the life insurance company should pay out a death claim within 120 days.

How to select the insurance company in India with a high claim settlement ratio?

From a policyholder’s perspective, insurers with high claim settlement ratio i.e. higher individual death claims paid ratio are preferable. This is because the higher number indicates that the possibility of claims being approved is higher, if the nominee/policy beneficiary needs to submit a claim after death of the policyholder. To select an insurance company in India with a high claim settlement ratio, here are some factors you must consider:

  • Use IRDAI Annual Report Data:As per IRDAI mandate, all insurers are required to publish quarterly and annual records of claims received, claims settled and claims rejected on the insurer’s website. This information provided by all insurers in India is collated and published in the IRDAI Annual Report. This is freely available to the general public and can be used as an authentic source to check the claim settlement ratio of different insurers.
  • Examine the claim volume:Find out how many claims in total the insurance company has resolved in a financial year. A company that handles a higher number of claims and maintains a high claim settlement ratio is preferable than an insurer that processes a lower number of claims.
  • Check the claim settlement time:Find out how many claims in total the insurance company has resolved in a financial year. A company that handles a higher number of claims and maintains a high claim settlement ratio is preferable than an insurer that processes a lower number of claims.
  • Read customer reviews: Examine other consumers' reviews of their experience with the insurer, especially in relation to claim settlement. Positive reviews indicate that the insurer is better placed to provide a hassle-free claim settlement experience.
  • Customer Support:Look for a company with easily accessible customer service through various means. This way you can reach out to them for any queries that may arise in the future.

Why Life Insurance Claims Get Rejected?

While most life insurance claims are accepted, some are also rejected due to one of the following reasons:

1. Non-Disclosure of Material Facts

The insurer has the right to deny a claim if important information, including an undisclosed pre-existing condition, smoking habits, or a dangerous job. The most crucial thing you can do at the proposal stage is to be completely honest.

2. Policy Lapse Due to Non-Payment

Claim settlement is not available for a policy that has lapsed due to unpaid premiums. Although the majority of insurers provide a grace period, usually 30 days for monthly policies and 15 days for annual ones, claims made within this time are often denied.

3. Death Due to Exclusions

Term plans have various specific exclusions that may differ for different insurers or extent of policy cover. Depending on the terms and conditions of the policy, deaths a result of suicide during the first year of coverage, deaths caused by alcohol or drug use, or deaths connected to involvement in an unlawful activity are not be covered.

4. Delay in Claim Filing

Prolonged waits to notify the insurer of a claim after the insured's passing may cause concerns for the insurer and lead to further investigation or denial. Filing within 90 days of the incident is advised by most insurance.

5. Incorrect or Incomplete Documentation

Claims along with insufficient paperwork, information mismatch, or caused due to an undisclosed health condition are often rejected. Therefore, before filing a claim, nominees must submit supporting documents for faster claim processing. Insurers generally provide a complete checklist to follow when filing a claim.

6. Fraudulent Claims

If the insurer finds proof of fraudulent medical records or a manufactured cause of death, the claim will be denied and the matter may be submitted for legal action.

Types of Insurance Claims in 2026

Every claim type has a unique trigger, documentation needs, and settlement procedure. Being aware of these differences up front can help your nominee avoid wasting time when it counts most. The following are different claim types associated with a life insurance plan:

Death Claim

With a term insurance policy, the nominee submits a death claim to obtain the sum assured in case the life assured dies during the policy term. After reviewing the documentation, the insurer settles the claim as per the terms and conditions of the policy.

Maturity Claim

Maturity claims are relevant to policies that provide a survival bonus or premium reimbursement at the end of the insurance period. TROP (Term Insurance with Return of Premium plans) reimburse the entire premiums paid if the insured outlives the policy term. Pure term plans do not offer maturity benefits.

Rider Claim

When the particular trigger event takes place, you may collect rider-specific benefits, such as a waiver of premium, accidental death benefit, or critical sickness rider, as per your policy. Rider claims can be handled separately or in conjunction with the primary policy claim.

Survival Benefit Claim

The insurer pays out a portion of the sum assured at predetermined intervals throughout the policy term, even if the insured is still alive, under certain plan variants. As opposed to typical term insurance, this is applicable to certain money-back or endowment-style plans.

What is the Term Insurance Claim Settlement Ratio by Number?

The percentage-based CSR provides a compelling figure, but the numerical claim settlement ratio provides crucial background information. Instead of only displaying the percentage, this measure displays the total number of claims an insurer resolved out of the received ones in a financial year.

An insurer settles 99.5% of 50,000 claims and the other settles 99.5% out of 500 claims. There is a significant difference between the numbers of cases accepted and rejected. The latter seems to have a much more reliable and lucrative claim assessment process.

Check the CSR and the total number of claims processed while assessing different term insurance plans. However, the most accurate measure of an insurer's consistency and operational size is a high claim settlement ratio supported by a significant number of settled claims.

Axis Max Life Insurance Claim Settlement Ratio - 6-Year Track Record (2019-2025)

Claim settlement ratio or individual death claim ratio of a life insurance company is first published as part of the company’s annual audited financials. Subsequently, IRDAI collects the individual claim settlement ratio data of life insurers operating in India to create a comprehensive list that is published as part the IRDAI Annual Report. Both of these data sources are freely available to the public through the respective websites.

Below table illustrates the claim settlement ratio of Axis Max Life Insurance over the past 6 years as reported in the IRDAI Annual Report of the applicable financial years:

Claim Settlement Ratio vs Claim Amount Settlement Ratio - What's the Difference?

The claim settlement ratio (CSR) and claim amount settlement ratio (CASR) are two important metrics that help evaluate an insurer's claim-paying performance. While they may sound similar, they measure different aspects of claim settlements.

The claim settlement ratio refers to the percentage of claims settled by an insurer out of the total number of claims received during a financial year. It indicates how frequently an insurer approves claims and is often used to compare the life insurance claim settlement ratio of different companies. On the other hand, the claim amount settlement ratio measures the percentage of the total claim amount paid by the insurer against the total claim amount claimed. This metric provides insight into how effectively the insurer settles claims in terms of monetary value.

The distinction between the claim settlement ratio and the claim amount settlement ratio becomes especially important when purchasing a policy with a high sum assured. An insurer may report a high term insurance claim settlement ratio by settling a large number of low-value claims. However, if high-value claims are rejected or only partially settled, the claim amount settlement ratio will be lower.

For example, suppose an insurer settles 100 claims worth ₹10 crore out of 120 claims worth ₹15 crore received during a year.

Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR) = (100 ÷ 120) × 100 = 83.3%

Claim Amount Settlement Ratio (CASR) = (₹10 crore ÷ ₹15 crore) × 100 = 66.7%

This example shows that while the insurer settled most claims by number, a significant portion of the total claim amount remained unpaid. Therefore, when comparing insurers, especially those claiming the highest claim settlement ratio in life insurance, it is advisable to review both CSR and CASR. Together, these metrics provide a more complete picture of an insurer's claim settlement performance.

Axis Max Life Insurance ICRA Ratings

Beyond the claim settlement ratio, independent credit ratings add another layer of assurance about an insurer's financial strength. ICRA, one of India's most respected credit rating agencies, has reaffirmed Axis Max Life Insurance's rating, reflecting the company's financial stability and long-term ability to meet policyholder commitments.

IRDAI Guidelines on Claim Settlement for Term Insurance

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has laid down specific timelines to ensure prompt settlement of life insurance claims. According to the current IRDAI Master Circular, a death claim that does not require investigation must be settled within 15 days from the date the insurer receives the claim intimation and all necessary documents. If the insurer believes an investigation is required, the investigation must be completed promptly and the claim must be settled within 45 days from the date of claim intimation.

These guidelines help protect policyholders and beneficiaries by ensuring timely claim processing. While comparing insurers based on their term insurance claim settlement ratio or life insurance claim settlement ratio, it is equally important to understand the timelines within which claims must be settled.

If an insurer fails to settle a claim within the prescribed period, the claimant is entitled to receive interest at a rate equal to the prevailing bank rate plus 2%, calculated from the date of claim intimation until the date of payment. The insurer is required to pay this interest automatically along with the claim amount. Therefore, while choosing an insurer with a strong claim settlement ratio or even the highest claim settlement ratio in life insurance, policyholders should also consider the insurer's track record for timely claim settlement and customer service.

Stay Safe, Stay Protected

As a policyholder or buyer, you can take a cue from the claim settlement ratio. However, the IRDAI advises that the claim settlement ratio should not be the only parameter that you consider when buying a life insurance policy. Instead, you need to ask whichever insurance company you have decided to purchase life insurance from, to provide all the material information about their policy undertaking and claim settlement process.

On the other hand, you must make sure that you are sincere and transparent while filling out the application form so that your family does not have any problems submitting a claim to the insurer in your absence.

Conclusion

The claim settlement ratio is the most direct measure of whether an insurer will honour its commitment to your family when it counts most. Axis Max Life Insurance's CSR of 99.8%^, backed by strong ICRA ratings and a large volume of successfully settled claims, reflects a track record that policyholders can trust.

What makes the claim settlement ratio important?

Life insurance holds immense value for a family that only has one earning member. Consider a scenario wherein the breadwinner loses their life due to deteriorating health or an accident. While the family has to deal with the emotional trauma of losing a loved one, they will also have to suffer financial stress, as they cannot rely on anyone else for support.

To make sure that your family doesn’t have to go through a similar chain of events, you need to create a contingency plan, with life insurance at its foundation, and various other investments making up the remaining portfolio.

Having a comprehensive life insurance plan, you can not only provide the right financial support to your loved ones in case of emergencies but also earn long-term tax-saving benefits among others for yourself. Before you purchase an insurance plan; however, you need to compare different life insurance plans from other insurers, on the basis of their Claim Settlement Ratio or claims paid ratio. This way you will be able to select an insurance cover that suits your present liabilities and life goals perfectly.

Which term insurance company has the highest claim settlement ratio in India?

Axis Max Life has the highest claim settlement ratio of 99.8%^. If you are comparing insurers, make sure you compare the same metric, namely the individual death claim settlement ratio, and use the latest disclosed year.

What does a 99% claim settlement ratio mean in term insurance?

A 99% claim settlement ratio means that the insurer settled about 99 out of every 100 individual death claims received in that financial year. It does not mean that your own claim is guaranteed to be paid. A claim still depends on the policy terms, disclosures made at the time of purchase, documents submitted, and whether the claim is valid under the policy.

How to choose the best term insurance company in India?

To choose a term insurance company, start with a consistently strong individual death claim settlement ratio, then check the solvency ratio, claim settlement timelines, product features, rider availability, premium affordability, and service quality.
In India, insurers are required to maintain a minimum solvency ratio of 1.5 (or 150%). Also, remember that the best insurer is not simply the one with the highest CSR, but the one whose cover amount, policy terms, and claims support suit your needs.

What is IRDAI's deadline for settling a life insurance death claim?

IRDAI has set a 15-day timeline from claim intimation for life insurance death claims that do not require investigation, and a 45-day timeline from claim intimation for death claims that require investigation.

Does the claim settlement ratio apply only to death claims?

For term insurance, the claim settlement ratio generally refers to death claims, since pure term plans pay a benefit only if the insured dies during the policy term.

However, life insurance claims are not limited to death claims. Depending on the type of policy, insurers may also process claims related to surrender benefits, partial withdrawals, maturity benefits, survival benefits, annuity payouts, and other policy benefits. Therefore, it is important to verify what types of claims are included when interpreting a particular claim settlement ratio.
