What is Equated Monthly Installment (EMI)?

The term ‘EMI’ stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the fixed monthly payment structure that you, the borrower, must pay. Principal and interest are the two key components of the EMI. The ‘principal’ is the initial loan amount you receive from the lender, while the interest is the cost incurred by you for using the funds.

Overall, an EMI is an important element of your financial management. It is a widely preferred mode of repayment. This is because it helps break down payments into manageable instalments and reduces the impact of a one-time financial burden.

What is an EMI Calculator?

An EMI calculator is a free online financial tool that can help you estimate the monthly EMI amount that you need to pay in order to pay off a loan. An EMI calculator can be used to calculate the EMI amount on any type of secured or unsecured of loan, such as a car loan, home loan, education loan or personal loan.

To calculate the EMI amount using the EMI calculator, you need to provide 3 key bits of information - the loan amount, repayment tenure and the loan interest rate. After submitting the details, the EMI calculator displays the EMI amount payable each month to pay off the loan in full within the specified repayment tenure. In order to better understand the inner workings of the EMI calculator, let’s take a closer look at the EMI calculator formula.

What is the EMI Calculation Formula?

The EMI formula helps you calculate fixed monthly loan repayments to assess affordability and repayment capacity. The amount of an EMI depends on the principal amount, interest rate, and tenure.

Here’s how to calculate EMI:

Equated Monthly Instalments (EMI) = $P times R times frac{(1+R)^N}{(1+R)^N - 1}$
Where,

  • P = Principal Amount: The principal amount refers to the loan amount that you’re borrowing from a lender. The principal amount is directly proportional to the EMI amount. It means the lower the principal amount, the lower the EMI.
  • R = Rate of Interest: The interest rate is the rate charged by a lending institution for a loan. It may vary across lenders. It is directly proportional to the EMI amount. This means the higher the interest rate, the higher the EMI amount.
  • N = Loan Tenure: Loan tenure is the time within which you need to repay the loan amount. The loan tenure is inversely proportional to the EMI amount. This means the longer the tenure, the lower the EMI amount.

EMI Calculation Examples

EMI calculations differ across loan types. Let’s understand how the EMI calculation works through the following examples:

1. Home Loan

Suppose Mr Kumar has a home loan of ₹50 lakhs at an interest rate of 8.5% and for a tenure of 20 years. Here’s how to calculate his monthly EMI:

  • Home Loan Amount: ₹50 lakhs
  • Rate of Interest: 8.5%
  • Loan Tenure: 20 Years

EMI = P x R x (1+R)^N/((1+R)^N – 1
EMI = ₹50,00,000 x 8.5 x (1+8.5)^20/((1+8.5)^20 – 1
EMI = ₹43,390

Therefore, the monthly EMI for Mr Kumar’s home loan will be ₹43,390.

2. Car Loan

Suppose Ms Sakshi has a car loan of ₹8 lakhs at a 9% interest rate for a 5-year tenure. Let’s calculate her monthly EMI:

  • Car Loan Amount: ₹8 lakhs
  • Rate of Interest: 9%
  • Loan Tenure: 5 Years

EMI = P x R x (1+R)^N/((1+R)^N – 1
EMI = ₹8,00,000 x 9 x (1+9)^5/((1+9)^5 – 1
EMI = ₹16,610

Therefore, the monthly EMI for Ms Sakshi’s car loan will be ₹16,610.

3. Personal Loan

For example, Neha has taken a personal loan of ₹5 lakh for her family obligations at an interest rate of 12% for a tenure of 3 years.

  • Personal Loan Amount: ₹5 lakhs
  • Rate of Interest: 12%
  • Loan Tenure: 3 Years

EMI = P x R x (1+R)^N/((1+R)^N – 1
EMI = ₹5,00,000 x 12 x (1+12)^3/((1+12)^3 – 1
EMI = ₹16,610

Therefore, the monthly EMI for Neha’s personal loan will be ₹16,610.

How to Use the Online EMI Calculator?

An EMI calculator online provides all the EMI details that can help you budget loans and make a planned decision. Follow the given step-by-step procedure to use an online EMI calculator:

Step 1: Select Loan Type

Open a financial website and look for the EMI calculator tool. Select the type of loan that you intend to borrow. Enter the loan amount in the EMI calculator. It is the total amount that you want to borrow.

Step 2: Enter Interest Rate

Input the annual interest rate at which you are borrowing a loan. Make sure to provide the correct interest rate to get accurate results.

Step 3: Select Tenure and Calculate

Select the loan duration over which you have to repay the loan. After entering all the details, click on the calculate button.

Step 4: View Results

The system will analyse your input and deliver accurate results for the monthly EMI that you need to pay. It will also show you the amortisation table along with the principal and interest paid and the remaining balance on a monthly basis.

Amortization Schedule Explained

The amortisation schedule is a detailed payment plan for the entire loan term. It specifies how the monthly EMI payment is allocated between the principal and the interest. The principal component of the amortisation schedule shows the portion of EMI allocated to reduce the loan principal.

On the other hand, the interest component goes towards the interest payment on the remaining loan balance. The following is a monthly EMI (April to December) illustration for a ₹30 lakh home loan with a tenure of 3 years and an interest rate of 14%:

Month Beginning Balance EMI Principal Interest Ending Balance
Apr ₹30,00,000 ₹1,02,533 ₹67,533 ₹35,000 ₹29,32,467

The above data shows monthly EMI instalments for 2026, with the amounts decreasing over the year.

What are the Benefits of Using an EMI Calculator?

An online EMI calculator is an important financial tool that helps you estimate the monthly EMIs for a given loan amount, interest rate, and tenure. The following are some of the benefits of using an EMI calculator:

  • Instant Results: An EMI calculator provides quick, accurate results in seconds. You only need to enter the loan amount, interest rate, and tenure to view the monthly EMI.
  • Comparing Loan Options: You can easily compare loan options by changing the inputs such as interest rate and tenure to choose a suitable option for yourself.
  • Plan Budget: Estimating the EMI in advance helps you plan the monthly budget more effectively to avoid financial stress.
  • Amortisation Visibility: Most EMI calculators provide a detailed amortisation schedule showing the EMI allocation between principal and interest. It helps you understand the overall repayment structure.
  • Free to Use: Online EMI calculators are free to use, and you can access them multiple times without any restrictions.
  • Helps to Negotiate: You can better negotiate with lenders when you have a clear understanding of the EMI and interest. It helps you discuss loan terms more confidently to secure practical interest rates.
  • Prepayment Planning: An EMI calculator helps you see how prepayments affect your loan amount and repayment period. You can change the inputs to understand the impact and plan your prepayments better.
  • No Manual Errors: Calculating EMI manually is difficult and susceptible to human errors. Hence, an online EMI calculator removes the chances of such errors. They provide accurate results.
  • Accessible on Mobile: Most EMI calculators are accessible on mobile phones, making them easy to use anytime, anywhere.

Different Types of EMI Calculators

Different types of loans use specific EMI calculators to provide accurate results based on the loan specifications. Here are the major types of EMI calculators based on the loan type:

1. Car Loan EMI Calculator

For a car loan, you should pay the EMI by a specific due date each month. Thus, make sure to calculate the exact EMI amount to ensure it is within your payment limit. The monthly EMI instalments are calculated based on the loan amount, rather than the full on-road price. It means that the car’s ex-showroom price is considered for eligibility, while the on-road price is used for loan budgeting. You can calculate the car loan's monthly EMI by entering the loan amount, interest rate, and loan tenure in the EMI calculator online. The typical car loan ranges from ₹3 lakhs to ₹20 lakhs over a term of 1 to 7 years. Loan providers usually charge interest between 7.5% and 12% on car loans.

2. Personal Loan EMI Calculator

Personal loans are used for several purposes, such as weddings, home renovations, and vacations. As personal loans are unsecured, they typically carry higher interest rates (10% to 18%) and shorter tenures of 1 to 5 years. That is why many borrowers take a personal loan between ₹50,000 and ₹40 lakh. If you’re looking to take a personal loan, use an online personal loan EMI calculator to estimate the monthly EMI.

3. Education Loan EMI Calculator

To tackle education expenses, you may consider an education loan as the best option. You can choose the most suitable education loan by estimating the monthly EMI using an education loan EMI calculator. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has mandated a moratorium period for education loans. It is a period in which the student is not obliged to make interest and principal repayments. Section 80E of the Income Tax Act allows you to deduct the entire interest paid on education loans for higher studies from your taxable income, with no maximum limit. However, it is applicable only under the old tax regime.

Factors That Can Affect The EMI You Need to Pay

You should understand the factors that affect the EMI amount when taking out a loan and planning your repayments. The following are the factors that affect the EMI payment:

1. Loan Amount

The loan amount is the sum of money you borrow from the lender. The higher loan amount leads to higher EMIs and vice versa. Hence, you need to balance the loan amount and repayment capacity to reduce financial stress.

2. Interest Rate

The interest rate has a major impact on the EMI amount. A lower interest rate leads to a lower EMI, while a higher rate leads to a higher EMI. Therefore, you should maintain a good credit score and compare different lenders to get a lower interest rate.

3. Tenure

Tenure is the loan term, which plays a key role in deciding the EMI. A longer tenure leads to lower EMI amounts but higher interest payments. On the other hand, a shorter tenure means higher EMI amounts but lower overall interest payments.

4. Type of Interest

The type of interest rate, fixed or floating, plays a primary role in calculating the EMI. A fixed interest rate keeps the EMI constant throughout the loan tenure. However, a floating rate changes with market fluctuations.

5. Credit Score Impact

Your credit score directly affects the interest rate offered by the lender. A high credit score will help you get a loan at a low interest rate, thereby reducing the EMI. On the other hand, a low credit score may lead to a high interest rate, increasing the overall EMI.

6. Processing Fees

The lender’s processing fees for loan approval and management can indirectly affect the EMI. If it is added to the total loan amount, it leads to a slight increase in the repayment amount.

7. Down Payment

The amount you pay upfront affects your EMI. A higher down payment reduces the loan amount, leading to reduced EMI. Conversely, a smaller down payment increases the amount borrowed, leading to a higher monthly EMI.

Flat Rate vs Reducing Balance Rate

A flat interest rate means that the lending rate stays constant throughout the loan tenure. On the contrary, the reducing-balance rate is decided by the principal amount owed at the end of the loan period. The following are the key differences between the flat rate and reducing balance rate:

Parameters Flat Rate Reducing Balance Rate
Form of Calculation The interest is calculated on the total sanctioned principal amount. The interest rate is based on the outstanding loan amount under the reducing rate.
Comparison Rate Interest is calculated as a fixed percentage. The interest can increase or decrease during the loan tenure.
Interest Rate Equivalence Leads to higher interest rate equivalence. Reflect the effective interest rate initially.
Interest Rate Calculations Simple calculation Complex calculation
Calculation Formula Monthly EMI = [P + (P x I x T)/100] / Tx 12
Where,
  • P = Principal
  • I = Annual Interest Rate
  • T = Tenure in Years
Monthly EMI = [P x I x (1+I) ^T]/ [((1+I) ^T)-1)]
Where,
  • P = Principal
  • I = Interest Rate / (100x12)
  • T = Number of Years x 12

Illustration

To understand the difference, let's calculate the EMI under the flat-rate and reducing-balance methods for the same loan amount, interest rate, and tenure. Suppose the loan details are as follows:

  • Loan Amount: ₹5 lakhs
  • Rate of Interest: 9%
  • Loan Tenure: 10 years

For the above loan, the monthly EMIs under both rates are as follows:

1. Flat-rate Calculation

Monthly EMI = [P + (P x I x T)/100] / T x 12
Monthly EMI = [5,00,000 + (5,00,000 x 9 x 10)/100] / 10 x 12
Monthly EMI = ₹7,917

2. Reducing Balance Rate Calculation

Monthly EMI = [P x I x (1+I) ^T]/ [((1+I) ^T)-1)]
Monthly EMI = [5,00,000 x (9/100x12) x (1+(9/100x12))^(10x12)] / [((1+(9/100x12))^(10x12))-1]
Monthly EMI = ₹6,334

How Prepayment Affects EMI?

Prepayment of a loan means paying more than your regular EMI. This can be done by paying a lump sum, making small extra payments from time to time. However, foreclosure means closing the loan early by paying the full outstanding amount.

For Example:

You took a loan of ₹50 lakh, and you have already settled a significant part of your loan. Now, the outstanding balance is ₹10 lakh. So, a partial payment means paying ₹2 lakh toward the total loan amount of ₹50 lakh, while foreclosure means paying the entire outstanding amount of ₹10 lakh.

Prepayment impacts the loan tenure and interest. It can either reduce the loan tenure with the same EMI, helping you save on interest, or reduce the EMI amount with the same tenure, leading to smaller monthly EMIs.

The Reserve Bank of India (Pre-Payment Charges on Loans) Directions, 2025, have been effective since January 1, 2026, and prescribe prepayment limits. Under the directions, the RBI prohibits prepayment charges on floating-rate loans for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). This rule applies to all commercial banks, cooperative banks, and Non-Banking Financial Institutions (NBFCs), ensuring no penalties for early loan closures.

Tips to Reduce Your Loan EMI

Reducing the loan EMI also lowers your financial stress of paying a high EMI every month. The following are a few simple tips on how to reduce loan EMI:

  • Higher Down Payment: If you’re paying a larger upfront amount, it reduces the total loan amount. It directly lowers EMI because interest is calculated on a smaller principal amount.
  • Longer Tenure: When you choose a longer period for repayment, it reduces the monthly EMI. However, it may increase the total interest that is paid on the loan.
  • Balance Transfer to a Lower-Rate Bank: You can transfer your existing loan to another bank if that bank offers a lower interest rate. In this case, make sure your savings from a lower interest rate outweigh the transfer charges.
  • Improve Credit Score: A better credit score makes you a lower-risk borrower to lenders. This allows them to offer loans at lower interest rates, thereby reducing the total monthly EMI.
  • Negotiate with the Bank: Interest rates are often negotiable. You may negotiate the rate with your bank if you have a good repayment history and a strong financial profile.
  • Prepay when Possible: If you make partial prepayments, it helps reduce the outstanding principal. This lowers the burden of interest payment by either reducing the EMI or cutting the loan tenure.
  • Opt for a Floating Rate when Rates are Falling: You can choose a floating interest rate when market interest rates are expected to decline. This may help in reducing your EMI over time. As the interest rates fall, the EMI may decrease, and that makes repayment easier.
  • Choose Step-Up EMI Plan: A step-up EMI plan starts with lower EMIs in the initial years and gradually increases over time. It can help you manage your payments comfortably in the beginning.

Conclusion

As you can see, the EMI calculator is an essential financial tool that you must use in order to plan for any type of loan you might be planning to take. So, go ahead and compute your EMI amount before applying for a loan to be adequately prepared. This way you would be able to manage your finances better and minimise the potential burden of servicing an outstanding loan.

What is an EMI?

EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) is the fixed amount you pay every month to repay a loan. It includes both the loan amount (principal) and interest. At first, you pay more interest and less principal, but over time, the principal part increases. The EMI amount stays the same throughout the loan tenure.

How is EMI calculated?

EMI calculation relies on factors like, the principal amount, interest rate, and loan tenure. Here is a formula to calculate the EMI:

Equated Monthly Instalments (EMI) = P x R x (1+r)^n/((1+r)^N – 1
Where,
  • P = Principal Amount
  • R = Interest Rate
  • N = Loan Tenure

For example, a ₹10 lakh loan at 10% interest for 5 years will lead to a monthly EMI of ₹21,247. You can use an online EMI calculator to get instant results for financial planning.

What factors affect my loan EMI?

Several factors affect loan EMIs, directly or indirectly, including the loan amount, interest rate, loan tenure, etc. For example, a lower loan amount, interest rate, and processing fees lead to reduced EMI.

What is the difference between a flat rate and a reducing balance rate?

A flat interest rate means that the lending rate stays constant throughout the loan tenure. However, the reducing-balance rate is decided by the principal amount owed at the end of the loan tenure. The interest under the flat rate is calculated based on the total sanctioned principal amount. In contrast, the interest rate under the reducing rate is based on the outstanding loan amount.

How does loan tenure affect my EMI?

Loan tenure strongly affects your monthly EMI. It is inversely proportional to the EMI amount, meaning that longer loan tenures have lower monthly EMIs and shorter loan tenures have higher monthly EMIs. For example, a ₹30 lakh home loan at 8.5% interest for 15 years will have a monthly EMI of ₹29,542, whereas the same loan for 25 years will have an EMI of ₹24,157. It is ideal to choose the loan tenure based on your monthly budget to reduce the total interest.

Can I reduce my EMI after taking a loan?

Yes, it is possible to reduce the EMI after taking a loan through various methods. It includes foreclosure, part-prepayments, restructuring, or transferring the loan to a lower interest rate. Of all the methods to reduce EMI, prepayment is the most effective one.

What is an amortisation schedule?

The amortisation schedule is a detailed payment plan for the entire loan tenure. It shows how the monthly EMI payment is allocated between the borrowed principal and the interest payment. More EMI is allocated to interest payments in the early years, while principal repayment increases in later years.

What happens if I miss an EMI payment?

Paying your EMIs on time helps you get better loan terms in the future. It helps you boost your credit score. In contrast, missing an EMI negatively affects your credit score, affects your creditworthiness, leads to penalties, or even results in loss of assets.

What is the EMI for a ₹50 lakh home loan?

The EMI for a ₹50 lakh home loan depends on the interest rate and loan tenure. You can use an online home loan EMI calculator to estimate the monthly EMI for a ₹50 lakh loan.

What is the difference between fixed and floating interest rates in EMI?

The type of interest rate, fixed or floating, plays a major role in deciding the EMI. A fixed interest rate keeps the EMI constant throughout the loan tenure, while a floating rate changes with market fluctuations. Thus, the fixed interest rate is more stable than the floating interest rate.

How does a credit score affect my EMI?

A higher credit score, typically above 750, directly reduces the monthly EMI by helping you secure a loan at a lower interest rate. This is because lenders consider a higher credit score a lower risk. On the other hand, a lower credit score attracts higher interest rates, thereby increasing the EMI.
