Free Lithophane Maker — Turn Any Photo into a Backlit 3D Print

A browser-based lithophane maker built for photo to lithophane work. Drop in an image, set the thinnest and thickest points in millimetres, preview the backlit relief in 3D, and export a lithophane STL your 3D printer can read.

How to Make a Lithophane from a Photo

Three steps, all of them in your browser.

Upload your photo

Why Choose Meshy Lithophane Maker?

A purpose-built lithophane generator that runs entirely in the browser and exports a real, print-ready STL.

Nothing leaves your browser

Your photo is never uploaded. The height field, the mesh and the STL are all built on your own machine, so a client portrait or a private memory stays on your desk.

Tuned for lithophanes

Minimum and maximum thickness in millimetres, not an abstract relief depth, so the thin-to-thick range that makes a photo glow is exactly what you dial in.

Backlit preview

Toggle the simulated backlight to see the print the way you will actually view it — thin areas glowing, thick areas dark — before you slice it.

Free, watertight STL

Download a manifold, watertight STL scaled to the exact size and thicknesses you set. No account, no credits, no watermark cut into the model.

Lithophane vs Relief vs Full 3D Model

A lithophane carries the picture in its thickness and is read by backlight — that one fact decides whether your file works downstream.

Full 3D model
What it is
A thin plate whose whole thickness carries the image, read by backlight.
A flat plate with the subject raised out of a solid base.
A closed mesh with real geometry on every side, including the ones the photo never showed.
How it shows the image
Lit from behind: thin areas glow bright, thick areas stay dark
Lit from the front: raised areas catch light and shadow
Materials and lighting, like any 3D model
Opens in a slicer?
Yes — print it upright on its edge at 100% infill
Yes, in solid mode
Yes, and it prints from any angle
Use it for
Backlit photo prints, night lights, lampshades
Plaques, CNC carving, laser engraving, casting molds
Figurines, busts, lamps and anything printed in the round

Want a Full 3D Model Instead? A lithophane is a flat height surface, which is exactly why it lights up from behind. If you want the subject in the round — a figurine, a bust or a lamp body shaped around the photo — Meshy builds a closed 3D model from the same image.

Lithophane Ideas and Uses

Where a backlit photo print works best, and where our customers already print them.

Photo gifts

Turn a portrait, a wedding photo or a pet into a keepsake that lights up on a windowsill or a desk.

Night lights

A small lithophane backlit by an LED puck becomes a night light that shows the photo it hides by day.

Decor and lampshades

A flat panel is the start — curve the same image into a cylindrical lampshade or a framed lamp body.

Memorials and keepsakes

A backlit portrait makes a quiet memorial print or a personalised ornament for a shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

A lithophane is a thin 3D-printed photo that only shows its image when you hold it up to a light. Thin areas let light through and read bright, thick areas block it and read dark, so the picture appears as you tilt the print toward a lamp or a window.

Upload a photo, set the thinnest and thickest points in millimetres, then export the STL. Slice it at 100% infill with 0.08–0.12 mm layers for the smoothest gradient, print it standing on its short edge with a brim, and hold it up to a light to see the image.

0.8 mm at the thinnest point and 3–4 mm at the thickest is a good starting range for a 100 mm print. Thin areas transmit more light and read brighter; below about 0.6 mm you risk pinholes, and above 4 mm the dark end blocks so much light that contrast drops.

Portraits, pets and photos with one clear subject and good contrast convert best. Brightness becomes thickness, so avoid busy backgrounds and flat, low-contrast shots — a muddy photo turns into a muddy print.

Print the positive for the familiar photo: bright areas come out thin and glow. Switch to the negative when the print will be lit from the side you look at, or when the model mounts back-to-front in a lamp frame.

Stand the print a couple of centimetres in front of any warm light — a small LED puck, a picture light, or a windowsill. For a curved lampshade, a heart, or a lamp body built around the same photo, describe it to Meshy 3D Agent, which generates the full model from your image.

A single watertight STL, scaled so the size and the minimum and maximum thickness you set are the real millimetres in the file. Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, Cura and PrusaSlicer all import it as-is. Our guide to 3D print file types covers when to reach for another format.

Yes. Generating, previewing and downloading lithophane STLs is free with no account and no credits, and your photo never leaves your browser. You are responsible for holding the rights to the image you upload.
