Critic Reviews for Rectify Season 4
All Critics (20) | Top Critics (12) | Fresh (20) | Rotten (0)
We may never see another show like Rectify. It was a program as unafraid of silence as it was of melodrama. And it's another series on this list that entirely transcended its set-up.
Ray McKinnon's melancholic masterpiece finds hope in new places (and fresh faces) as the downtempo series rapidly approaches the end.
What happens to Daniel and to Teddy Jr. and Tawney, unfolds with a slowness that is highly unusual, even in the best of TV drama. Scenes are extended for their quietness, not their melodrama.
The series is a vital piece of art, because it presents a world TV often forgets, and it does so with beauty, bittersweetness, and humility.
No other series so poignantly probes the human condition and our concept of reality, identity, what we know and what is true with such alluring complexity.
Rectify regularly draws audiences in the low six figures. All the more reason to be grateful that it will have a full if brief run to tell its small congregation that where there is life, there is the chance to be reborn.
Its exploration of moral and spiritual landscapes suggests new and unexpected directions for television.
No TV show captivates me in the same way Rectify does, and no other show makes me consider the world so differently.
They're still [doing] good work here.
Creator Ray McKinnon's genuine compassion for Daniel and those in his orbit, including his family back home in Paulie, GA... makes Rectify one of TV's truest, finest and deepest dives into pure character drama.
In an ironically satisfying ending, 'Rectify' suggests that closure is a mirage, always on the horizon but never at your feet.
In its final season, with but eight episodes total, Rectify continues to take risks.

Mar 07, 2021Possibly the best television show I've ever watched.

Jul 21, 2020Perfect final season to a perfect tv series.

Dec 25, 2019Excellent acting and writing and a good amount of depth and realism; the slow pace was not a problem for me for the first two seasons, but the show began to drag in the the third season, and the final season was excessively slow. A balance needed to be achieved between drama, emotion, and pacing that was not achieved. So much potential that fizzled out because of poor pacing. It was also frustrating to invest that much time and not have a resolution to the murder mystery component. Overall, though, unique among dramas for its depth and subtlety.

Dec 21, 2018What a way to end one of the best dramas of all time.

Feb 17, 2018Just finished the series, one of the best written and beautifully acted shows I've seen. When an innocent man spends 20 years on death row and is released, how does he move on? How does his family who've been in a prison of their own move on? A masterpiece about family, sadness, forgiveness, love and not knowing all the answers and am sad it's over #FarewellRectify

May 30, 2017Probably the only series on the TV one could watch which so authentically shows the immense complexity of the human beingness, soul and the emotions around it. Just brilliant. "No other series so poignantly probes the human condition and our concept of reality, identity, what we know and what is true with such alluring complexity."

Feb 22, 2017This show felt way too stagnant and a struggle to watch since its so slow, but the acting and characters are great.

Dec 29, 2016Bookended by two of the most emotionally potent and subtly intricate episodes of the entire series- and that's no small praise -Season 4 of Rectify wraps up one of television's finest and most criminally overlooked shows in slow-burning, poetic fashion
