Critic Reviews for Rectify Season 1
All Critics (32) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (28) | Rotten (4)
It's those supporting characters that make Rectify worth watching.
Like Sundance's other recent dramas, Restless and Top of the Lake, Rectify moves at its own pace -- and offers its own rewards.
Those six episodes are well worth watching. Maybe McKinnon can rectify the plot issue in a second season.
Rectify would be lost in transition without Young's stellar work in the lead role. It's a fearless, fully immersed, Emmy caliber performance tinged with sadness, searching, primitive pleasures and even a little comedy.
the main focus of Rectify stays on the most interesting material - on what it means for a person to find himself with a future, after having written himself off as a dead man walking.
Takes time to get into, but once in, you're in.
Sundance's first original dramatic series feels damply airless-the tension might be ripped open at any moment by a thunderclap of revelation.
Rectify is so unusual a show, with its own deliberate pace and premise and approach, that it may not build enough viewership to keep going. But that doesn't mean it's not a worthwhile show, or a memorable one - because it is.
Each episode of Rectify unfolds like a new chapter in a richly engrossing novel, fleshing out these characters with fascinating precision, and giving every member of the supporting cast a chance to shine.
Its simmering mystery and artfully depicted dysfunction make every scene hum with tension.
Rectify is touching in so many ways, and the only drawback is that six hours is not nearly enough to tell this story, with an open-ended conclusion that's more disturbing than satisfying.
Thankfully, creator and writer Ray McKinnon, Sundance and the producing team behind Breaking Bad, Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein, weren't against letting viewers see Daniel's every new discovery, conflicted emotion and painful memory.

Feb 06, 2021This is one of my favorite shows of all time. The show builds - and with it the complexity of the characters. I'm surprised by the lower critics scores, but I think that's because we are just getting to know Daniel and his family.

Jul 21, 2020One of the best tv series ever made, yet virtually unknown to the GP. A hidden treasure worth of being discovered.
-
Jul 10, 2020I thought the whole series was a marvel: the writing, the ensemble playing, casting, music, etc - always fresh, engaging, interesting, thoughtful.

Jun 15, 2020Quasi interesting premise - but GOOD LORD it's sooooo slow. I felt myself yelling "get on with it already"! Do not recommend

Dec 25, 2019I have no idea why all the critics are raving about this show. It's a hand-wringing, overly melodramatic soap opera, made even more annoying by the insipid pop music on the soundtrack. Why do TV and movie producers use such stupid soundtrack music? Because it's part of the deal. They have record people coming at them from all directions, hawking the latest flavor of the month pop singers. As the wrongly imprisoned and finally released protagonist, Aden Young is sullen and uncommunicative. When he does speak more than a couple of lines, it sounds like bad poetry--groan out loud bad. The "mystery" is whether or not he is actually innocent, regardless of the DNA evidence that led to his release. Needless to say, this theme is nothing new; it's been used in countless movie and TV dramas. The whole thing is unoriginal, self-conscious, and contrived. The Rotten Tomatoes caption for 2 1/2 stars is right on: "Meh, it passed the time."

Sep 15, 2019I am not a DRAMA movie enthusiast. I prefer a slightly faster paste plot line. However, Rectify, sucked my in. I binged for a week to complete it. The acting is outstanding, the plot excellent, but the WRITING really drew me in. Nothing satisfies my brain activity like an extremely well written movie.
