Critic Reviews for Rectify Season 2
All Critics (22) | Top Critics (16) | Fresh (21) | Rotten (1)
Rectify isn't a whodunit, and that frees it up to explore all kinds of big questions about redemption, forgiveness, the double-edged sword that is freedom, the reach of maternal love, the subjectivities of time, and the purpose of religious belief.
We're often accustomed to programs that leap forward through large chunks of time but Rectify is a methodical piece about conversations and moments more than a sprawling narrative.
Few shows are so grounded. And, if you have a little patience, few shows are so worth watching.
The show that returns tonight is better than ever; its slowness and care strike me as even more distinctive and refreshing than they were a year ago.
An extremely ungenerous feeling came over me as I watched the first three episodes of the second. It was that itch of impatience you get when you would like someone to get over something horrible already, but only because you, anyway, are exhausted by it.
The joy of last season's discovery has given way to a hope that Rectify's continued strong performances won't be snuffed out by a steady downbeat of characters' lives further unraveling.
It will be interesting to see what Rectify does with an extended ten-episode season, but if the first three are any indication, it will continue to be a profoundly engrossing character study, brimming with lyrical beauty.
Rectify [is] a show willing to make us wait: for action, for answers, for the revealing of character at the speed of actual life.
The second season has many of its greatest scenes in Daniel's mind as he explores who he's becoming.
It's hard not to be moved by Rectify's unique approach to a redemption story, with an aching tenderness cloaked in a suffocating sadness.
It's complex, understated, and enchanting. In other words, it's everything you would expect Rectify to be.
Although [Daniel and Kerwin's] backgrounds are as opposite as the colors of their skin, their love for one another is refreshing and undeniable.

Aug 15, 2015A better sophomore year for Rectify, that makes good use of augmenting the first seasons strengths. Like the first year, Rectify is a slow burn, and intermittingly boring and melodramatic, but it fires on all cylinders when it comes to pay off. Calculated and well-perfomed, Rectify remains an impressive drama, even if its scenery chewing and lack of levity won't be for everyone.

Jun 17, 2015If you want your television as action-packed as a summer movie, Rectify isn't your show. The pacing of this Georgia-based show is slow as a Southern drawl. Indeed, it often advances at a glacial pace. But if you are drawn into shows that focus on characters and addressing big questions, Rectify is a god send. The center of the show is Daniel Holden (Aden Young) who was released from prison after 19 years because DNA tests showed he didn't rape his 16-year-old girlfriend although he hasn't been exonerated from murder charges. Daniel is clearly damaged from his nearly two decades in prison (and numerous flashbacks show you why), and he struggles to live in a world that has moved without him. Much of the show revolves around his relations with his family, who largely remain fiercely loyal, particularly sister Amantha (Abigail Spencer and mother Janet (J. Smith-Cameron). It also centers on the relationship between Daniel's asshole good old boy half brother Ted Jr.(Clayne Crawford) and his wife, Tawney (Adelaide Clemens) a deeply religious woman who lives out the life she beliefs Jesus would want her to and tries to bring out the goodness in Daniel. Because the action is slow (it is taken two seasons to decide whether or not to prosecute Daniel for murder), the show can deal with big issues and themes like redemption, forgiveness, freedom, the nature of of time, and the purpose of religious belief. This is a slow journey, but one worth taking.

May 26, 2015La temporada 2 de "Rectify" confirma totalmente las expectativas que dejó su antecesora, y lo hace de excelente manera, incluso, dejando las expectativas para la siguiente temporada igual de elevadas como la primera temporada lo hizo.

Mar 02, 2015Probably the single most under viewed show on TV right now. Rectify is truly something special and I urge every TV fan to seek it out right now. It's only 16 episodes over 2 seasons with a 3rd coming down the line, but this show is deeply complex, sad and full of haunting ambiguity. Aden Young is giving one of the best performances around. I can't recommend this show enough.
