Critic Reviews for Rectify Season 3
All Critics (20) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (20) | Rotten (0)
Rectify can be both hypnotic and heart-wrenching for viewers who have invested in these characters throughout the first two seasons.
The boldest new injection comes via flashback, a consistently and effectively utilized path into Daniel's headspace.
Thursday's premiere is very good indeed -- picking up days, even hours, after Daniel's plea.
There's enough to the central plot to make for engrossing drama, but Rectify's true power comes from the smaller character moments and its mesmerizing dialogue.
The continuing murder case provides some plot drive, but Rectify's main investigation is spiritual: into forgiveness, grace, the holiness of moments in a finite life.
Anchoring everything is Young's remarkable work in the lead role, playing a man whose impassive demeanor only occasionally hints at his inner turmoil, illustrated in part through the judicious use of flashbacks to his time in prison.
You have to love Daniel's dry humor, whether or not it's always intentional. That's just one of the qualities that makes it easy to forget he has a violent side.
Season 3 keeps Rectify as compelling and challenging as summer TV usually gets.
No series uses quiet to suggest the turbulent depths of unsettled lives with more effectiveness than the subtly affecting and powerful human drama Rectify.
Dang it, Teddy. Just when I want to hit you I want to hug you.
The final scene makes me question what is otherwise the finest season premiere Rectify has done.
The pace is deliberate, and there aren't the kind of laughs that other dramas employ as comic relief. But there's real wit and propulsiveness in the storytelling Ray McKinnon does in this show.

Dec 17, 2015Absolutely beautiful. Amazing acting and solid writing. Wonderful use of subtlety and empty space. A perfect example of a show that allows for a complexity of human emotion, and doesn't spoonfeed us a point of view. Admittedly, I'm a very critical tv watcher, and there's not a whole lot of tv out there that I enjoy these days. For this series, I am truly grateful.
