Back is not up to the level of Peep Show or other more recent short, quirky comedies... But its cozy-caustic style hits just enough to be worth a short binge, if largely to hear Mitchell just create and repeat the phrase "hedge vodka" over and over again.
I laughed. There are some excellent lines. But some jokes are quite laboured, there are stock characters, and plot twists you can see coming a mile off. Like I said, I like it but can't love it.
Like all the best comedies, Back gathers a load of clots and misfits together in a confined space so it can be funny about them -- and sometimes it is very funny, especially if your sense of humour tends, like mine, to the scatological.
It's still a joy to watch, and particularly so now, when we really do need all the quality entertainment we can get.
It's good to have a comedy you know will never let through a lazy gag (Lilt excepted) and always chooses black humour over light. Welcome back, Back.
Maybe in their next project they could try changing their accents or dyeing their hair or doing something to banish Mark and Jez from our minds for half an hour.
It is a testament to the masterful construction of this comedy-thriller that it remains possible to imagine they might. Let the mind games commence.
Writer and creator Simon Blackwell carved a niche on the first series of Back by colouring his sharp, punchline-heavy humour in a darkly psychological shade, and he continues similarly in this new six-part installment.
Occasionally, a joke will actually land. More often the sheer painful effort and all the tacked-on slurry will defuse it before it can start to work.
Webb and Mitchell are the Morecambe and Wise of snarky comedy. Long may they sneer together.
A triumphant return for Back after way too indecently long an absence.
