I'm shocked by how decent it looks in my game wip, I don't want to rely on AI too much for this particular project but I am very impressed by meshy.

Meshy is an AI 3D model generator: describe what you need in text or upload a reference image and get a complete, ready-to-use 3D model in under a minute — with texturing, rigging, and animation tools built in. CGTrader is one of the largest 3D model marketplaces on the web, where you search, preview, and buy ready-made models uploaded by a community of designers; it also offers an AI generator that runs on third-party engines. This page compares the two honestly: where generating wins, where buying wins, and which fits your project.
Start Creating 3D ModelMeshy turns your text prompts or reference images into original, ready-to-use 3D models in minutes — no searching, no per-asset fees, and you can texture, rig, animate, or print the result. CGTrader is one of the largest 3D model marketplaces on the web — over 2 million ready-made models you can search, inspect in the browser, and download, paying per asset or through a monthly subscription.
Choose Meshy if: You need a custom model that doesn't already exist — generate it from a prompt or reference image to your exact spec, then texture up to 8K, auto-rig, animate with 600+ presets, and export it, all in one tool instead of hunting a marketplace for a close match.
Choose CGTrader if: You need a specific ready-made model that already exists — with instant download, in-browser inspection, and a per-asset license that fits your use.

Internal evaluations, defined metrics, measurable performance.
Type a prompt and get a complete, textured 3D model built from scratch — no digging through a catalog, no guessing at per-asset licenses. Not quite right on the first try? Refine the prompt and regenerate until it matches your vision.
Try text to 3D
Upload one photo or several reference angles and Meshy builds a model that matches it. Great for recreating a concept sketch, a product design, or a character you've already drawn.
Try image to 3DDownloaded a model without the texture you need? Generate PBR maps — albedo, normal, metallic, and roughness — from a text prompt, at up to 8K resolution.

A rigged download isn't guaranteed — it comes down to the seller. Meshy auto-rigs humanoid and quadruped characters and applies any of 600+ animation presets, giving you a game-ready animated model with no manual rigging step.
Try AI animationA downloaded STL might not print cleanly. Meshy checks printability, auto-repairs meshes, and splits multi-color models, so the model you generate actually makes it through the slicer.

(Meshy) saved me hours of work, still had do a little photoshop work but that was negligible. I recommend this for all Artists willing to open up to future tech.

I think the level of extremely fast prototyping can not be understated...even the texture gen(neration) takes a really good first pass...

I created 4 worlds now with Meshy in VRchat...I just love building with meshy. (It was) so much fun. Your imagination is the only limitation now... here you can fly dragons.

Working on this Lovecraft FPS horror game Remnants of R'lyeh. Meshy is really good at generating unique freaky things. About 30% of game models in the trailer are made by Meshy.

Currently working on a traditional Japanese Sento world for VRChat. Finding Meshy extremely useful for adding extra little thematic details quickly. When the surrounding environment is human-created and very high quality you almost can't notice the Meshy objects were not human-created.

CGTrader is a 3D model marketplace where designers sell ready-made models to buyers — game assets, characters, environments, product visualizations, and 3D-printable files, across dedicated 3D Models and 3D Printing storefronts. Buyers search the catalog, preview models in the browser, and download files under a per-asset license. Since late 2024 CGTrader has also offered its own AI 3D Model Generator, which builds new models through third-party AI engines.
CGTrader is a marketplace of existing models made by other people: you find, preview, and buy assets. Meshy is a generator: you describe or show what you need and Meshy creates an original model for you, with its own texturing, rigging, and animation tools. CGTrader does bundle an AI generator too, but it runs on third-party engines and is metered through subscription credits. In short, CGTrader answers 'does this model already exist and can I buy it?' while Meshy answers 'can you make it for me?'.
Generate when you need something custom — an original character, a specific product, or a model matching your own reference. Buy when a suitable model already exists and its license fits, which is often faster and cheaper for one-off assets like props or environment pieces. Many teams do both: generate hero assets and buy filler assets.
Yes, in the sense that Meshy can generate models in a similar style or from your own reference images. Describe the style, function, or category you want in a text prompt, or upload your own images as references. Don't use Meshy to reproduce a specific protected model you don't have rights to — generating from someone else's copyrighted work isn't supported.
Yes — CGTrader added an AI 3D Model Generator that creates models from text or images and offers editing tools like remesh, texture, segment, and animate. It's worth knowing how it works: the generator runs on third-party AI engines — CGTrader's own page names engines like Tripo and Hunyuan — so it's an interface over third-party generation rather than a native engine, and generations are metered through CGTrader credits or its subscription. If you want a generator built and controlled by the same company that trains the models, Meshy runs its own engines end to end.
For occasional one-off assets, buying can be cheaper: paid models on CGTrader range from a few dollars up, and many are free to download. For steady or custom creation, generating is usually cheaper: Meshy's free plan gives you 100 credits monthly, and paid plans start at $20/month with predictable pricing. CGTrader's own subscription is $9.99/month, but its 25 monthly credits are shared between downloads and AI generations, with no rollover.
Meshy: free-plan outputs are CC BY 4.0, and paid plans give you full ownership of everything you generate. CGTrader: each asset carries the license its seller chose — free downloads often require attribution, paid models vary in what they allow, and commercial terms differ from file to file, so you check per asset.
With Meshy, yes: paid-plan assets are yours to use and sell anywhere, and even free-plan outputs allow commercial use with attribution. With CGTrader, it depends on the asset: each seller sets the license, and some models are non-commercial or editorial-only — check the terms on the model page before you buy.
For a custom model, Meshy: a typical generation takes under a minute. For an existing asset, CGTrader can be instant — if the exact model you need already exists, you can download it as soon as you pay. The catch is search time: browsing, comparing, checking licenses, and vetting quality can take longer than generating exactly what you asked for.
Yes. Meshy generates printing-ready models, checks printability, auto-repairs common issues, and exports STL, 3MF, and other formats — with multi-color splitting for single-nozzle printers. CGTrader has a dedicated 3D Printing storefront of printable models in STL and other formats, but printability depends on the seller, and you handle repairs and slicing yourself.
On paid plans, yes — you own every asset you generate and can use or sell it anywhere, including marketplaces. On the free plan, your outputs are licensed under CC BY 4.0, which permits commercial use as long as you credit Meshy. Either way, your models aren't tied to a per-asset license you have to re-check later.
