In October 2025, the Oilers agreed to a two-year, $25 million extension with their star - and arguably best player in the league - Connor McDavid. McDavid was set to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season, but the Oilers were able to push that out until the 2028-29 season with the extension starting in the 2026-27 season. With Leon Draisaitl's eight-year, $112 million extension kicking in this year, McDavid's more team-friendly AAV allows Edmonton to continue building Stanley Cup contenders, after coming off
back-to-back Cup final appearances.
