  • While most NHL stars opt for seven- or eight-year contracts, Matthews signed a shorter, five-year deal in 2019 that allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent in his prime at age 26. The result: a four-year, $53 million extension he inked in 2023.
  • In 2023-24, he led the league in goals for the third time in his eight-year career with 69, the most ever by a U.S.-born player.
