EDITORS' NOTE
October 6, 2026: With this update, we replaced the Apple Watch Series 11 with the Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 3 with the Ultra 4.
- More than two days of battery life
- Upgraded sensors provide better health tracking
- Siri AI offers helpful assistance
- Vitals app delivers more health details and assessments
- Readiness score for assessing wellness
- No design upgrades
- Minor heart rate inaccuracies in testing
The Apple Watch Series 12 feels like a true generational leap over its predecessor. A faster chip helps power context-aware Siri AI, which can answer general-knowledge questions and look up personal information. An entirely redesigned health array takes heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) readings much more frequently. These hardware upgrades improve efficiency, increasing effective battery life. The Series 12 lasted 54 hours on a charge in our testing compared with 43 hours for the Series 11.
The new health-sensing system allows the watch to provide both night and day views along with HRV insights in the Vitals app, and generate a holistic Readiness score that can help you decide how hard to push your workouts each day. It can still track key health metrics like blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), ECG, and skin temperature. Workout Buddy offers words of encouragement and stat updates while you exercise, and a Sleep Score metric provides a holistic view of the data it collects overnight
The Series 12 has the same sleek design as the Series 10 and Series 11, including a bright, vibrant wide-angle OLED display, and adds a new ceramic screen coating for protection. We also appreciate the new single-tap gesture that makes it easier to scroll through widgets in your Smart Stack. Overall, the Series 12 offers the most attractive combination of design, features, and price of the bunch, so it's our top Apple Watch pick for most people.
Athletes: The Series 12 has all of Apple's latest exercise and health-tracking features, including the redesigned heart rate sensing system.
Fashion lovers: Offering a sleek design and the largest selection of finishes and bands of the trio, including a ceramic case option, the Apple Watch Series 12 is the best choice if you want a look tailored to your style.
Workaholics: The Series 12 has tools to help you manage your sleep and stress. The watch can keep you updated if it senses signs of trouble via the Vitals app. The Series 12 will also let you know how hard to push in a day with a Readiness score. It has loads of apps to boost productivity, including Siri AI, which can answer questions with personal context, and a smart stack of widgets that keep you up to date on important reminders.
- Sharp always-on display

- Supports 5G
- Gesture controls

- No QWERTY keyboard for text input

Despite being a year old, the Apple Watch SE 3 still offers excellent value. It has the same processor as the Series 11, plus 5G connectivity, and an always-on display. It offers access to helpful software features such as Sleep Score and Workout Buddy. It even outpaced the Series 11 in our battery life testing, lasting 46 hours. Add in gesture controls, built-in Siri, and wrist temperature sensing, and the SE 3 does most of what you'd expect from a flagship smartwatch for much less money.
Of course, it doesn't do everything that the Series 11 and Series 12 can do. It's missing hypertension notifications, dust protection, blood oxygen and ECG sensors, and a depth gauge. It doesn't have the new health-sensing system or chip found in the Series 12, so it won't provide a Readiness score. It also comes in smaller sizes, and the screen is dimmer with noticeably larger bezels. None of these are deal-breakers, though, and if you're looking for value, the SE 3 is the Apple Watch for you.
Budget shoppers: The Apple Watch SE 3 is the most affordable Apple Watch, and unless you're comparing them side by side or know which features are missing, it has the feel of the Series 12 for $150 less. It even has a similar list of activity, exercise, and sleep-tracking features, including access to all the same third-party apps.
First-time smartwatch buyers: If you're new to smartwatches, the Apple Watch SE 3 will immediately impress with its excellent performance and wide feature set, and you likely don't need to spend more for a flagship smartwatch.
Older or younger users: If you're getting a watch for a family member who's less tech savvy, you can set up the Apple Watch SE 3 for them, and they'll still get the same snappy, polished experience. This is also an excellent pick for school-age children, with support for emergency calling and parental location tracking. When paired with a cellular plan (typically around $10 per month), it serves as a stopgap if you don’t want to buy your child a phone yet.
- Class-leading three-day battery life
- Siri AI provides helpful assistance
- Accurate exercise and health tracking
- Equipped with 5G and emergency satellite communications
- Ultra-durable build
- Twice the price of the standard Apple Watch
- Mostly the same upgrades as the Series 12
The Ultra 4 is the largest, most powerful, and most expensive Apple Watch. It's priced more like an iPhone than an Apple Watch, but it works hard to justify its cost. It has the same powerful S11 chip and AI capabilities as the Series 12, and the same redesigned health-sensing system for accurate heart rate tracking throughout the day. It combines the Series 12's capabilities with the longest battery life of any major smartwatch we've tested, lasting over three full days on a charge with real-world use. Plus, 5G comes standard on the Ultra 3 for fast downloads when you're away from your phone, and it's the only Apple Watch with satellite connectivity. If you're adventuring out of cell service range, you can use satellites to contact emergency services, send texts, and keep your loved ones up to date with your location.
Additionally, the Ultra 4 is much more durable than its siblings and can withstand extreme temperatures, deep submersion, and high altitudes. It also has a better altimeter, depth gauge, and GPS antenna than the Series 12.
Since it matches the Series 12 in exercise monitoring and lifestyle features, you probably don't need to pay the premium for the Ultra 4 for day-to-day activities, but it's worth the money if you're into mountain biking, water expeditions, or other adventurous activities.
Adventurers: If you want a watch to keep up with you on your outdoor excursions, the Ultra 4 is your best bet. It can withstand climbing, hiking, mountain biking, and even extreme water sports like diving and jet skiing. The emergency satellite connectivity will offer peace of mind as you wander off the beaten path.
Endurance athletes: Since it lasts over three full days on a single charge, the Ultra 4 is the best Apple Watch for prolonged activity with GPS tracking. In our testing, it provided accurate heart rate readings that closely matched a chest strap.
Shoppers unwilling to compromise: Even if you don't go on adventures regularly, the Ultra 4 has the most premium and durable build of the line. It also boasts the highest feature count, with dual-frequency GPS, a customizable Action button, an emergency siren, satellite connectivity, and extended ranges for the altimeter and depth gauge. You might not even use all of its features, but if you just want the top model regardless of price, this is the one to get.
