Bold. Grand. Inspired.

About us

Grand St. Settlement connects New Yorkers with opportunities that inspire, services that keep families strong and programs that bring communities closer. We've been inviting New Yorkers to join us in building the communities we need for a century; when we opened our doors in 1916 we served the Lower East Side, but today we connect more than 17,500 New Yorkers throughout the Lower East Side, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Our Community Centers, partner schools and Child & Family Centers are vibrant and safe, creating a home away from home that reflects the cultures and wisdom of the communities' experiences.

  • This #ImpactFriday, Grand Street’s Youth are shining a light on afterschool! 💡 Across our Community Centers and Schools, youth took part in #LightsonAfterschool, a national campaign from Afterschool Alliance that raises awareness of the importance of afterschool funding. As part of the celebration, participants expressed their love of afterschool by writing their feelings of gratitude on paper lightbulbs, creating videos about their sites and favorite staff members, collaborating on art projects to display at their schools, and even competing in a fun obstacle course.

    • Elementary school children stand in a hallway smiling and holding yellow lightbulb-shaped crafts labeled "I light up when I'm..." that unfold to show stickers of activities, celebrating a classroom project.
    • Community group of children, caregivers, staff, and two NYPD officers posing in front of a lit, handmade banner reading "Lights on Baruch Cornerstone," celebrating a neighborhood youth event.
    • Smiling elementary-school student holding a decorated "Lights On Afterschool" lightbulb cutout in front of a classroom bulletin board covered with colorful handprints, student notes, and Minion character cutouts.
    • Four smiling elementary-school girls in uniforms (three in yellow polos, one in maroon) standing against a hallway wall, each proudly holding a colorful character-themed award or bookmark.
    • Group of young children smiling and holding up colored lightbulb drawings to celebrate a classroom "bright ideas" art activity.

  • This #ImpactFriday, we're showing our appreciation to those who go above and beyond at Grand Street: our incredible staff. Powerhouse Arts, Inc. in Brooklyn hosted this year's Staff Appreciation and Development Day. Led by CEO Robert Cordero, the team gathered to learn about our organization's priorities, reflect on our history, celebrate all we've accomplished, and play a friendly game of Family Feud: the Grand Street Way. Special guests made the day all the more exciting! Thank you to Board Member, Dan Heasman, President and CEO of Brooklyn Children's Museum, Atiba Edwards, and Congressman Daniel Goldman for stopping by to celebrate our amazing staff. Thank you to our banking partners at Amalgamated Bank and Spring Bank NY for sharing financial wellness opportunities with our team. We extend a heartfelt thank-you to our dedicated staff of 600 who provide high-quality programs and services to thousands of families across the Lower East Side, Brooklyn, and The Bronx. Thank you for all that you do!

  • Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, BP Antonio Reynoso, City Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez, and Assembly Member Maritza Davila at Grand Street's Williamsburg Community Center. Mayor Mamdani spoke on the expansion of the City's Crisis Management Systems, which includes community-based violence prevention, street outreach, conflict mediation, and access to support in Bushwick, Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. We stand united with elected officials and community organizations working to invest in violence prevention and keep our communities safe. • City officials and community leaders standing behind a podium during a press conference in a sunlit glass-walled lobby beneath a blue "GRAND." banner, with photographers and an audience in the foreground.
  • Grand Street's Executive Team and senior leaders took a step away from our day-to-day work and held a retreat hosted by our partners at the New York Foundation. It was also a nice opportunity for our new Chief of Staff John Blasco to connect more deeply with leaders from across the organization. Our executive coach Gary Bagley walked us through discussions centering leadership development, strategic priorities, advocacy, and impact. Our government relations partner, Jon Bouker of ArentFox Schiff, provided us with a federal policy update tailored to our mission. One of the best parts about working at Grand Street is being able to work alongside kind, dedicated, inspiring colleagues. We're grateful for the opportunity to connect, learn, and grow with each other to further our mission.
