Your staff is eager for greater connection—to the broader community and your mission. But how can you build staff engagement? It starts with one simple principle: For staff to feel seen, they have to see you. In our latest episode of the Smart Communications Podcast, Farra Trompeter, co-director, and Raine Martin, MPA, chief advancement officer at Brooklyn Community Services (BCS), discuss how to break silos and build strong internal communications that boost morale, help staff feel connected to a shared purpose, and promote a more effective exchange of ideas and resources. “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Big challenges can feel overwhelming, but they don’t have to be. As Katherine Fritz of Long Island Cares shared in our recent episode of the RKD Group: Chat podcast, you don’t solve everything at once. You take it step by step. Whether you're leading a team, navigating uncertainty or just trying to get through a tough week, the key is breaking it down and giving yourself the space to move forward. For a second year in a row, we’ve launched our Youth Mentorship Program and continued our commitment to building real access for Bronx youth. This year, we’re honored to collaborate with Fidelis Care - New York to bring this cohort to life! February marked our first session, where our young leaders sat across the table from Fidelis Care professionals for direct, honest conversations about career pathways, higher education, leadership, and navigating professional spaces with confidence. Mentorship isn’t about inspiration alone. It’s about proximity — to opportunity, to leadership, to rooms that shift perspective. That’s what this program is designed to create. Through structured mentorship, our youth gain: • Direct exposure to professionals across industries • Real dialogue about growth and opportunity • Confidence in their voice and lived experience • Clearer vision for the paths ahead At Bronx Burners, mentorship isn’t an add-on — it’s infrastructure. It’s how we translate belief into direction and direction into opportunity. We’re grateful to Fidelis Care for investing in this year’s cohort, and we’re looking forward to watching these young leaders grow — professionally, personally, and with expanded clarity about what’s within reach. Stay tuned for highlights from the journey ahead!

Health and housing go hand in hand – when housing is unstable, health often suffers. Now families at PATH Family Intake Center can get help with both by meeting with public health educators while they wait for a shelter assignment. Educators can help them enroll in health insurance or health care coverage, connect with primary care, prenatal care, and mental health services, and access information and resources to support their family's health. This new initiative helps empower families as they navigate the health care and social service system, with guidance on questions to ask their shelter care team and clear next steps to accessing care. By connecting families to services early, the program helps them take an active role in managing their health and building a strong foundation for long-term well-being. #NYCDSSCares Helen Arteaga PhD Erin Dalton

Opening doors to opportunity, right in the community. For Tanniesha Gilliam, the path to a new career began just steps from her home at Coney Island Houses through New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)'s Jobs-Plus program. Operated by NYCHA's Office of Resident Economic Empowerment and Sustainability (#REES), Jobs-Plus provides residents with free career counseling, resume assistance, financial education, interview preparation, and other supportive services that help build long-term economic stability. After participating in the program, Tanniesha secured a position with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and is already working toward her next career milestone. Since opening in 2025, Jobs-Plus Coney Island has expanded access to employment and financial empowerment resources for residents of Coney Island Houses, Surfside Gardens, and Coney Island I, with more than 250 residents already enrolled.
