Preparing for Court: What to Expect

Before Court

Verify Your Information: Please review your citation to confirm your name, address, phone number, and driver's license details are correct. If any of your contact information needs to be updated, please complete the contact information form.

Reminder Notice:  A reminder notice will be mailed to the address listed on your citation within 28 days of the offense. This notice will include the details about your assigned court date and time.  

Payment of Fines: Full payment of the fines is expected at the resolution of your case, unless probation is ordered. If you need to discuss payment arrangements or alternative options, please contact our office in advance.

On the Day of Court:

  • Dress Code: All attendees are expected to dress in a respectful and appropriate manner. Prohibited attire includes shorts, tank tops, hats (except for religious purposes), non-prescription sunglasses, low-cut or see-through clothing.
  • Arrival Time: Cases are typically processed in the order of your arrival. Plan to remain in court for one to two hours. Mobile devices must be turned off or set to silent mode during your time in the courtroom. 
  • Court Staff: While court staff cannot provide legal advice; they are available to assist you with check-in procedures and help address any administrative questions or concerns regarding your case.  
  • Court Check-In: Upon arrival, please proceed to the check-in station and speak with a court staff member. You will be asked to enter a plea- options: guilty, not guilty, no contest, nolo contendere, or speak with a solicitor.  
  • Solicitor Services: If you would like to consult with a solicitor regarding your case, please notify check-in staff.  
  • Interpreter Services: A Spanish interpreter is available at every court session. For other languages, your case may be transferred to Hall County State Court to ensure appropriate interpretation services.  
  • Public Defender Access: The Public Defender is available during Thursday court sessions to provide legal guidance and plea decisions for eligible individuals.    
  • Judicial Proceeding: When court is in session, the judge will begin with a brief overview of courtroom procedures. The docket will proceed with attorney-represented cases, inmate matters, probation revocation, and individual cases. 

Continuances: (One-Time Reschedules)

The court offers a one-time courtesy reset for individuals unable to attend their scheduled court date; you must request this reset at least 3 days in advance. Individuals may submit their request in person, via telephone, or by email communication. Please be advised that requests made on the actual court date will not be honored.

Language Interpreters:

A Spanish Interpreter is available on all court days. Cases will be transferred to Hall County State Court for other languages to better serve you.

Public Defender

A Public Defender is available to assist you with making informed decisions regarding your case on Thursday during court sessions. Please note that the public defender represents your interests rather than those of the court.
