Choosing an Ox Horn Mug
Mug, cup or set?
The 6 and 6.5 inch horn cups are the simplest pieces: one horn, one design, a good size for mead or a short beer. The beer mug sets hold 24 or 30 oz and add a matching horn shot glass and a bottle opener with a horn handle, which makes them the usual pick for a gift. The 50 oz horn tankard is for people who mean it.
Why horn and not pewter or glass?
Horn is light, it does not break when dropped, and it is warm in the hand. Every piece has its own grain and colour. The trade-off is care: horn is for cold drinks only and always wants hand washing, where a steel or pewter tankard shrugs off both.
Looking after a horn mug
Wash it by hand in cool or lukewarm water with mild soap and let it dry in the open air. Keep it out of the dishwasher, out of hot water and away from direct heat, and the lacquer lining will last for years.
Horn Mugs, FAQ
What are horn mugs made of?
Genuine natural ox horn, cut and polished by hand. Most have the inside sealed with food-grade lacquer; each product page says which.
Can I drink beer from an ox horn mug?
Yes. Beer, ale, mead, cider, wine and spirits are exactly what they are for. Keep to cold drinks only, since heat can soften the lining and warp the horn.
Do horn mugs go in the dishwasher?
No. Heat and long soaking damage both the horn and its lining. A quick hand wash in cool water with mild soap is all a horn mug needs.
Why does my horn mug look different from the photo?
Because it is real horn. The curve, colour and grain of every horn are different, so the mug you receive will be close to the photo but never identical to it.
What comes in a horn beer mug set?
Our sets pair a 24 or 30 oz ox horn beer mug with a matching 3 oz horn shot glass and a stainless steel bottle opener with a horn handle.
