Rules of Oscar’s Grind Strategy
As we mentioned above, it is a bit complicated compared to the others, but it is not difficult to use once you understand the basics. Before we start, let’s mention that Oscar’s Grind strategy is based on even money bets (low/high, red/black, odd/even). You can pick any of these bets, but it must pay 1 to 1 – this is because even money bets offer a higher chance of winning. Here’s how to start using the strategy:
- Choose an even money bet and place 1 ZAR.
- If you lose, continue without changing either the bet type or the amount of the bet.
- If you win, you should increase the amount of the bet by 1 unit.
- However, in any case, your goal is to make a profit of 1 unit in each session.
- To achieve this, you should change the amount of the bet as necessary.
- For example, let’s say that at a certain point, the bet has increased to 6 ZAR. You know that if you win, you will make a profit of 3 units.
- This strategy does not want that: it requires you to reduce your bet to an amount where you can win 1 unit (say, 4 ZAR).
The visual below will help you understand how the basic logic of this system works.

To better understand how the system works, let's use an example session consisting of 10 spins. In the table below, you can see the decision the player should make (and how much profit he makes) based on the spin results.
| Bet Amount (Units) | Spin Result | Total Profit | Player’s Move |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Loss | −1 | Repeat the bet with the same amount |
| 1 | Loss | −2 | Repeat the bet with the same amount |
| 1 | Loss | −3 | Repeat the bet with the same amount |
| 1 | Loss | −4 | Repeat the bet with the same amount |
| 1 | Loss | −5 | Repeat the bet with the same amount |
| 1 | Win | −4 | Increase the bet amount to 2 units |
| 2 | Loss | −6 | Repeat the bet of units |
| 2 | Win | −4 | Increase the bet amount to 3 units |
| 3 | Win | −1 | You now only have to bet 2 units to gain the profit we want |
| 2 | Win | 1 | Session ends |
Oscar’s Grind is a strategy that has been discussed extensively by veteran players and gamblers. Over the years, some have claimed that it is a variant of the Paroli system, while others have likened it to the Contra Bet system. Some think that it is better to start using the strategy after a 5-loss streak. Rather than get into these debates, we want to test it and see how it works. In other words, does Oscar’s Grind bring actual results?
Oscar’s Grind Strategy Tested
Like all other strategies, we created a simulation for Oscar’s Grind with 500 spins using Google Sheets. We used an RNG to ensure the randomness of the results and added four players to the simulation. Each of them started with a bankroll of 1,000 ZAR. After 500 spins, you can see what happened to their money in the image below.

Surprisingly, all four players managed to complete the simulation with a profit – something we don’t see very often. We are not talking about huge profits here: for Player 1, it was 120 ZAR. Player 3 made only 74 ZAR. Player 2, on the other hand, was quite unlucky between spins 100 and 200 but recovered quite quickly (on spin 194) and completed spin 500 with a profit of around 80 ZAR. However, it should be noted that at a certain point, he had to increase his bet to 64 ZAR. In any case, nobody went bankrupt, and everybody finished the session with more money than they started with.
Oscar’s Grind Strategy Has Two Problems
The first problem is that it takes a long time to see results. As the simulation shows, you see almost no effect of the strategy in the first 100 spins. Between the 200th and 300th spins, you start to make a small profit, and this amount increases as you continue playing. However, each session has to last at least 1 - 1.5 hours - otherwise, the strategy is useless. Moreover, even after such a long session, the profit it offers is quite low.
The second problem is that losing streaks can cause the bet amount to increase very rapidly. This increase is not as radical as with Martingale variants, but if you are unlucky, it can even reach 10% of your bankroll. Player 2 is a good example of this - at one point in the simulation, he had to bet 64 ZAR, and if his luck had not changed, this figure would have increased even more.
Should You Use Oscar’s Grind?
If you are a casual player who prefers 10–15-minute game sessions, then no – unless you can complete more than 100 spins, you don’t need to use Oscar’s Grind strategy, as you won’t see any results. You can use it for long sessions (games with several hours of play where you complete at least 250-300 spins). It is a low-risk strategy, so the chances of it having a negative impact on your bankroll are quite low. But keep in mind that the profit margins will also be quite low.
