Editorial Standards and Ethics

These standards explain how Money Fit develops, reviews, publishes, and corrects financial education and service information for the public.

Money Fit is a service of Debt Reduction Services, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) credit counseling organization. Money Fit publishes and maintains the content available on moneyfit.org.

Our editorial commitments

  • People review and approve content before publication.
  • Recommendations and factual conclusions are not for sale.
  • Material claims should be supported by reliable evidence.
  • We correct errors and welcome questions from readers.

1. Human review and responsible use of technology

Money Fit may use research, analytics, publishing, formatting, and artificial-intelligence tools to assist with content development. Those tools can help organize information, identify questions, improve presentation, and support research. They do not independently decide what Money Fit publishes.

  1. Human direction A person defines the reader's question, the page's purpose, and the consumer or compliance considerations that apply.
  2. Research and drafting People may use approved tools to gather, organize, draft, or format information while reviewing the underlying facts and sources.
  3. Human approval Content is reviewed, edited, and approved by a person before publication for accuracy, readability, tone, and consumer impact.

Public AI disclosure: Money Fit may use artificial intelligence to assist with research, organization, drafting, or formatting. Public content is reviewed, verified, and approved by a human before publication.

2. Independence and conflicts of interest

Money Fit's educational content is intended to help people understand financial questions and available options. We do not accept payment to rank a lender, creditor, product, or service more favorably in our educational content.

  • No pay-to-play: We do not sell best-of placements or favorable editorial conclusions.
  • No hidden influence: Compensation does not determine our factual conclusions or the order in which educational options are explained.
  • Material disclosures: We disclose sponsorships, affiliate relationships, or other material relationships when they apply to particular content.
  • Mission alignment: Our goal is to provide useful education and responsible service information, not to keep readers dependent on Money Fit.

3. Accuracy, sources, and updates

Financial topics can change. Laws vary by jurisdiction, creditor policies evolve, and program details may depend on an individual's circumstances. We work to distinguish durable educational principles from information that is time-sensitive, state-specific, or dependent on another organization's rules.

  • Reliable sources: We favor primary and authoritative sources for laws, regulations, government programs, research findings, and institutional policies when those sources are reasonably available.
  • Plain-English explanations: We translate technical language into practical meaning without removing important qualifications or limitations.
  • Appropriate uncertainty: We avoid presenting estimates, typical outcomes, creditor practices, or changing rules as guarantees.
  • Internal review: Material updates and corrections are documented or reviewed through the appropriate editorial, operational, or compliance process.
  • State-specific care: When rules or services vary by state, we identify that limitation and direct readers to appropriate disclosures or qualified assistance.

Money Fit content provides general financial education and service information. It is not legal, tax, investment, or individualized financial advice unless a particular service expressly states otherwise.

4. Privacy and respectful technology

Financial questions can be personal. Our content and technology choices should respect that reality and avoid using a reader's financial stress as a pressure tactic.

  • Data minimization: We aim to collect only the information reasonably needed for a request, service, or website function.
  • Respectful measurement: Website analytics should help us understand performance and usefulness without turning counseling or service-form information into advertising audiences.
  • No pressure design: We avoid countdowns, false urgency, obstructive interfaces, and other design choices intended to force a financial decision.
  • Practical access: We work toward pages that remain readable and usable on mobile devices, slower connections, and common assistive technologies.

Our Privacy Policy explains the information Money Fit collects, how that information is used and disclosed, and the choices available to website visitors.

Personal safety: If you are in a controlling or unsafe financial situation, consider using private browsing, clearing browser history, or using a device and communication account you control.

5. Tone and reader dignity

Financial difficulty is not a moral failing. Money Fit content should acknowledge the seriousness of financial problems without shaming, frightening, or talking down to the person reading.

  • Empathy without drama: We acknowledge stress without intensifying fear to create urgency.
  • Plain language: We explain unfamiliar terms and avoid jargon when ordinary language is clearer.
  • Calm authority: We aim to be direct about consequences, limitations, and next steps without exaggeration.
  • Individual choice: We present options and relevant tradeoffs so readers can make their own decisions.
  • Inclusive examples: We avoid assumptions about family structure, income, ability, background, or the cause of a financial problem.

6. Advertising, sponsorships, and affiliate relationships

Money Fit's educational conclusions are not sold to advertisers, sponsors, creditors, lenders, or product providers. If particular content includes advertising, sponsorship, affiliate links, or paid placement, the relationship should be disclosed clearly where a reader can see it.

  • Sponsored or affiliate content must be labeled in understandable language.
  • Compensation must not be presented as independent evidence that a product or service is appropriate.
  • Material limitations, costs, and conflicts should not be hidden behind promotional language.
  • A commercial relationship does not guarantee coverage, favorable conclusions, or continued inclusion.

7. Corrections, updates, and reader feedback

If content is inaccurate, unclear, incomplete, or materially outdated, we want to review it. The appropriate response may include correcting a factual error, clarifying language, adding context, updating a source, changing a recommendation, or removing content that no longer serves readers responsibly.

  • Factual corrections: We correct confirmed errors as promptly as reasonably practical.
  • Clarifications: We revise language that is technically accurate but likely to create a misleading impression.
  • Material updates: We update content when significant laws, policies, services, or established facts change.
  • Reader reports: We review concerns submitted by readers, clients, subject-matter experts, regulators, partners, and employees.

A correction may be made directly in the page when a separate public correction notice would not add meaningful context. Material errors may receive an explanatory note when transparency requires more than a silent revision.

8. Accountability and governance

Editorial standards are supported by organizational responsibilities, not only individual judgment. Money Fit maintains review, compliance, and quality practices intended to keep public information aligned with consumer needs and the organization's nonprofit mission.

  • Editorial and subject-matter review responsibilities are assigned according to the content and risk involved.
  • Legal, regulatory, privacy, licensing, or claims-related content may require additional compliance review.
  • Public pages should use consistent organizational facts, service descriptions, limitations, and contact information.
  • Funding relationships should not override documented editorial and consumer-protection standards.

Our Funding and Governance page provides additional information about nonprofit structure, funding sources, board and organizational oversight, and public accountability.

9. Report a concern or request a correction

If you believe Money Fit content is inaccurate, unclear, improperly sourced, or inconsistent with these standards, contact us with the page address and a description of the concern.
