About Norfolk Coast
The Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is where most of north Norfolk's holiday cottages sit. The designation protects a near-continuous strip of England's finest coast, from The Wash and the cliffs at Hunstanton in the west to the sand dunes at Winterton in the east. Designated in 1968 and covering more than 450 square kilometres, it takes in around 1,600 of the self-catering cottages on this stretch of coast.
The Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
The AONB sits on rolling chalk and glacial moraine, with the Cromer Ridge (about 90 metres) as its high point, and its character shifts as you travel along it: saltmarsh and shingle in the north, the sand and pinewoods of Holkham and Wells in the middle, and the soft, eroding cliffs east of Cromer. Run by a partnership of local councils and agencies, it stays a working coast as much as a protected one, grazed and farmed and fished, and busy through the winter with internationally important flocks of birds.
Where to stay in the Norfolk Coast AONB
The cottages cluster along the coast, and most of north Norfolk's holiday towns sit inside or beside the AONB:
- Cromer and Sheringham: Victorian seaside towns with piers, Blue Flag beaches and a steam railway between them
- Wells-next-the-Sea: a working quay with the vast sands of Holkham next door
- Blakeney: saltmarsh, a tidal quay and seal trips out to the point
- Brancaster: sailing, a championship golf links and big open sands
- Burnham Market: the smart Georgian village a couple of miles inland
- Hunstanton: the west-facing resort at the western edge, with its red-and-white striped cliffs
- Overstrand and Mundesley: quieter beaches just east of Cromer
- Thornham: a small, smart village out on the marshes
Beaches and nature reserves
This is some of the best birdwatching coast in Britain. Holkham is the showpiece beach, a mile-wide sweep of sand backed by pinewoods, with Brancaster and Wells close behind. Blakeney Point, a National Nature Reserve reached by boat or a long shingle walk, holds one of England's largest grey-seal colonies, and the reserves at Titchwell, Cley and Holme Dunes are world-class for migrating birds. At the eastern end, Winterton Dunes is one of the finest dune systems in the country and another seal haul-out. Three of the 2025 Blue Flag beaches (Sheringham, Cromer and Mundesley) sit within the area.
Walking the Norfolk coast path
The Norfolk Coast Path, now part of the England Coast Path and joined here by the ancient Peddars Way, runs the length of the AONB, so a cottage almost anywhere on this coast puts you a short walk from a long-distance trail. It is flat, well-waymarked going, with the sea on one side and marsh or farmland on the other, bracing in winter and genuinely lovely in early summer.
Good to know before you book
