Self Introduction for Interview: Samples for Freshers and Experienced

A self-introduction for an interview takes about a minute and covers five things: a greeting and your name, your degree or current job, one or two results with numbers, two or three strengths the job needs, and why you want this job. Freshers lead with their degree and best project; experienced candidates lead with their current role. End with "Thank you", not "That's all about me".

Self-introduction format: the five parts

  1. 1

Greeting and name. Good morning, your name, and where you are from if you like. Skip the name in a scheduled one-to-one interview where they already have it.

  2. 2

Education or current job. Freshers: degree, college, year and your score if it is good. Experienced: job title, years of experience and employer.

  3. 3

One or two results. Your best project, internship or work result, with a number: users, marks, money, time saved.

  4. 4

Strengths and skills. Two or three that the job description asks for, with a few words of proof for one of them.

  5. 5

Why this job, and thank you. One sentence on why you want this role at this company, then "Thank you." Not "That's all about me."

Fill-in-the-blanks version

Good morning, and thank you for having me. My name is [name], and I'm from [city]. I [recently completed my degree / have worked as a job title for N years] at [college or company]. Fresher: B.Tech, campus placement HR round

Good morning, and thank you for having me. My name is Rohan Mehta, and I'm from Indore. I'm completing my B.Tech in Computer Science at SGSITS this year, with a CGPA of 7.9. For our final-year project, my team of four built an app that sends daily crop prices to farmers by SMS, and about 120 farmers in our district used it during the trial. I also did a two-month internship at a software company in Pune, where I wrote unit tests for a billing module in Java. My strengths are problem-solving and explaining technical things simply, which I practise as a teaching assistant in our first-year C programming lab. Outside studies, I play table tennis for my college. I'd like to start my career as a software engineer here because your graduate programme puts freshers on live client projects. Thank you.

The project gets a real number (120 farmers), and the strength comes with proof (the teaching assistant role).

Fresher: B.Com, accounts or banking job

Good morning. My name is Sneha Kulkarni, and I'm from Kolhapur. I completed my B.Com from Shivaji University this year with 76%, along with a certificate course in Tally Prime with GST. I'm careful with numbers, and I like work where the totals have to match exactly. In college, I was treasurer of our commerce association and kept the accounts for a ₹45,000 fest budget. I'm applying for the accounts assistant role because I want to build my career in accounting, and your firm handles GST and audit for many kinds of clients. Thank you for this opportunity.

Fresher: BCA or B.Sc IT, technical support

Good morning. My name is Mohammed Arif, and I'm from Hyderabad. I completed my BCA from Osmania University this year with a CGPA of 8.2. I know Python, SQL and basic web development, and for my final-year project I built a library management system in Django that our college library now uses to track 6,000 books. I also did a 45-day internship at a local IT firm, where I set up laptops and solved helpdesk tickets for 60 staff. I'm a patient problem-solver, and I enjoy working out why something isn't working. I'm applying for the technical support role because I want to grow in IT infrastructure, and this role gives me hands-on work from day one. Thank you.

A project that people actually use is stronger than one that only got marks.

Fresher: MBA in HR

Good morning, and thank you for having me. My name is Ananya Iyer, and I'm from Chennai. I've just completed my MBA in Human Resources from a business school in Bengaluru, after a BA in Psychology. During my summer internship at a logistics company, I screened over 300 applications for warehouse roles and helped redesign their onboarding checklist, which cut new-joiner paperwork from three days to one. I'm good at talking to people at every level, from warehouse staff to senior managers, and I'm comfortable with Excel for HR data. I'm applying for the HR executive role because your company is hiring across many new branches, and I want to learn recruitment where the volume is high. Thank you.

One internship result with a before-and-after number does more than a list of HR subjects.

Fresher: B.Sc Nursing, staff nurse

Good morning. My name is Jincy Mathew, and I'm from Kottayam. I completed my B.Sc Nursing at a college in Mangaluru this year, and I'm registered with the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council. During my clinical postings, I worked in the medical ICU, cardiology and paediatric wards, and in my internship year I handled vital signs, medication rounds and documentation for a 20-bed ward under supervision. I'm BLS certified. I stay calm in emergencies, and patients' families often tell me I explain things clearly. I'm applying for the staff nurse position because your critical care unit is where I want to build my experience. Thank you.

Registration and certification come early, because a nurse manager checks them first.

Fresher: diploma in Mechanical Engineering

Good morning. My name is Suresh Yadav, and I'm from Kanpur. I completed my diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a government polytechnic in Kanpur with 72%. During my six-month industrial training at an auto-parts plant, I worked in the CNC turning section, set up jobs from drawings, and checked parts with vernier calipers and micrometers. Our line had a rejection target of under 2%, and my batches stayed within it. I'm good with machines and careful about safety. I'm applying for the production trainee role because I want to grow in manufacturing, and your plant runs modern CNC machines. Thank you.

Naming the machines and measuring tools shows you have actually used them.

Fresher · BPO85 words · about 40 seconds

Fresher: BA graduate, customer support (BPO)

Good morning. My name is Neha Sharma, and I'm from Dehradun. I graduated with a BA in English from DAV College last year. For the past eight months, I've been tutoring school students in English, which has taught me to explain things patiently and in simple words. I type at 45 words a minute, and I'm comfortable working night shifts. I enjoy talking to people and solving their problems, so I'm applying for the customer support associate role in your international voice process. Thank you.

Short, because BPO rounds move fast, and it answers the night-shift question before it is asked.

Experienced112 words · about 50 seconds

Experienced: software engineer, 3 years

Good morning, and thank you for the opportunity. My name is Karthik Reddy. I'm a software engineer with three years of experience at an IT services company in Hyderabad, where I work on a claims-processing system for a US insurer, using Java, Spring Boot and PostgreSQL. Last year, I rebuilt our nightly batch job, which cut processing time from five hours to 50 minutes, and I now review code for two junior developers. Before this, I completed my B.Tech in Electronics and Communication from JNTU Hyderabad. I'm looking to move to a product company where I can own features end to end, and that is how your payments team works. Thank you.

Experienced candidates lead with the job, not the degree. The degree gets one sentence near the end.

Experienced: FMCG sales, 5 years

Good morning. My name is Imran Shaikh, and I'm from Mumbai. I have five years of experience in FMCG sales, the last two as a territory sales officer for a snacks brand, covering 240 retail outlets and three distributors in Thane. I grew my territory's monthly sales from ₹38 lakh to ₹52 lakh in 18 months, mainly by opening 60 new outlets in housing societies our distributors had ignored. I have an MBA in Marketing from a college in Pune. I'm applying for the area sales manager role because I want to lead a sales team, and your company is expanding in the region I already know well. Thank you.

Sales managers listen for two numbers: the size of your territory and how much you grew it.

Good morning, and thank you for having me. My name is Farah Khan, and I'm from Lucknow. I'm applying to your school because of its focus on reading and debate, which is the part of teaching I enjoy most. Thank you.

Board, classes and qualifications first, then results a principal can check.

Career break104 words · about 45 seconds

Returning after a career break

Good morning. My name is Deepa Menon, and I'm from Thrissur. I worked for five years as an accounts executive at a construction company in Kochi, handling payables, GST filing and month-end closing for projects worth about ₹40 crore. In 2023, I took a two-year break to care for my young child. During that time, I completed a course in Tally Prime and advanced Excel, and I kept the accounts for a family friend's business. I'm ready to return full-time, and this accounts role suits me because it is the same work I did before, with tools I have kept up with. Thank you.

The break gets one plain sentence. The next sentence shows the skills stayed current.

Walk-in51 words · about 25 seconds

Walk-in interview: 30 seconds

Good morning. I'm Arjun Patel, from Ahmedabad. I completed my B.Sc in Chemistry this year with 74%, and I did a one-month training in a pharma company's quality control lab, where I ran pH, moisture and titration tests on raw materials. I'm here for the QC chemist trainee walk-in. Thank you.

At a walk-in, the panel sees dozens of people. Say which role you are there for.

Group discussion31 words · about 15 seconds

Group discussion: 20 seconds

Hello everyone. I'm Kavya Rao, a final-year B.E. Electronics student at RV College, Bengaluru. I'm interested in embedded systems, and I lead our college robotics club. Looking forward to the discussion.

Name, college and one thing about you. The discussion is where you are assessed.

How long, in each kind of interview

The same introduction, cut to fit the situation.

HR round (campus or in person)

60 to 90 seconds. All five parts. This is the full version.

Technical round

30 to 45 seconds. Degree, the technologies you know, and your best project. Then let them ask.

Walk-in interview

20 to 30 seconds. Name, place, qualification, one relevant fact, and the role you came for.

Group discussion

15 to 20 seconds. Name, college or job, and one interest. Save your points for the discussion.

Video or phone interview

45 to 60 seconds. The full version, a little shorter and slower. On video, look at the camera.

What to leave out

Many of us learned a school-style self-introduction: name, native place, parents' jobs, siblings, hobbies. In a job interview, the panel has your resume and wants to know if you can do the work.

  • Your parents' jobs, siblings and native place in detail (unless they ask)
  • Class X and XII marks, unless the company has a cut-off and asks
  • Hobbies like "listening to music" or "surfing the internet"
  • Adjectives without proof: "hardworking, sincere, quick learner"
  • Salary, and complaints about your college or employer

If they ask about your family

Answer in one or two sentences and, if you can, connect it to work:

"My father runs a small hardware shop in Indore and my mother is a schoolteacher. I have a younger sister in Class 12. Helping in the shop on weekends is where I learned to deal with customers."

Common mistakes

"Myself Rohan"

"Myself" can't start a sentence in English, and interviewers in English-medium companies notice. Say "My name is Rohan" or "I'm Rohan".

Starting from school

Your schooling is on your resume. Start with your degree or current job.

The family paragraph

Parents' occupations and siblings take up the 20 seconds when the panel is most attentive. Give them only if asked.

"That's all about me"

It ends on nothing. End on why you want this job, then "Thank you."

Learning it word for word

A memorised introduction sounds recited, and an interruption can derail it. Learn the five parts and your numbers.

Rushing

Nervous candidates speak fast. Pause after your name and after your result: the result is what you want them to remember.

After the introduction

The panel's next questions come from your introduction and your resume: "Why should we hire you?", your strengths and weaknesses, and why you want to leave or join. Prepare them next.

Frequently asked questions

How do I introduce myself in an interview?

Take about a minute and cover five things: a greeting and your name, your degree or current job, one or two results with numbers, two or three strengths the job needs, and why you want this job. End with "Thank you." Keep it about work and study, not your family or school history.

How do I give a self-introduction as a fresher?

Start with your name, degree, college and graduation year, and your CGPA or percentage if it is good. Then give your best project or internship with a number in it, two or three skills from the job description, and one line on why you want this role. A fresher introduction runs about 60 seconds, or 30 at a walk-in.

How long should a self-introduction be?

60 to 90 seconds in an HR round, which is about 130 to 200 words spoken. 30 to 45 seconds in a technical round, 20 to 30 at a walk-in, and 15 to 20 in a group discussion. Past two minutes, the panel stops listening.

Should I say "Myself" to introduce myself?

No. "Myself Priya" is common in Indian English, but it isn't correct English, and interviewers at English-medium companies notice it. Say "My name is Priya" or "I'm Priya".

Should I mention my family background?

Not in your introduction. Many of us learned a school-style introduction that covers our parents' jobs and siblings, but the panel is deciding whether you can do the job. If they ask about your family, answer in one or two sentences, and connect it to work if you can: "My father runs a hardware shop, and helping there on weekends is where I learned to deal with customers."

Should I mention my hobbies?

One line, and only if it says something about you: "I play table tennis for my college" shows commitment, "I like listening to music" says nothing. Put it just before your closing line so you still end on the job.

Should I mention my marks?

Mention your degree CGPA or percentage if it is good, in one phrase. Class X and XII marks belong on your resume, not in your introduction, unless the company has a cut-off and asks.

Should I say "sir" or "ma'am"?

"Good morning" works for any panel. "Sir" and "ma'am" are polite in Indian interviews, but with a mixed panel, "Good morning, everyone" avoids guessing. At multinationals, interviewers often prefer first names after they introduce themselves.

Is a self-introduction the same as "Tell me about yourself"?

In an interview, yes: both want who you are now, what you have done and why you are here. The self-introduction adds your name and a greeting at the start, which matters at walk-ins, campus drives and group discussions, where the panel may not have your resume in front of them.

How do I introduce myself in a video interview?

Use the same five parts, slightly shorter and slower. Look at the camera rather than the screen, sit with light in front of you, and test your microphone first. For a recorded video interview, finish 10 seconds before the time limit.

Can I give my self-introduction in Hindi?

Use the language of the interview. For private-sector, multinational and BPO interviews, that is English, and your English is part of what is being assessed. For government jobs or Hindi-medium roles, Hindi is fine if the panel is speaking it.

How do I end my self-introduction?

With one sentence on why you want this job at this company, then "Thank you." For example: "I'm applying for this role because your graduate programme puts freshers on live projects. Thank you." Avoid "That's all about me" or trailing off.

Is the introduction builder free, and do you keep what I type?

It is free, with no sign-up. Your introduction is put together in your browser from what you type. If you upload a CV, we read its text to suggest lines from it and don't keep the file.
