Shelf Quest - Matthew Lillard
Matthew Lillard is a very busy man, but if he has some downtime you can find him kicking butt at FIFA. We met up with Lillard at videogamesnewyork ahead of the Scream 7 premiere, to take a walk through his gaming memories — from getting destroyed by Dragon's Lair at the arcades when he was a kid, to getting carried by his son in Apex Legends. He may not be good — and he'll be the first to tell you that! — but he's in it for the fun.
Max Burkholder - Shelf Quest Episode 2
Max Burkholder grew up with "unlimited screentime," as a busy child actor going to work and school. He fell in love with video games through Kingdom Hearts, which helped him come down from the stress of being on the set of films like The Purge, Daddy Day Care and Parenthood. Now he somehow finds time for games while starring as the teen version of Mark Wahlberg's character on Peacock's Ted series, ploughing through long RPGs like Final Fantasy 16 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as well as playthroughs of critically acclaimed puzzlers like Blue Prince. He was excited to walk out of videogamesnewyork with a new copy of Bravely Default for the Nintendo Switch 2. This is Shelf Quest, our monthly series exploring gaming nostalgia, and how games have impacted our lives. We'll be back next month with a brand new guest, and more stories to tell.
Gaten Matarazzo | Shelf Quest Episode 3
Child actors either get unlimited screentime, or none at all. Gaten Matarazzo grew up in a household where everything from Call of Duty to Cartoon Network was forbidden, so he snuck video games where he could. That all started to change when he landed the role of Dustin Henderson on Netflix's megahit, Stranger Things. Gaten broadend his horizons with The Legend of Zelda, Spider-Man, and Uncharted. He reveals his underrated first Zelda game, as well as what he considers "the best video game experience that I've ever had." Now that Stranger Things wrapped, Gaten has been teeing up the next big thing. Pizza Movie (from directors Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, also known the YouTube sketch comedy duo BriTANick), is his first film to be released since the finale of Stranger Things aired in December 2025. It's streaming now on Hulu and Disney Plus.
Shelf Quest episode 4: Matthew Kim
K-pop idol and actor Matthew Kim (or Big Matthew, as fans of the group KARD know him) moved to Korea to pursue a career in entertainment — but games keep him in touch with his family. His love of video games started with his father, who was "nasty" on Super Mario, and continues today when he plays Call of Duty: Warzone with his little brother.
Samara Weaving | Shelf Quest Episode 5
Samara Weaving is an agent of chaos who loves to cause mayhem in video games. After toying with The Sims and Mario Kart as a kid, she really knuckled down and got into Red Dead Redemption after watching her husband play — and she never looked back. The star of Carolina Caroline and Ready or Not enjoys using films and games to let out her wild side. She loves action and just a liiiiiittle bit of violence. And yet she had a soft spot for her Sims. Join Sam on this episode of Shelf Quest as she browses the shelves of videogamesnewyork and reminisces on how she got into gaming, and her dreams for her newborn daughter. Sam Weaving's latest film Carolina Caroline is in theaters now!
Contrapoints devours forbidden, decadent games | Shelf Quest
YouTuber Natalie Wynn, known as streamer and video essayist ContraPoints, viewed gaming as a forbidden delicacy when she was a kid. But that only made her want it more. From The Sims and Age of Empires, to horror games like Resident Evil Requiem and the Fears to Fathom series, Natalie played it all and now she streams games on her second channel, ContraPointsLive. She especially loves low-fidelity horror games that evoke the faintly remembered games of her childhood. We met up with Natalie at videogamesnewyork in the East Village, to spark some gaming memories and explore the shelves. She finds some deep pulls (Gauntlet Dark Legacy, anyone??) and digs into the "silent indifference" of The Sims. If you ever wanted a video essay on gaming from Natalie, get excited. Watch it all on Shelf Quest!
