How I Broke into Cybersecurity: The 3 Courses That Launched My Career: When I first set out to break into cybersecurity, I had a big question: Should I take ISC2’s Certified in Cybersecurity, Google’s Cybersecurity Professional Certificate, or Cisco’s Junior Cybersecurity Pathway? My answer? Take all three. Each of these programs gave me something different — and together, they built the strong foundation I needed to launch my cybersecurity journey. Here's what I gained from each: 1. ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) This was my entry point into the industry. The CC certification isn’t just foundational — it’s also globally recognized and connects you to ISC2’s professional network. I learned core concepts like incident response, business continuity, and disaster recovery while also gaining access to a community of professionals I wouldn’t have met otherwise. 2. Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate Hosted on Coursera, this 8-course program provided clear direction and helped me explore different areas of cybersecurity. The hands-on labs, portfolio-worthy assignments, and tools like SIEMs, Linux, and Python gave me practical skills that employers look for. 3. Cisco Junior Cybersecurity Analyst Pathway This was the most intense — over 120 hours of learning across 8 modules. I dove deep into networking, endpoint protection, GRC, and more. Using Cisco Packet Tracer made the technical concepts click in ways that theory alone couldn’t. Final thoughts? If you’re just starting out, don’t limit yourself to one course. During the making of this CNA feature, I was asked what kind of #incentives are needed to attract more data center operators to Indonesia. My answer: 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁. On the fiscal side: competitive #tax incentives, accelerated depreciation for #green infrastructure, and clear #customs policies for critical equipment matter. But equally important are non-fiscal incentives: #policy consistency, faster #permitting, transparent access to power and land, and most importantly ....𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲. Investors come not only because Indonesia is cost-effective, but because it is predictable, sustainable, and capable of operating data centers at global #standards. Human capital is the strongest incentive of all. Indonesia has a young and capable #workforce, yet the education system has not moved at the same speed as the data center industry. Most graduates are strong in theory, but data centers demand hands-on operational readiness: power systems, cooling, uptime discipline, safety culture, and incident response. These are not skills learned from textbooks alone. Modern data centers are no longer just IT facilities. They are energy-intensive infrastructure. Operators now need professionals who understand not only how servers run, but how energy flows...from efficiency and renewable integration to #carbon accountability and long-term sustainability planning. For us, the future data center engineer is a hybrid professional: technically excellent, energy-aware, and environmentally responsible. The data centre skills gap isn’t hypothetical. It’s a real issue for the industry. Yondr Group and CBRE are doing something about it; launching a global apprenticeship programme that will roll out across every operational Yondr site worldwide. This is how you actually build a pipeline. Not with wishful thinking, but by embedding apprentices on site, pairing them with senior teams, and giving them real training in critical engineering, operations, and admin; aligned with local frameworks in each region. The programme has already kicked off at Yondr’s 100MW Slough campus. Two apprentices per building, across three data centres. Projects in the Netherlands, Germany, the US, and Malaysia are next. 12 apprentices globally by end of 2025 is the starting target. Expect that to grow fast. Paul Hood at Yondr (ex-apprentice himself) put it well: this isn’t just about hiring. It’s about shaping people into professionals who can keep hyperscale infrastructure running 24/7/365. CBRE’s Andrew Chilcott is right to call this out too; data centre operations isn’t like managing other property. It demands specific, highly skilled talent. You don’t get that by accident. You build it. This is exactly the kind of long-view, boots-on-the-ground action the industry needs more of. Not just to solve the skills crisis but to prevent the next one.
