Shiny Objects Everywhere! How Can I Win?

Shiny Objects Everywhere! How Can I Win?

It is so hard to ignore the shiny objects when you LOVE SHINY OBJECTS!! In our continuing discussions of "what can I do to get things done?" I will break down this month's tips into the 5 senses.

1) Hearing - Wear noise-canceling headphones or put on ambient music or sounds.

2) Sight - Blinders. Ha! no, go to a place with little distraction. I've always wanted to escape to the woods and not come out until my project is complete. This can more easily be done on a chair or couch with a pleasant view from a window.

3) Smell - Places like coffee shops can work. Places like coffee shops might not work. Sometimes the smells of a place can be distracting or comforting. For me, it goes back to point #1, too noisy. You need to do you. For me, a quiet cafe can be perfect.

4) Touch - Get a comfy chair and get to work. If you are sitting in a place that is uncomfortable, you will only fidget. Public libraries have some very comfortable work areas and sometimes people work best lying in bed. You know what you like, find it and you won't get up.

5) Taste - I can't work if I am hungry. I will get up 100x to the kitchen or keep staring at the menu of the place I am sitting at. Eat or grab a big glass of water. Maybe decide that once you finish that glass, you give yourself a break. Small wins! Look up "brain food" and pick your favorites.

How do I know that this works? I got this off of my list after lunch, while sitting with my feet up on my couch by a window, with my laptop, music in the background, and the smell of a warm puppy beside me. Done!

What is your biggest distraction? I'd love to hear it.

I love shiny objects, too!! My mind drifts when I'm in creator or strategy mode. I get to think big during these times. After writing down all my thoughts, I grab a cup of hot chocolate as a reward for thinking big. Yum!
