Terri Herrmann shared thisIt’s so cool when your personal and professional life collide into one magical moment. This past July, my daughter Grace got married. It was so amazing to celebrate this season of life with her. From the bridal shower planning, a mother-daughter only trip to FL, getting to tag along on the bachelorette party to having my dining room stock piled with wedding decor, it’s been an incredible experience. I'm a little sad it's over. As a mom and a professional, I always put a lot of thought into major career decisions. Should I take the new job? Do I accept the added responsibility and scope? How will this next move impact my ability to be a good mom? You see, I never believed in the rhetoric that you can’t be great at your job, climb the ladder AND be a good parent. I decided I could do both. The key was being fully present and intentional for the moments that matter. Of course there are always moments you wish you could have back, but in retrospect, I did pretty well. At her wedding she had a surprise planned for me. She dedicated her bouquet to me. With that dedication, she gave a short speech. I will never forget it. She referred to me as her role model and even though I had a big job, she told me (and all the guests) I was there to support her and to cheer her on for all the important moments. I will hold on to that moment forever. Just last week she started her new job as an attorney and I could not be more proud of the smart, confident, kind and beautiful person she has become. Go Grace!!

When I was the VP of Marketing for an HR tech company Montage, we were at the point of scale where we needed to hire a product marketing manager. Sandi Green was one of the candidates for consideration. Her resume was amazing. I made an immediate connection to her in the interview process. I was a bit scared (threatened if I'm being real honest). My internal monologue was telling me things like "she could take your job" and "she might be better than you." Then I put my big girl pants on and said to myself. Sandi is what the business needs right now. She will learn from me and I will learn from her and together we will be better. I hired her and we were off to the races. So glad I did. It wasn't long before Montage was acquired and we went our separate ways but still kept in touch. Now we are featured together as members of Wednesday Women! #womenintech #lessonsinleadership #community #womenrock

Terri Herrmann shared thisK-J.D. My daughter Grace Herrmann has been a student for the last 20 years. The moment the dean said "congratulations, you are no longer students you are lawyers" was an emotional moment for me. I fought back tears several times during the hooding ceremony. I was inspired by the passion of the student speakers, grounded by the keynote and in awe of all the students who have the opportunity to continue to shape and advance their profession. It feels like yesterday when I was forcing Grace on the school bus. As Grace advanced through school and sports and established her social circle, I gained so much respect and admiration for her intelligence, drive, grit and discipline. Whenever she set her mind to achieving a goal, I had zero doubt she was going to achieve it. I was honored she came to me along the way to help her manage setbacks and challenges. I am beaming with pride as I see the woman she has become. In September she will be a practicing attorney in Milwaukee. (I'm beyond thrilled she decided to stay close to home!) Congratulations baby girl! #proudmom

Terri Herrmann shared thisIf you're half in, you're all out. Agreed? For those of you who know me well, you know I'm reading The Five Types of Wealth by Sahil Bloom. This book is so good for me for so many reasons. One of the concepts and messages was so powerful I had to share. First he talks about a "razor" which is a rule of thumb for decision making. In this case he was talking about the opportunity razor. Here's the punchline. "To do anything meaningful in life, it will take a long time. Am I willing to do the losing version of this thing to earn the winning version?" He then goes on to say there is a common thread between all those who have reached the summit (of success). All the people who have reached the summit enjoyed the mud. The losing version is the cost of entry for the winning version. Does this resonate with you? Can you relate? I am all in! P.S. This picture has nothing to do with this post. Just enjoying a beautiful day last week in downtown Oconomowoc (say that ten times fast).

Terri Herrmann liked thisTerri Herrmann liked thisSometimes the most powerful lessons in perseverance come from the most unexpected places. This week, I kicked off a new cheerleading season with 20 middle school girls. Five had been cut from the team in previous years. Some not once, but twice. They could have walked away. Decided it wasn’t for them. Let someone else’s decision define what they were capable of. But they didn’t. Some joined our noncompetitive team, cheering on their peers while building their own skills and confidence. Others found different ways to train and prepare for another shot. And this year? They came back and earned their spot. What stood out to me wasn’t just how much they’d improved. It was the fight they brought with them. The courage to fall short, put in the work, and try again. As a coach, I couldn’t be prouder. As a people leader, I couldn’t help but see the bigger lesson. How often do we hear “no” and treat it as the end of the story? We miss the promotion. The opportunity. The team. Sometimes we mistake a decision about where we are today for a verdict on where we can go tomorrow. We can’t always choose the disappointments we face, but we can choose who we become because of them. Take the feedback. Find another path. Put in the work. Show up again. Here’s to the kids who came back. And to all of us who need the reminder that “not yet” is not the same as “never.”
