Jonathan Schulhof shared thisJamie Dimon, Jim Farley, Gretchen Whitmer, and Michigan Central came together at Newlab to meet our member companies and brainstorm initiatives to rapidly scale critical technologies. The conversations were inspiring and actionable. We are very enthusiastic about the road ahead.Jonathan Schulhof shared thisThe United States needs to expand domestic production of critical components and advanced manufacturing capabilities to protect our long-term economic and national security. Our main barrier in achieving that aim is not the availability of technology or capital, but in coordinating the market around investable opportunities. Newlab, JPMorganChase, State of Michigan, Ford Motor Company, and Michigan Central are launching Michigan LIFT, a first-of-its-kind public-private platform that brings together billions of dollars in industrial demand, private capital, and state resources to accelerate the commercialization of critical technologies that can address critical supply chain gaps and expand competitive production capacity in Michigan. Jonathan Schulhof reposted thisJonathan Schulhof reposted thisNewlab is launching in the United Kingdom in partnership with the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) to support commercialization of critical technologies to industrial scale. ARIA was created in 2023 by an Act of Parliament to fund breakthrough R&D in underexplored areas to catalyze new paths to prosperity for the UK and the world. They empower scientists and engineers to pursue research that is too speculative, too hard, or too interdisciplinary to pursue elsewhere. Once those teams hit the boundary between research and real-world outcomes, ARIA taps a selective group of Activation Partners with the commercial and technical experience to support translation of research to industrial scale. As part of the newly announced Activation Partner cohort, Newlab will connect critical technology ARIA-funded research teams with manufacturers, testbeds, regional industry partners, and investors to move promising prototypes towards real-world industrial applications. Newlab and ARIA aim to shape a repeatable model for translating critical research at the intersection of cutting edge science and essential industry; enabling new technology to scale, expanding strategic industrial capabilities, and building long-term economic value for the UK. The partnership is the first step for Newlab to expand our commercialization model across the pond, while strengthening the UK’s long-term industrial competitiveness and economic resilience. Jonathan Schulhof shared thisToday is my last day at New York City Economic Development Corporation. I leave confident that my team is firing on all cylinders, and that our programs are thriving. We engaged startups, investors, corporations, non-profits, academia, and government partners to research and build innovation ecosystems that serve the public interest. We induced private support to multiply our public funds. And we established lasting institutions and programs that will offer entrepreneurship and employment opportunities to countless New Yorkers for many years to come. Thank you to the myriad stakeholders that have joined our efforts. With an enhanced perspective on the accelerating pace of innovation and on the power of public-private partnerships, I am returning to the private sector. To my colleagues and team: You have been a joy to work with and I am immensely grateful for our time together. I will root for your continued success. Farewell. https://lnkd.in/eKkNv8Md

We’re inviting CDR technology companies, startups, and project developers with a viable path to deployment in Louisiana to apply – from pilot and demonstration projects to commercial-scale opportunities. Selected participants will receive commercialization support from Newlab and direct engagement with a working group of Louisiana state agencies, academic, and industry partners to address siting, permitting, feedstock, and CO₂ transport and storage. Grant funding may also be available to support proposed projects tied to deployment in Louisiana. The Initiative is seeking to support CDR developers across biomass-based removal, direct air capture, marine CDR, mineralization and enhanced rock weathering, and advanced measurement, reporting, and verification platforms. Jonathan Schulhof liked thisJonathan Schulhof liked thisHospitals have never been short of good ideas. What they lack is a way to scale them. ARC, founded at Sheba Medical Center, works on the premise of change from within. Clinicians identify the problem and build the solution and the hospital shares in the value. Its network now spans more than 30 health systems in 12 countries, including global leaders such as Great Ormond Street, Charité and Karolinska. Yesterday, ARC and Redesign Health announced they are coming together. Redesign is a venture firm that puts engineers and AI researchers inside health systems to build alongside their clinicians. With AVIA set to join too, the network reaches more than 100 health systems on five continents. An idea proven on one ward can reach many hospitals. Charité has already made that choice, opening its own ARC centre this year. In my recent management lecture there, I argued that technology now spreads at the speed of software. The harder problem is absorption: whether the organisation changes around it.That’s part of what building from within solves. Clinicians who design a change are already invested in making it work. Healthcare is an additive system: new things typically sit on top of what we already do. Part of the reason is that we rarely know what things really cost or achieve. If we knew the numbers better, we would find it easier to stop doing things. However, it also takes will. What stayed with me was how openly Charité has committed to change. That’s a hard thing for any institution, let alone one founded in 1710. Congratulations to Eyal Zimlichman, Steve Klasko and the teams at ARC, Sheba and Redesign. What would your hospital stop doing to make room for the new? ARC, Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Redesign Health, Hemant Taneja, Stephen Klasko, Eyal Zimlichman, MD, Heyo K. Yesterday's announcement of a $284M public-private investment in NYU's new quantum fabrication facility (QFab) is an exciting step toward positioning NYC as a global leader in quantum innovation—while creating pathways for more New Yorkers to participate in and benefit from this emerging industry. A HUGE congratulations to our incredible New York City Economic Development Corporation team and partners at NYU Tandon School of Engineering who worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life. So much persistence, creativity, and collaboration went into making this happen. Here's to building the next frontier of innovation AND ensuring its benefits are broadly shared! Jonathan Schulhof liked thisJonathan Schulhof liked thisQuantum can sound like science fiction: supercomputers, time travel, and very complicated-looking machines. But yesterday was about something much more practical. The time travel can wait. It's about turning great science into real jobs, real businesses, and real opportunity for New Yorkers. The stakes are clear. Quantum is projected to be as much as a $2.7 trillion global industry by 2035. At NYCEDC, our view is straightforward: we want that industry here, and we want New Yorkers leading the work. That's why we're supporting NYU with a $29 million capital award. At QFAB, researchers will move new quantum ideas from the lab into the marketplace. That means growing quantum companies here, creating good jobs and reaching more New Yorkers. The question isn't whether New York City can build the future. We always have. The real question is how we make sure more New Yorkers get to help build it and benefit from it. As Schrödinger's cat reminds us, two states that seem contradictory can exist at the same time. Economic development works the same way. Growth and economic justice aren't competing forces. They can reinforce each other.

Dimon credited the city of Detroit with showing over the past decade “what is possible when business, government and community leaders work together for the long term,” adding that Michigan LIFT will work to connect customer demand, capital and public resources “so more companies can grow, more workers can participate and more critical capabilities can scale here in the United States.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eeM26fCa
