Dennis Crowley shared thisThis, 10000000x. (and "friendly, less lonely internet" is one hell of a north star, btw) > Nostalgia for Foursquare is less of a story about missed equity upside than a story about a generation of New York tech kids, before we all had kids, trying to build a friendlier, less lonely internet.Dennis Crowley shared thisThank you, Dennis Crowley. You knocked over the first domino in a series of events that led to me getting back into venture after my own failed startup, and you've always reminded people that tech's goal should be to bring us together in the real world. For those of you younger folks in tech who've seen the news about Foursquare's sale and are scratching your head as to why people are so nostalgic about this company, you have to understand what it meant to New York City tech at the time. In late 2008, the financial crisis had put venture funding in New York City into a deep freeze. The New York startup scene was seen as being driven by Wall Street wealth, and if that dried up, New York and the entrepreneurs in it were fully expected to pick up their marbles and go home (the way they did when the dot-com era burst). There wasn't a previous generation of tech startups to go back to working at large tech companies, the way it was in the Bay Area. Instead, quite the opposite happened. The hottest startup funding in 2009 didn't come out of the Valley, and it didn't come out of Boston. It blew up in the late summer of 2009 in New York City. Just before that, a string of blog posts between me (https://lnkd.in/e-AFURZQ), Fred Wilson (https://lnkd.in/e45HYBGR), and M.G. Siegler (https://lnkd.in/e28uttJH) at TechCrunch kicked off a hyper-competitive month for funding the next big thing in social networking. As Eric Friedman put it (https://lnkd.in/e8MBEJ4m), Foursquare "had captured the zeitgeist of New York tech" and "became a magnet for talent." Moreover, it was the backbone of a scene that was fueled by meetup hopping and IRL gatherings. Nostalgia for Foursquare is less of a story about missed equity upside than a story about a generation of New York tech kids, before we all had kids, trying to build a friendlier, less lonely internet. Plus, true New Yorkers always have a bit of place nostalgia for the spots that used to be. I don't miss the digital crown of Mayorship of Coffee Shop and my hard fought battle with Fred Wilson for it nearly as much as I miss the actual place and actually running into him and nearly everyone else from the tech community there. Dennis Crowley shared thisFoursquare was acquired last month. The outcome was disappointing. It's taken me a while to write this, but I think I'm finally done grieving it. Here are some thoughts on our final years, an effort to honor the team who helped build & maintain FSQ's legacy, and my attempt to finally get some closure. (LinkedIn feels a little too self-congratulatory these days, so I wrote it on Substack.) https://lnkd.in/efB2iENQ

Dennis Crowley shared thisWrote another one of these. I am desperate to get in a rhythm of doing it 2x/month. Writing these helps me organize my thinking / quiet my brain. Dennis Crowley shared thisBig fan of betaworks – I work out of the space, BeeBot (Hopscotch Labs) is a BW company (seed round!) and was a part of one of the AI Agent camps...Dennis Crowley shared thiseveryone's selling the version of AI agents where they save you time. we at betaworks are more interested in the hard problems that come next. as agents take on more of the work, they create a whole new set of second-order problems — trust and verification, coordination, terraforming the internet for agentic use, new marketplaces, and making the physical world legible to AI. i had the pleasure of speaking with the incredibly sharp Josipa Majic Predin at Forbes on how we’re placing our next bets at @betaworks - i'm only mildly biased but i'd say it's definitely worth the read. check out the full article at: https://lnkd.in/g5jdJ4UMVCs Fund AI Agents' Second-Order Fallout Before It HitsVCs Fund AI Agents' Second-Order Fallout Before It Hits

Dennis Crowley shared thisTen years ago we started a semi-pro soccer team in Kingston. We had this thesis that if you built a club that local kids aspired to play for, some of those kids would stick with soccer long enough to develop as players that could make the team. And now – 10 years in – we're seeing those same kids who were hounding autographs ten years ago starting on our First Team (and giving autographs to the next gen of 10yo's). Cool things happen when your D4 club sticks around for ten years. (ps: Elias Curran and Ayden Campbell) – Kingston Stockade Football Club (Stockade FC) Oh, and some up and see a game! stockadefc.com (only 2 hours from NYC)
