Super human Meghan Doyle, kudos to you for navigating the complexities of the U.S. healthcare system to bring payers, providers, and patients together to give women access and information about necessary maternal care services! You are brave, persistent, and an incredible change maker. Thank you. The U.S. should not be ranked 55th in the world for maternal mortality (the worst among high income countries as ranked by the World Health Organization) and 1st in global spend per birth. Thank you also to IL Governor JB Pritzker for ushering in regulations in IL to require payer reimbursement for maternal health services!

👂 “I had postpartum depression with my first and it was so hard. I eventually got care, but it would have been so much easier with something like Partum.” Hearing feedback like this was the highlight of my Chicago Venture Summit, where I pitched Partum Health alongside our partner and investor Hannah Levine of UChicago Medicine Ventures. It was a fantastic day - sharing more about Partum on stage in my hometown, spending time with investors both current and future, 😉 and catching up with Chicago founders and healthcare leaders who genuinely root so hard for one another. The best part wasn’t the conversations about capital raises or payer contracts. It was what people said after the pitch - parents who have lived it and women who want something better were FEELING SEEN! “I wish I had this. There were so many issues to navigate with my first. He’s 10 and I teared up thinking back on it.” “I’m so glad this is being built before I have kids. I’ve seen what other women in my life go through and we need this.” It's so rewarding to tell these parents that we’re making real progress. These aren’t abstract wishes anymore. In the last year: → We scaled up our care for families with Medicaid in Illinois, with no referral needed and no out-of-pocket cost for doula care → We got in-network for doula care with BCBSIL in Illinois and with UnitedHealthcare commercial plans in Illinois and Michigan → We launched two health system partnerships, including embedded 24/7 doula care at the UChicago Medicine Family Birth Center in Hyde Park, and a partnership with Rush University → We built infrastructure for our next phase of growth, e.g., AI-assisted patient navigation and programs to grow the number of certified doulas There’s a long way to go to make elevated care available to every family, no matter their zip code or insurance card. But more and more, families saying “I wish I had this” are hearing “now you can have it.” Thank you to Hannah Levine and the UCM Ventures team, to Kerry Rupp for all of the encouragement and support, to the Summit organizers at World Business Chicago, especially Manleen Rajput and Abin Kuriakose for championing startups and shining the spotlight on health tech. And most of all, I'm so grateful to everyone who stopped to share their story. #MaternalHealth #DoulaCare #HealthEquity #MaternityCare

  • We are excited to see substantial support at this stage for the novelty of Parasol Med Tech’s approach to treating AFib, which aims to differentiate from leading devices today by having a tailored fit to each patient. With millions of people living with AFib and most cases untreated today, the opportunity is significant.

Parasol Med Tech has raised an oversubscribed $2.75M pre-seed. Harper Court Ventures (Ayo Roberts), UCM Ventures (Hannah Levine) and Cardiovascular Innovation Ventures (Richard Chazal) took part. Parasol Med Tech is a University of Chicago spinout developing a stroke-prevention device for people with atrial fibrillation. Its catheter-and-gel system is designed to seal the left atrial appendage, the part of the heart where clots form, without leaving a metal implant in the body. The gel is meant to conform to each patient's anatomy, which targets the leaks and clots that can form around today's fixed-shape devices. The system is investigational and has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Parasol will use the funding for R&D and to test, iterate and optimize its catheter-and-gel system. It also won $250,000 from the University of Chicago's George Shultz Innovation Fund and has joined the UChicago Science Incubator. Founders: Atman Shah, founder and chief medical officer, is an interventional cardiologist and cardiac cath lab director at UChicago Medicine and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He has performed more than 1,000 left atrial appendage closure procedures. Evan Singer, president and CEO, led new product commercialization and marketing behind an FDA 510(k) clearance for a Class II device at Align Technology. As CEO of SmartBiz, he built a fintech and led its acquisition of a nationally chartered bank.

Thank you to the World Business Chicago team for hosting the Future of Health Summit yesterday. It was a privilege to share the story of UCM Ventures, UChicago Medicine’s inaugural venture investment vehicle, with hundreds of founders, investors, health leaders, and collaborators. Illinois is a uniquely powerful place to build, invest, research and receive care. World-class academic medicine, deep life sciences talent, an engaged investor community, patient protective policies, and life science entrepreneurship incubators and accelerators come together here. The best proof is our founders. I was thrilled to introduce Meghan Doyle, CEO and Co-Founder of Chicago based Partum Health and a UCM Ventures portfolio company. Partum Health brings doula support, mental healthcare, lactation consulting, pelvic floor therapy, and more so that Moms can find support when they need it. Meghan Doyle thank you for sharing your vision and impact so powerfully. The real value of a gathering like this is what happens next, and I’m excited that the impactful follow-up conversations have already begun. Here’s to turning yesterday’s connections into lasting collaborations and better healthcare.

  • Thank you Kerry Rupp for backing high impact founders like Meghan Doyle, CEO of Partum Health who are driving better care and creatively partnering with health systems like UChicago Medicine.

Yesterday, I attended Chicago Venture Summit, where this year's programming was focused on the Future of Health. Was proud to watch True Wealth Ventures portfolio company Partum Health's CEO Meghan Doyle present to the full audience, after being presented by fellow investor Hannah Levine at UChicago Medicine Ventures. Partum provides comprehensive, whole-person care for growing families - including doulas, lactation support, pelvic floor PT, nutrition and behavioral health - in IL, TX and MI. Much of the care is covered by insurance - including Medicaid, with growing commercial insurance coverage for doulas in IL. They're also now embedded in two health care systems, including University of Chicago Medicine and Rush. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gbxZWd2C

On July 16, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) released a new Committee Statement on partnering with doulas in clinical settings, and we couldn’t be more excited to see national guidance reinforce what we have believed from day one and are actively putting into practice. The statement calls on clinicians and health systems to: 🤝 Build respectful, collaborative care teams that include doulas 🏥 Integrate doulas into clinical workflows, not treat them as visitors 💬 Foster open communication between clinicians and doulas 📚 Educate patients about the role and benefits of doula care 📈 Expand access to evidence-based doula services At Partum Health, these principles aren’t aspirational - they are fundamental to our partnerships. With UChicago Medicine, we’ve intentionally built a model around many of the strategies highlighted in ACOG’s guidance. Together, we’ve integrated doula support as critical care in the hospital through: - Hospital onboarding, identification badges, and L&D orientation - Education for clinicians and doulas about one another's roles and scope of practice - Clear communication pathways, bedside collaboration, and post-case debriefs - Ongoing relationship-building between doulas, nurses, physicians, and hospital leadership - Continuous refinement of workflows to improve both the patient and provider experience Seeing these recommendations published by American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is exciting because it reinforces that successful doula integration isn’t just about bringing doulas into hospitals - it’s about intentionally building systems that enable doulas and clinicians to work together as one care team with one shared goal - a better experience for patients with fewer complications and better long term health. And while we know doulas play a critical role on the team, there is a need to ensure other specialists including physical therapists, behavioral health providers, lactation consultants, and dietitians have a place on the team as well. ACOG issued guidance on this back in 2018 and in this statement mentioned the important role doulas can play in ensuring patients access holistic care. We are grateful to our partners at UChicago Medicine and the other health systems we're working with for helping pioneer this model and to everyone who contributed to this important Committee Statement. As more health systems look to implement ACOG’s recommendations, we are excited to partner with organizations that want to build collaborative, evidence-based maternity care models to improve outcomes for families. A question about metastasis led to an unexpected discovery: human neutrophils could kill genetically diverse cancer cells without harming normal cells. At the Drug Discovery News Advances in Immuno-Oncology Symposium, Onchilles Senior Scientist Chang Cui, Ph.D., will share how following that biology led to the discovery of the ELANE pathway and the development of N17350, a therapeutic elastase now in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial. The presentation will examine a different approach to cancer treatment: directly killing tumor cells through an intrinsic cancer vulnerability, preserving immune cells, and using immunogenic cell death to generate a broader antitumor immune response. A few weeks ago, I presented the early results of Theta Neurotech's recently-completed retrospective study at the Epilepsy Foundation's annual Pipeline Conference The study was completed in collaboration with UChicago Medicine and was led by Principal Investigator, Naoum Issa In the study, we retrospectively assessed Theta Neurotech's seizure prediction algorithm using existing EEG recordings from 63 adult patients with diagnosed epilepsy, collected in UChicago Medicine's Epilepsy Monitoring Unit The results were promising, and represent evidence of the feasibility of Theta's seizure prediction algorithm, initially in the in-patient setting Thank you to the Epilepsy Foundation, especially Caitlin Grzeskowiak and Jacqueline French, for this oportunity!

Sharing a great OpEd from my colleague at University of Chicago Leonardo Bursztyn and my former colleague from the Obama Administration Cass Sunstein on how to actually get young people to use social media less. They quantify the challenges with Australia’s ban for minors to use social media and suggest three policy interventions that could actually make a difference (versus a blanket ban). Prof. Bursztyn has also launched an exciting startup called NOMO which applies these learnings and is working with school districts in Brazil currently (and has done pilots at UChicago). Harper Court Ventures is an investor and we’re excited to see the company thrive fulfilling a very important mission to reduce social media addiction and get our young people to enjoy live experiences instead! https://lnkd.in/gRjUPK2h

  • Theta Neurotech is an UCM Ventures portfolio company focused on developing a tool to predict epilepsy seizures in advance of occurring. This is considered a particularly meaningful step to supporting patients with epilepsy, which effects ~ 1% of the US population. It's terrific to see the founding team building bridges and growing their village to achieve this lofty goal. https://lnkd.in/gPVmzHez

I had a fantastic time presenting Theta Neurotech at MedTech Innovator's Radar Forum in LA this past week It was the densest concentration of high-quality medtech opinions that I have experienced to date, with great representation from the federal government (FDA, CMS, NIH), investors, engineers, manufacturing, and advocacy It will take a village to scale Theta's technology to the tens of millions of epilepsy patients in-need - it was great to broaden our network to the best of the best Special thanks to the MTI team (Nicole Black, PhD, Paul Grand) for having us!
