Now that cold weather has set in, we’ve rounded up the best duvet covers that are snug and soft for nights curled up in bed these days. But that doesn’t mean you’ll be wrapped up in stuffy fabrics that don’t speak to your bedroom’s design. Even Ariel Kayes, founder of juggernaut bedding brand Parachute, has filled her eclectic LA home with a range of duvet covers that span vibrant, textured linens to neutral, breathable percales.

Are you a minimalist looking for a structured, formal bed cover? Do you like trendy prints and patterns? Are you a luxury-loving thread-count snob? We’re here to tell you that there are plenty of brands on the market to fulfill each and every one of these needs. Brooklinen’s Classic Duvet Cover is our favorite since it comes in tons of prints, has a crisp and breathable feel (kind of like what we’ve experienced in high-end hotel suites), and is easy to care for.

Brooklinen Classic Duvet Cover

Specs

  • Closure Type: Duvet ties
  • Material: 100% long-staple cotton percale
  • Colors: 20
  • Sizes: Twin/Twin XL, Full/Queen, King/California King
  • Warranty: 365 days

About the Brand

I’m not sure what’s left to say about this bedding brand that hasn’t already been plastered across subway ads or Instagram feeds, but in short, Brooklinen is somewhat of a bedding celebrity. It has garnered cool-kid status by offering top-quality products using Oeko-Tex-certified products at reasonable prices.

The Classic Duvet Cover is made of percale, which can be compared to a crisp cotton button-down shirt. It’s soft and sophisticated in a matte, buttery finish that can be attributed to long-staple cotton fibers that are spun to make stronger but finer yarn.

Design Inspiration

Our editors are not only big fans of Brooklinen products for their breathable, sustainable materials but also for their versatile designs. With 20 earthy tones, we recommend this duvet cover for any type of bedroom style—but we’d lean towards purchasing for a coastal design thanks to the soothing colors and prints.

How to Style

Like Alpert, who has this duvet cover in her bedroom, we recommend styling it with textured linen sheets for a contrasting yet comfortable fabric combination and a throw blanket in complementary neutral and oceanic-inspired hues.

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • Made of Oeko-Tex-certified organic cotton
  • Available in 20 colorways and prints to dress a bed that can match any interior design style
  • The percale weave has a buttery, smooth texture that feels soothing to the touch

Downsides

  • Seasonal prints and colorways tend to sell out fast

Tester: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

My experience: The percale duvet cover has this smooth feel but at the same time it is remarkably light and crisp. Apparently, it’s all because of the high-quality single-ply yarns, which are made from strong long-staple cotton fibers that give it that buttery touch.

The bottom line: This is hands-down my favorite percale cotton duvet cover. The airiness factor of Brooklinen’s duvet cover is unmatched, especially if the duvet insert is equally lightweight. It has this parachute quality. It also feels cool to the touch, especially if I wake up at night and need to reposition my bedding.

Editor’s note: We recommend this classic duvet cover year-round because it has a refined, wrinkle-free look like luxury hotel bedding, it’s breathable, and it’s easy to layer with extras like throw blankets and thick comforters without overheating in winter.

Best Linen Duvet for a Lived-in Look

Quince European Linen Duvet Cover

Specs

  • Closure Type: Button
  • Material: 100% European Flax Linen
  • Colors: 35
  • Sizes: Twin, Full/Queen, King/California King
  • Warranty: 365 days

About the Brand

Quince’s entire deal is about making high-quality luxury products at an affordable price. They work only with factories that are both sustainable and pay a fair wage, which is something that many shoppers care enough about to pay a little extra for, but Quince cuts back on things like fancy packaging to keep costs down.

Design Inspiration

Quince is another AD favorite for its plethora of prints and solid colors. Welcome this duvet cover in your space—no matter its design style—for an expensive looking, lightweight addition to your bedscape that’s also budget friendly.

How to Style

Since linen makes a statement on its own with its lived-in look, we recommend styling this duvet cover with Quince’s classic European linen sheet set and a fluffy duvet insert in moody neutral hues (think: deep brown) for an exceptionally cozy sleep oasis. It’s also neutral enough that you can add some pattern sheeting for extra personality.

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • Includes the most colorway and pattern options in this list
  • Affordable price point
  • The texture softens with every wash

Downsides

  • Might experience minor snags

Tester: Nashia Baker, senior commerce editor

My experience: I’ve had this Quince linen duvet for about a year and it’s been a mainstay on my bed because its substantial but airy texture is like a breath of fresh air (even when I’m layering with throw blankets or quilts when it’s cold outside). Sometimes linen gets a bad reputation for its rough texture, but this best seller has been gentle against my skin and only gotten softer with more routine wear and care. It also has that relaxed look you know and love with linen materials. Steaming it knocks out wrinkles easily whenever I want a more put-together look in my bedroom, though.

I chose this Quince duvet since there were so many color options to choose from. I love moody colors year-round, but especially in fall and winter. The burgundy is true to the deep color I saw on the site, and it hasn’t faded after months of washes.

The bottom line: At this price point and with the most colors and prints available in this guide, I think this comforter cover can give you a great, budget-friendly way to dress a bed. The button closures also help keep a duvet insert or comforter in place. The care has been simple. I wash it with similar colors on a cold cycle and tumble dry on low and haven’t noticed any changes in its quality.

Coyuchi Cloud Brushed Organic Flannel Duvet Cover

Specs

  • Closure Type: Interior flap, ties and hidden coconut shell buttons
  • Material: 100% organic cotton is grown in Turkey and woven in Portugal
  • Colors: Seven
  • Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king/California king
  • Warranty: 180 nights

About the Brand

Coyuchi is our go-to for eco-friendly bedding. It’s even expanded into the mattress landscape to ensure every part of your bedroom has been thoughtfully considered with sustainable details. Bedding is certified organic and grown on farms free of fertilizers or pesticides.

Design Inspiration

Perfect for bedrooms in cooler weather, we think this neutral bed cover is a fit for any bedroom, especially with a leaning towards a soothing, cozy aesthetic.

How to Style

For a soothing bedscape that’s not boring, consider the pairing Baker chose: Matching the fawn herringbone neutral duvet with Coyuchi’s flannel sheet set in fawn ribbon stripe. It creates what she calls the “elevated version of plaid fall bedding.”

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • GOTS and Made Safe certified organic cotton
  • Incredibly soft texture from the brushed fabric
  • Durable, thick material that’s ideal for a cold-weather bedspread
  • Includes interior flap, ties, and hidden coconut shell buttons to secure duvet inserts

Downsides

  • The hues available lean more muted and might be less ideal for a maximalist’s bedroom

Tester: Nashia Baker, senior commerce editor

My experience: I am generally a cold sleeper, so when I spotted Coyuchi’s flannel duvet cover, I had a feeling it would be a match. My first impression of it was that it was incredibly soft. It gets its plush texture from the brushed fabric, which is completely organic. It’s just what I’ve needed for my bedspread for winter, and I’ve paired with the brand’s flannel bed sheets and a warm down comforter from Tuft & Needle. At first glance on the site, I didn’t realize how detailed the material would feel or look. It has thoughtful stitching and walnut-like buttons that complement the duvet beautifully, almost mirroring the look of a high-end sweater.

The bottom line: This is the best bedding for anyone who has an affinity for thicker materials to coat their beds. It’s held up well wash after wash without wear or tear. There’s also something so assuring in knowing that the duvet cover is backed with multiple clean certifications to help ensure my bed features accessories that are free of harsh chemicals for a good night’s rest.

Brooklinen Ribbed Matelasse Duvet Cover

Specs

  • Closure Type: Color matched zipper closure, comforter-securing duvet ties
  • Material: Front textured fabric that is 100% cotton ribbed matelasse, with a back percale fabric that is crisp, 200-thread-count 100% cotton
  • Colors: Seven
  • Sizes: Full/queen, king/California king
  • Warranty: 365 nights

About the Brand

As mentioned above in our top overall pick, Brooklinen is known as the “home of the internet’s favorite sheets,” so we find it to be a worthy destination for quality bedding—including this quilt-like duvet cover made with 100% cotton.

Design Inspiration

With a design that mirrors the appearance of a quilt, we think this duvet cover would dress a vintage-inspired space beautifully—like the bedding you’d find in a historic Victorian home.

How to Style

Alpert chose the plum colorway because of its sophisticated look that anchors her bedroom. She shares that the hue looks exceptionally well-paired with the deep caramel of the Boll & Branch Grand waffle blanket, as the color almost works like a moody neutral.

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides

  • Dual-sided design with a textured, quilt-like feel on the front from the ribbed matelasse and a crisp feel on the back from the percale material
  • Offers a subtle weight to dress a bed for cozy, cooler weather
  • Gives a bedspread a more cushioned feel that’s pairs well with other layers like a fur throw blanket

Downsides

  • Some customers note that the fabric might be sensitive to snagging, especially if you have pets

Tester: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

My experience: The Brooklinen website describes it as “breezy” but I would say that it is more substantial, even a bit like a weighted blanket. The ribbed side is certainly quilt-like, which is not surprising because each ribbon that runs through the duvet cover is padded ever so slightly. This is juxtaposed against the perfectly crisp signature Brooklinen percale.

The two-sided design is genius because it keeps the duvet cover from feeling too heavy. This is especially key for anyone who sleeps without a flat sheet. You’ll feel like you’re getting into freshly changed linens night after night. On the flip side, the ribbed texture elevates the duvet cover, not only in how it looks but it gives your bedding a slightly cushy sensation.

The bottom line: When I sleep with it on, it feels as if I am very secure—no one will dare wake me up. It’s certainly not as heavy as an actual weighted blanket, but it certainly has substance and structure.

Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Duvet Set

Specs

  • Closure Type: Four interior corner ties
  • Material: 100% organic cotton
  • Colors: 23
  • Sizes: Twin/Twin XL, Full/Queen, King/California King
  • Warranty: 30 days

About the Brand

Boll & Branch is one of AD’s favorite brands when it comes to bedding. With super soft sheets and other products made from 100% organic cotton, they have a heavy focus on sustainability and directly sourcing raw materials. The duvet cover follows suit, with long-staple cotton making for a durable piece of bedding that I’ve found is breathable enough for both hot and cold nights.

Design Inspiration

This organic cotton duvet set is a surefire way to please anyone with a traditional bedroom. It boasts a tried-and-true material that gets softer with every wash, and designs—including subtle botanical prints—are a must for anyone with classic taste.

How to Style

Bring the outdoors in with your styling by pairing one of Boll & Branch’s botanical prints with a textured linen sheet set.

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides:

  • Doesn’t experience any wear after countless washes
  • Available in a range of sizes
  • Made from sustainably sourced materials in dozens of colors and prints

Downsides:

  • Pricier than some other duvets on this list

Tester: Lauren Arzbaecher, commerce producer

My experience: In contrast to cheaper duvets, I could really feel the difference in fabric quality from the first sleep with this duvet cover. The cotton is very smooth, and I maintained a comfortable temperature throughout the night even when bundled up underneath all my bedding. With an easy access zipper, it was much simpler to put this cover on and off my Company Store down insert than other button-closure covers I’ve tried. One small thing to note: Boll & Branch only offers combination sizing (Twin/Twin XL, Full/Queen, King/California King) so if you have a bed on the smaller side of those pairings like I do with a full mattress, the corners of the duvet will hang fairly close to the floor.

The bottom line: I’m a certified snuggler when it comes to bedding—the more layers the better! I tend to run cold, but piling on the layers while not overheating can be tricky. The key, I’ve found, is breathable materials. High-quality cotton is always a great go-to, particularly for duvet covers, where I want to complement the cuddly qualities of my comforter rather than overwhelming it.

While it’s a bit of a splurge, Boll & Branch’s quality is worth the extra investment. For something I sleep underneath every night, this duvet has held up exceptionally well even after several washes. Their solid color range has a lovely mix of earthy hues, and the brand has been releasing more and more patterns, from stripes to florals.

Cozy Earth Bamboo Duvet Cover

Specs

  • Closure Type: Concealed zipper and interior snap closures
  • Material: 100% viscose derived from bamboo
  • Colors: Nine (not including seasonal colors and prints on the Cozy Earth site)
  • Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king
  • Warranty: 10 years

About the Brand

From pajamas to sheets, Cozy Earth is a favorite of ours—and Oprah thanks to frequent appearances in her Favorite Things lists—for cooling bedding made of bamboo fabric. Its offerings also ring in at a budget-friendly price (especially with the brand’s frequent sales).

Design Inspiration

Many of the colors in Cozy Earth’s collection are grounded in the earth (to be expected). With this in mind, we suggest this duvet cover in a minimalist, bohemian, or coastal bedroom.

How to Style

The delicate nature of the bedding (both in texture and color) makes it a striking contrast against crisp, patterned accents, like a percale floral sheet set.

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides:

  • Includes the most closures on our list
  • Delicate yet sturdy fabric
  • Has a moisture-wicking, smooth texture without feeling slippery

Downsides:

  • Seasonal colors and prints are only available on the Cozy Earth site

Tester: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

My experience: The fabric is so delicate and dreamy that it reminds me of flower petals. Since I chose the peony colorway, it definitely fits the romantic profile. The bamboo is incredibly light to the touch and feels silky, but not in a slippery way. I pair it with the bamboo viscose comforter with standard fill and the combination works great because the comforter has some weight and the duvet cover does not mess with it in any way. Because of the snap closure, everything stays in place so you’d think it’s just one piece.

I cannot say enough about the snap closure. My biggest pet-peeve is when the comforter escapes from the duvet cover enclosures and ends up as a wadded mess that distorts the entire bedding set up. Cozy Earth has 12(!) points of contact between the comforter and the cover, so there is no way anything is going to get loose, especially because these are snapped on, and not tied, like many other duvet covers.

The zip closure is another feature that I love—it is virtually invisible, so the entire duvet cover is seamless on your bed. This is the only duvet cover my husband won’t complain about.

The bottom line: This duvet cover is a trifecta of perks: It looks good, feels good, and won’t slip off the comforter. But if I had to pick one, I’d say that I love the delicate pink hue and the equally delicate feel of the cover. Just looking at my bed makes me want to crawl into it.

Piglet in Bed Gingham Linen Duvet Cover

Specs

  • Closure Type: Interior ties
  • Material: Oeko-Tex-certified 100% linen made from 100% European flax
  • Colors: 28
  • Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/California king
  • Warranty: 30 days

About the Brand

Piglet in Bed is a UK-based brand focused on linen and linen-cotton blend bedding and rustic designs in earthy hues for gingham prints, stripes and florals. Piglet also offers homeware.

Design Inspiration

This is a pick for farmhouse or rustic design enthusiasts with its cottagecore-inspired style.

How to Style

We recommend going full cottagecore by opting for a duvet cover in gingham prints and pairing it with a matching sheet set.

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides:

  • The thermoregulating design is made to keep sleepers cool in the summer and warm in the fall and winter
  • Great for a rustic bedroom
  • Available in a linen and linen blend

Downsides:

  • Shorter warranty window

Tester: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

My experience: This duvet is airy and lived-in. It’s soft, but not so soft that you feel like you have baby bedding. You can sense the texture of the linen, but not the slubs (tiny bumps). I am a bit nuts about the corozo buttons that fasten in place. I usually tuck the duvet cover buttons out of sight, but these add charm and I have no intention of hiding them from the world.

I paired the duvet cover with Buffy Air Cooling quilt so the combo ended up being extra, well, airy. It’s kind of like a light embrace, and I never felt the need to kick off my cover.

The bottom line: The weave is impeccable. I can see the color variations in the gingham print, which is this lovely transition between the mossy green to the lower gradient of the same shade. You can see the craftsmanship in detail. I am so big on textures, and this duvet cover completely wakes up the entire bed. I also appreciate that the ties to secure the duvet are the same color as the exterior. It’s a small touch, but the kind of detail that goes into premium bedding.

Best White Duvet Cover for Minimalists

Cozy Earth Linen Duvet Cover

Specs

  • Closure Type: Interior snap closure and hidden zip closure
  • Material: 100% Belgian Flax linen
  • Colors: Two
  • Sizes: Twin, Full/Queen, King
  • Warranty: 10 years

About the Brand

Cozy Earth is the very cooling result of one couple’s search for smarter bedding solutions to their clashing temperature preferences. In addition to their line of very breathable, moisture-wicking sheets that Oprah described in her 2018 “Favorite Things” list as the “softest bedding ever,” the brand has expanded into wearables and materials like linen. If you’re on the fence, the brand allows returns and exchanges within 100 days, plus an additional 10-year warranty against defects.

Design Inspiration

While its breathable, cooling fabric makes it great for a coastal bedroom, we also love its muted colors for minimalists or more traditional bedrooms. Choose from mist or a natural white option to seamlessly blend in with the rest of your bedroom decor.

How to Style

To match the coastal aesthetic, we recommend pairing this breezy duvet with whimsical details, such as scalloped bedding. Try out a bright quilt in sky blue or white colors for an added layer.

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides:

  • The linen material feels smooth to the touch
  • It resists bunching and shifting thanks to the snap closure and zipper to keep comforters in place
  • Feels breathable and comfy every night, even with a thick cotton comforter inside

Downsides:

  • Some sizes go in and out of stock frequently, so you’ll need to act fast when shopping

Tester: Nashia Baker, senior commerce editor

My experience: I can’t speak for other cold sleepers out there, but I tend to gravitate towards materials that feel cozy and textured (like linen) instead of something sleek and silky unless it’s the summer or if I have my heat at a high temp in my apartment. I ultimately always reach for bedding that’s breathable and good quality (aka: it’s free of harmful substances) so I know I can rest easy each night.

This duvet has been dreamy (no pun intended). I’ve known about Cozy Earth for years because of the brand’s bamboo bedding that pretty much all of my coworkers love, and I’m definitely in that pool of people too. But I was less familiar with the linen collection. My colleague Audrey first tested the Cozy Earth linen bamboo collection that was 30% linen and 70% bamboo viscose hybrid, which she called “the perfect combination of airy, cooling, and not too weight-y.”

When I heard about a new launch of a 100% Belgian flax linen duvet cover, I knew I had to try it and see if it lived up to the hype of the first linen iteration. I’ll say it definitely meets the qualities Audrey mentioned, and then some. After countless nights under the duvet, I noticed how featherweight and naturally airy it feels (so I never overheat). It’s also really durable. I have an embroidered blanket (not a duvet cover with ties) that I use the most on my bed, so I like a comforter cover to be thick enough so the design doesn’t peek through. Even though it’s linen, which can have a natural wrinkle, this material is pretty smooth and almost resembles the feel of a sateen duvet cover. I also really appreciate that the brand kept the zipper closure like the previous linen-bamboo cover so it's easy to pull and duvet insert in and out. Added bonus: This one also comes with a snap closure to keep an insert from shifting around.

The bottom line: This new duvet cover is a great option for minimalists out there. The color selection is kept to a minimum (white and mist), but I like the white hue to keep my bedroom looking clean and elevated. It’s also a nice option for people who have big comforters or duvet inserts, so you won’t have to worry about squeezing a blanket inside. It’s made of organic materials too, and it has a laid-back look and soft texture that’s only felt more velvety with time.

Softest Duvet Cover This Season

Garnet Hill Signature Pear Garden Flannel Duvet Cover

Specs

  • Closure Type: Hidden button closure and corner ties
  • Material: 100% cotton
  • Colors: One
  • Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king/California king
  • Warranty: 90-day return for unused items and one-year warranty for defective items

About the Brand

Garnet Hill was founded in New Hampshire in the mid-1970s by Pegge and Grant Dowse who built the brand on a commitment to sustainable materials, thoughtful craftsmanship, and responsible sourcing with products like organic cotton and flannel bedding. The bedding blends traditional styles with a modern touch to fit in a range of bedrooms.

Design Inspiration

Our tester says the Pear Garden print is completely unexpected. “As much as I love florals, stripes, and gingham, a girl needs a break…and these charming pears are just the right motif,” Alpert shares. “They signal a cottagecore moment without going over the top. Every time I glimpse the cheery yellow fruit, I crack a little smile. Plus, the colorway of bold yellow, sage green, brown, and cream are easy to coordinate with the rest of my bedding collection.”

How to Style

Because the pear motifs are the statement, we think you can go with more subtle sheets like a white set with embroidered trim. If you’re more of a maximalist, you can lean into the pattern play with a gingham sheet set in a complementary muted tone like brown and extra layers like a faux fur blanket if you’re cozying up for winter.

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides:

  • Made of an ultra-soft, weighty six-ounce flannel material, most ideal for cold sleepers or chilly seasons
  • Comes in a unique pear print that can match a lot of bedroom styles
  • Resistant to shedding and pilling

Downsides:

  • Due to the nature of the thicker flannel composition, our tester says the duvet cover takes quite a while to dry (about a couple of cycles in the dryer).

Tester: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

My experience: This duvet cover is synonymous with cozy. I’ve been sleeping exceptionally well under a mound of this cover. It’s as if a layer of leaves, or in this case pears, is surrounding me during winter hibernation. That’s in part because this specific flannel is woven to have a substantial six-ounce weight, giving it a reassuring weight. Hitting snooze has become a habit I don’t even bother fighting. The plush feel of the cover also makes me think that I’ve just scored an upgrade to a royal suite.

The bottom line: The duvet cover feels decadent. If bedding could be dessert then this Garnet Hill duvet cover is it—especially when I pair it with the fluffy Ostermoor down duvet insert. Climbing into bed is like climbing under a layer of meringue. This duvet cover is also a bit snugger than a typical King, so the duvet feels especially lofty.

I’ve only had this for about a month and other than the slightly brushed texture, I have not noticed any pilling, and it seems to hold up better than some of the flannel sheets I am testing, though that could be because it is a duvet cover, not a sheet set that comes into direct contact with my PJs.

Luxome Duvet Cover

Specs

  • Closure Type: Hidden button closure
  • Material: 100% Viscose from Bamboo sateen weave
  • Colors: White, terra-cotta, stone, charcoal, ocean
  • Sizes: Full/Queen, King/Cal King
  • Warranty: 30-day return policy

About the Brand

Luxome is a newer brand to the AD Shopping team, but it’s already impressed several team members for its cooling sheets made of viscose from bamboo. The material mirrors silk, at a lower price point, and comes in moody hues that are great for a maximalist bedroom.

Design Inspiration

We liken this duvet cover to vintage-era glam design because of its sumptuous colorways and sleek hand feel.

How to Style

Mix and match like Alpert in her bedroom with a set of striped sheets for a laid-back look.

Upsides & Downsides

Upsides:

  • Made with patented 37.5 Technology to keep the bedding cool in any season for hot sleepers
  • The duvet cover has a silky smooth feel at lower price point
  • Designed with natural bamboo extracts for a soft and refreshing texture
  • Resistant to pilling

Downsides:

  • The closure buttons are on the smaller side and might be tricky to maneuver

Tester: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

My experience: Luxome says it is made with the 37.5 Technology, which is said to adapt to the body temperature and wick away moisture, helping you cool down. I am not typically a hot sleeper, but when I couldn’t fall back asleep after waking up in the middle of the night, I appreciated the cool feel of the duvet cover as I tried to get comfortable. It was almost like a restart button.

It’s certainly cooling. My husband is the biggest fan—he often notes that I have too many layers or that the bedding is too hot. I like it for its sleek texture that is quite soothing when I pull up the cover closer to me. The hidden button closure is neat and doesn’t distract from the overall look. I chose the “ocean” color for this bedding and love the saturated hue that reads sophisticated, but not pretentious.

The bottom line: This bedding is silky sleek. It’s very smooth, but I can feel a bit of micro grip on the surface to keep the duvet cover from slipping and sliding all over the place. It’s cool to the touch, so if I start to feel hot, I just move it around and it’s a welcome relief.

What to Look for in the Best Duvet Covers

A duvet cover is more than just a bed cover. This eye-catching textile has a large footprint in any bedroom and can instantly give your space a refresh—whether with unique colors and prints or something more modest— especially if you want to disguise an old duvet insert. With this in mind, we tapped AD PRO Directory designers to weigh in on what to look for in a duvet cover to elevate your bedroom.

Material: When it comes to duvet covers, everyone has their own personal preferences. For Nicole R. Fisher, CEO and founder of Nicole Fisher Interiors, it's linen: “They’re effortless, lightweight, and airy. I think the simplicity of the linen transcends different styles and spaces,” she says. Fisher notes that the feel is a big factor when selecting a duvet cover.

Carmen René Smith, founder and principal designer of Aquilo Interiors, says that it also needs to feel soft to the touch, breathable, and cozy. “What’s the point of a beautiful duvet if you don’t want to snuggle into it?” she says. “Texture is key too—whether it’s silky, crisp, or nubby, it should add depth to the space.”

Comfort: All of the interior designers we spoke to for this story point to natural fibers, not only because of their quality but also their airflow and breathability. Shelbie Cox of Shelbie Cox Studio recommends natural fibers like organic cotton and linen and notes that polyester and other synthetic fibers are best to avoid since they tend to trap heat.

Design: With so many patterns and colors to choose from, it’s important to keep your bedroom’s design style in mind. If you like more of a minimalist bedroom, Cox suggests a fine stripe pattern (like Quince’s European Linen Duvet Cover) or a monochromatic, muted color palette (see the Cozy Earth Bamboo Duvet Cover) for your duvet cover set.

If you want to go bold for your bedroom, there are options aplenty. “We’re maximalists, so we say bump up the color and pattern no matter what your signature style is!” says Smith, adding that it’s important to still maintain balance. “If you have bold wallpaper, pull a color from it and go for a solid, textured duvet—like a rich velvet for drama or a soft linen for a more relaxed vibe. If you’re mixing patterns, think about scale—a bold, oversized print pairs best with a smaller, more delicate duvet pattern to give the eye a place to rest.”

If you don’t want to commit to one style just yet, rest assured that having a few duvets in rotation can help you keep your bedroom design fresh. “I tend to go simple on bedding and let the accessories be the pops of pattern and color that’s easily swapped out,” adds Fisher.

Maintenance: While these are great design accessories for a bedroom, they also need to be practical. Ashley Ross, founder and principal designer of Muse Noire Interiors recommends keeping these questions in mind when shopping: How does it fasten (zipper, tie up, or buttons)? Does it fit within your washer and dryer? This will help you know how to use it and how to care for it. She’s also big into searching the web to see how easily people find the duvet cover is—or is not—to take off.

In short, you don’t necessarily need a duvet cover, as it depends on how you like to dress your bed. However, in our opinion, it’s a great bed accessory. A duvet cover not only protects your duvet insert but it also allows you to switch up your bedscape with ease (instead of swapping comforters when you want a new look). That said, pay attention to the care instructions for your insert because some do not recommend washing or dry cleaning.
