Model tested: Thuma Signature Modular Sofa and Thuma Signature Modular Sofa (in ivory)
The Details: Thuma is best known for their beloved, Japanese joinery-style bed frame, so I was excited to see if their first line of living room seating deserved the same hype. The Modular Sofa I tested, which launched in 2025, mirrors the same minimal, but considered look of the brand’s other furnishings—with deep seats, rounded cushions, and a textured weave that come together in one structured silhouette. It’s a noticeable departure from the bulky, overstuffed style of other sectionals. Instead, it feels streamlined and modern, with modular pieces that clip together in a seamless way that echoes the bed frame’s design ethos.
My configuration was listed as ready to ship and arrived within a couple weeks. If you want something that looks and feels elevated, can mold itself into different layouts, and doesn’t require a long wait, this sofa hits the right sweet spot.
Before Delivery
What’s the story behind the brand?
Thuma launched in 2016 with the idea that “simplicity is the ultimate luxury, details matter, and good design is good hospitality.” Nearly a decade later, that philosophy is still deeply apparent in their pieces. The Signature Modular Sofa, part of Thuma’s Living Room Collection that launched in August last year, reflects the same intentional, high-quality design.
Price: How much does it cost? Are there payment plans available?
My configuration—which includes one armless seat, two corner seats (left and right arm), and a storage ottoman in Ivory—came to $4,980 before tax. Thuma offers free shipping and multiple payment options, including Shop Pay, Afterpay, Affirm, and Klarna, allowing you to split the cost into manageable installments.
What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any?
The Signature Modular Sofa comes in four nature-inspired fabrics: Ivory (light cream), Natural (beige), Mocha (mid-brown), and Carbon (dark charcoal). Each has a textured, slightly rough weave pattern. I went with Ivory to brighten up my office /living room.
What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery?
The sofa isn’t made to order but is produced in small runs. Lead times vary by fabric and stock. Items listed as “ready to ship” typically leave the warehouse in three to five business days, while others may take longer. Once shipped, delivery is free within the contiguous US and usually arrives in 5 to 10 business days.
Delivery & Assembly
What was the delivery process like?
Delivery was quick and seamless. Four large boxes were brought directly into my apartment, each securely packed in double-layered cardboard. Honestly, breaking down the packaging took longer than putting the sofa together.
What was the assembly process like? How long did it take and how many people?
The assembly was simple. The sturdy iron Thuma clips made connecting each section easy and secure. Unboxing and setup took about 45 minutes with help from my partner.
After Delivery
What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?
The three-seater I own measures 121"W x 43"D x 32.25"H, while the ottoman measures 35"W x 43"D x 18"H. When clipped to create an L-shape, the total depth extends to about 78". In my 16-by-15-foot room, it fits comfortably with ample space for end tables, a coffee table, and a desk without feeling crowded.
Sit Test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?
It’s supportive yet firm, with plenty of room to stretch out. I’m six foot five and can sprawl out comfortably, and there’s still space for my five-foot-nine partner. The Thuma clips secure each section tightly, so it feels like one solid piece with no shifting or slipping apart.
Is the sectional suitable for particular decor styles and if so, which?
Its clean lines and neutral palette fit effortlessly into modern, midcentury, Scandi, or traditional spaces. In my home, it acts as a neutral anchor that complements warm wood tones and vintage details without overpowering the room.
Is it durable/practical in a modern home?
The build of the couch feels solid and durable. The clips keep everything tightly connected, and the fabric shows no signs of wear. I will say that the textured weave fabric can occasionally snag on small metal objects like keys or jewelry, which may pull up a thread, but it’s easy to smooth back into place without noticeable damage. I’d strongly suggest applying a fabric protector like ProtectMe for added stain resistance. This was a must for me since I chose the Ivory color, which could be risky in a spill situation. My cat loves lounging on it, and so far it has held up perfectly with no scratches, snags, or noticeable wear from daily use.
Is the couch kid and/or dog friendly?
I don’t have kids or a dog, but based on the build and fabric, I’d say it’s well suited and safe for both. There are no hard edges, and the seat height is about a foot and a half, so even if a pet took a tumble, the drop wouldn’t be too steep.
What are the care and cleaning instructions? Do you think stains could be easily removed?
The fabric feels durable and easy to maintain with regular care, though like most woven materials, it can stain if spills aren’t treated quickly. I recommend using a gentle fabric brush or a vacuum with a soft attachment for routine cleaning. Spills should be blotted right away with a clean, dry cloth instead of rubbed.
Thuma also thankfully covers the internal wood frame with a lifetime warranty in case of breakage or material defects under normal use, though your average stain or wear and tear isn’t included.
Do the photos do this product justice? Was there anything you were surprised to see IRL?
The photos online are very true to life in both color and design. The fabric has a structured feel and slightly coarse texture, so anyone expecting an ultra-soft couch might find it a bit firm and rough to the touch. It’s also a little deeper than it appears online, which I actually prefer since it’s great for lounging and fully stretching out.
