Upsides

  • Temperature-regulating design

Downsides

Slightly more expensive than the original version of the linen sheets

Editor’s Note: Several of our editors have tested Brooklinen’s linen sheets over the years, and after testing and reviewing the brand’s latest washed linen core sheet set that launched in 2025, we confirm that this material feels durable and even softer after every wash.

Reviewer: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

What attracted you to these sheets? Brooklinen linen is definitely lightweight. If you hold it up, you can see through it. I have the Abyss color, which is more of a navy hue, and pairs really well with the Luxe Sateen Duvet Cover in Oyster. Also, I love the pocket on the pillowcase cover that keeps my pillow from slipping out or showing. This is especially useful with my dark sheet color because seeing the white pillow peeking out would be really annoying.

What’s it like sleeping on them? I was comfortable and slept really well. They are super soft, like a hug. It’s linen, so there is natural texturality because of slubs (teeny bumps) in the weave, but I think this adds to the softness. Think of your favorite linen shirt, but in the form of a sheet.

The bedding drapes nicely and has a smooth feel, even for linen bedding. It’s Oeko-Tex-certified, which is a nice perk and leans into the whole idea of natural bedding. I didn’t find it too stuffy, and even my husband, who is a hot sleeper, didn’t complain about it.

Did they live up to your expectations? Yes, I have no changes. I have had these for a few months since the brand launched this new-and-improved linen set and these are what I would expect quality linen sheets to be. I would flag that someone who is a sensitive sleeper and is used to sateen sheets might need to get used to the texture.

Would you recommend these to a friend? Yes! These were very comfortable and I think a really good pick for spring and fall months in particular.

Sateen With a Subtle Sheen

  • Rachel Fletcher

Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Sheet Set

Specs

  • Thread count: 300
  • Material: Organic long-staple cotton
  • Colors available: White, natural, dune, mist, pewter, stone, sky, shore, mineral
  • Warranty information: Boll & Branch’s items are returnable within 30 days of delivery. Refunds will exclude any shipping and handling that may have been charged to buyers.
  • Washing instructions: Machine wash in cold water with similar colors on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on medium heat. To avoid wrinkles, shake the sheets out between washing and drying and make sure the dryer isn’t overloaded so there’s room for the sheets to move around. The sheets are not preshrunk, so you may notice a tiny bit of shrinkage after a few washes.

Upsides

  • King size has a standard pillowcase option
  • Many colorway options in solids and prints
  • Features a top-stitched elastic band on the fitted sheet

Downsides

The neutral tones available might be less of a fit for a maximalist bedroom

Reviewer: Rachel Fletcher, shopping director

What attracted you to these sheets? I was sold on the fact that Boll & Branch makes organic and fair trade sheets—and I love a sateen weave. Plus, the brand markets these as their best-selling set around, so I wanted to see what the hype was about.

What’s it like sleeping on them? Boll & Branch claims that these cotton sateen sheets are buttery soft, and I definitely agree. That extra-soft feel paired with the lovely, cooling properties make them feel like the luxury sheets that they are. To be very candid, I don’t remember when I got these sheets because they’ve been in my life for several years—I believe since 2021.

Did they live up to your expectations? These are in a constant rotation of four to five sets of sheets (what can I say, I’m a design editor) so they get washed at least once a month. Despite some very slight color fading, they’re as strong and now even softer than when I first got them.

Would you recommend these to a friend? Yes!

The Budget Pick

Quince Signature Giza Cotton Sateen Sheet Set

Specs

  • Thread count: 700
  • Material: 100% Giza sateen cotton
  • Colors available: Mineral, light grey, ivory, white, dried sage, sand, espresso, stone, white/mineral, white/sand, white/dried sage
  • Warranty information: Free returns for 365 days.
  • Washing instructions: Machine wash with warm water separately before first use. Wash with like colors. Do not bleach or soak. Tumble dry low. Warm iron if needed. Do not dry clean.

Upsides

  • STANDARD 100 by Oeko-Tex certified
  • Deep pockets (fits mattresses up to 16 inches tall)
  • Comes with or without a flat sheet
  • Lightweight yet incredibly soft and durable

Downsides

Less ideal for cold sleepers

Reviewer: Rachel Wallace, senior entertainment editor

What attracted you to these sheets? The sheets feel cool and smooth, but still buttery soft and not at all plasticky, the way (in my opinion) some sateen sheets can.

What’s it like sleeping on them? I can’t reiterate how soft to the touch this bedding is. I thought sateen would mean that it would have a slick sort of sheen to it, but it really feels like a natural fiber. I was using linen sheets for a while, and I know many people love them, and that they soften up over time, but these cotton sheets have been soft from the start—never rough at all. They also don’t get too wrinkly.

Did they live up to your expectations? The sheets are available in a variety of nice colorways, including a sage green and grayish blue. Mine are ivory, which I love because they are neutral but more interesting than a stark white. They look very rich and luxurious. The pillowcases also have a nice subtle stitching on them that adds a little personality. The fitted sheet is easy to get on and off the bed.

Would you recommend these to a friend? I would. I haven’t noticed any wear and tear even though I have washed it multiple times now. However, this bedding might not be great for someone who is always cold or who is looking for sheets that will add extra warmth to their bedding setup.

A Crisp Percale Set

  • Rachel Fletcher

Parachute Percale Sheet Set

Specs

  • Thread count: N/A
  • Material: Organic cotton
  • Colors available: 13
  • Warranty information: Parachute’s bedding is protected under a one-year warranty from the date of purchase. The brand will replace their sheets with the same or a similar product or provide a refund at their discretion. Their warranty does not cover change in comfort preferences, products not cleaned in accordance with care label instructions, or damaged goods resulting from abuse or improper care or normal wear and tear.
  • Washing instructions: Machine-wash on a delicate cycle set on warm/cold water. Use mild laundry detergent and let the detergent dissolve in the water before loading your sheets. Tumble or air-dry.

Upsides

  • Snug fit on the bed
  • Breathable
  • Slightly structured feel

Downsides

Cotton sheet sets can lack the silky feel of other high-end materials

Reviewer: Rachel Fletcher, shopping director

What attracted you to these sheets? I love the Parachute brand and when they said they were releasing a line of organic bedding a few years back, I jumped at the chance to give them a try. They’re also made in Portugal, which is known for producing excellent linens, and the factory that Parachute works with has been family-owned for generations.

What’s it like sleeping on them? It’s definitely not the same silky smooth experience that you might get from a sateen weave, but it feels lovely nonetheless; it’s more of a grown-up and tucked-in vibe (which is a lot to say about a set of bedding).

Did they live up to your expectations? These are clean and crisp, so there’s no stretchy action like you might expect with sheets of a lesser quality. I’ve had this sheet since 2022, it’s an OG from back when Parachute launched their organic product offering, which is no longer available. It has been washed probably hundreds of times since I got it and it’s still going strong. I’ve noticed some slight wear over the years but nothing that would prompt me to take the sheets out of my linen closet.

Would you recommend these sheets to a friend? I would. I try a lot of bedding in this line of work and, the more I do, the more I appreciate ethical and organic production (who wants to think about the chemicals they’re breathing in while they sleep?) even if the price tag is a little bit higher.

Editor’s Note: The Organic Fitted Sheets we originally tested are no longer in stock, but this percale set is the best alternative.

Sweater-Inspired Sheets

Brooklinen Heathered Cashmere Core Sheet Set

Specs

  • Thread count: N/A
  • Material: 95% cotton and 5% Himalayan cashmere
  • Colors available: Cream, fog, charcoal, driftwood, storm
  • Warranty information: Returns are available for 365 days. All returns are subject to a $9.95 return fee deducted from your refund amount.
  • Washing instructions: Machine wash cold separately with like colors. Do not bleach. Tumble dry low, remove promptly. Low iron if needed.

Upsides

  • Lightweight alternative to a flannel sheet set
  • Soft, blanket-like texture
  • Easy care instructions

Downsides

Only available in solid colors

Reviewer: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

What attracted you to these sheets? True to its name, the Brooklinen Heathered Cashmere bedding is what quiet luxury is all about. Like a posh sweater, the blend of cotton and Himalayan cashmere is like the threads have been whipped into a fluffy weave that feels as airy as a balloon. Even though it is light, the bedding feels incredibly soft and substantial.

What’s it like sleeping on them? While I love flannel bedding in the winter, sometimes it can be a bit much, especially when paired with my thick down duvet. This Brooklinen cashmere blend offers softness and warmth, but in a much, much lighter fabric. If you hold it up to the light, the bedding is almost transparent. Cleveland temps have been in single digits for weeks and I don’t even mind because my bed is a cocoon.

Did they live up to your expectations? The heathered detail gives the bedding that extra dimension. You can barely detect the thread variation, but it is there and gives my creme sheets that je ne sais quoi. The weave falls in a diagonal pattern whose delicate lines are only accentuated by the brushed texture.

The bedding is adept at keeping me warm on cold nights, but it never feels suffocating, even under a down duvet. I have no problem falling asleep when these are on my bed, and I sleep soundly through the night. Even my husband, who thinks flannel sheets are too hot, is a fan of these.

Would you recommend these to a friend? Yes, it’s the simple pleasures like this bedding that make surviving the polar vortex tolerable. I do love the heathered variation, but as someone who is big on patterned sheets, I wouldn’t mind if these also came in a pinstripe.

A Silky Set

  • Lauren Arzbaecher

Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set

Specs

  • Thread Count: N/A
  • Material: 100% premium viscose from bamboo fabric
  • Colors available: Light gray, white, oat, driftwood, charcoal, navy, olive, sage, harbor mist, clay, stone, walnut, pacific blue, creme, and shore
  • Warranty information: Cozy Earth’s bedding and bath products include a 10-year warranty against pilling, abnormal rips and tears, and defects. Their warranty does not include normal wear and tear or discoloration. (We Made Too Much items, discontinued products, and reshipped orders are excluded from warranty claims.)
  • Washing instructions: Cozy Earth advises to machine wash cold without fabric softeners or bleach and to tumble dry. They also recommend using a gentle detergent. Personally, I just put mine in the washer and dryer and ran them like I normally would and it was totally fine.

Upsides

  • Has a cozy feel like classic cotton sheets
  • Lustrous fabric resembles silk
  • Available in several neutral and patterned colorways each season

Downsides

Errs on the side of being a bit too big

Reviewer: Megan Wahn, contributor

What attracted you to these sheets? As the name implies, Cozy Earth has a reputation for making bedding that feels like a warm hug. I was first introduced to the brand by way of their pajamas—which are a nightly staple for me in winter. Something about how the Cozy Earth sheets effortlessly unravelled as I took them out of their wrapping made me think, Hmmm, maybe I should give these a shot?

How do they fit your bed? The fitted sheet is snug enough, but I have noticed the top sheet runs a little large and loose and requires some tucking between my mattress and my bed frame to ensure nothing drags on the floor. The slightly larger size applies to the pillowcases too. There’s a section of extra fabric that drapes off my pillows.

What’s it like sleeping on them? I honestly thought these were silk when I first laid on them. That’s how smooth they feel. Combined with Cozy Earth’s long-sleeve pajamas, I truly feel like I’m Eloise at The Plaza whenever I slip in between these sheets. I tested them primarily in the winter and they kept me warm, though something about their smoothness makes me think the summer night sweats won’t stand a chance.

Did they live up to your expectations? Compared to the Big Blanket Co. sheets that are my regular mainstays, these Cozy Earth bamboo sheets have set a whole new bar. They’re silky smooth but maintain a comfy coziness distinct to cotton.

Would you recommend these to a friend? These are definitely a bit of a splurge that some might balk at. That said, if you’re moving or just generally looking to graduate from the average department store set, Cozy Earth’s a brand to know. With some sheets, it’s hard to feel a noticeable difference in material quality but that’s not the case with these bamboo sheets.

For Personality-Driven Patterns

Piglet in Bed Mix-and-Match Linen Bundle

Specs

  • Thread Count: N/A
  • Material: 55% European flax and 45% long staple cotton
  • Colors available: 38 colors and patterns
  • Warranty information: 90-day return policy.
  • Washing instructions: Machine wash at 40°C with similar colors, then air dry or tumble dry on a low setting. Iron on low for a smooth look or embrace the natural crumpled texture. Avoid using fabric softener and do not bleach.

Upsides

  • Dozens of colors and prints to design a bedspread that fits your style
  • The linen blend is a slightly more elevated version of standard cotton
  • Lighter weight than standard linen for more breathability

Downsides

Might experience light pilling

Reviewer: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

What attracted you to these sheets? I love the dual-tone of the sage on the gingham pattern, which gives it more depth. My favorite part is that these come in mix-and-match so you can pick and choose from more than 20 colorways. The sage green is darling when paired with pinks (like my Brooklinen Airweave quilt). But I also have my eye on honey gingham and berry gingham, both of which would play nice with the posy bud print. This way my bedding routine is never going to be boring.

What’s it like sleeping on them? Bliss is one way to describe sleeping in the sheets. The weight of these is light, but still drapes nicely. I don’t love overly thin sheets, and these are just right. I woke up very happy.

Honestly, it is hard to compare the linen-blend to the linen because they feel very similar. But I suppose these linen-blend feel a bit more brushed while the linen feels slightly more textured. Think of the linen-blend as cotton sheets that have seen the best of times, they feel lived-in, like you’re sleeping in a nest.

Did they live up to your expectations? Yes. I don’t know if it is the quality or the prints, but Piglet bedding has serious English cottage vibes that make me feel transported. Whenever I put on these sheets, I have a completely new state of mind that puts me at ease. I mean, you really can’t go to bed angry when your bed is this beautiful.

Would you recommend these to a friend? I am actually recommending these to my mom. She loves a good cotton bed sheet set, and this one is like cotton-plus. The linen really takes it up a notch in terms of the cushiness and coziness.

For Hot Sleepers

  • Photo: Lauren Arzbaecher

Sijo AiryWeight Tencel Sheet Set

Specs

  • Thread count: 300
  • Material: 100% lyocell derived from organically grown eucalyptus in Austria
  • Colors available: Blush, clay, dove, fog, forest, ivory, sage, sapphire, snow, storm, stripe, teal
  • Warranty information: 30-day sleep trial.
  • Washing instructions: Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water with like colors. Tumble dry on low. Remove promptly. For the best results, avoid using fabric softeners, bleach, or washing with anything rough that could cause excess pilling, like wool dryer balls, items with zippers, or Velcro or rough fabrics, the brand advises. Another note from the brand: Don’t forget that some pilling is normal for natural fibers.

Upsides

  • Supple and smooth texture
  • Our tester says this More resistant to shedding than some cotton bedding
  • Great for keeping cool in warm months and layering without overheating during col months

Downsides

Might be less ideal for shoppers looking for a textured bedspread like linen

Reviewer: Lauren Arzbaecher, shopping producer

What attracted you to these sheets? The fact that they are made from 100% eucalyptus fibers. Similar to bamboo sheets that I’ve tested, these felt silky to the touch, but not so slippery that it didn’t feel cozy in bed. One of my favorite things about eucalyptus sheets is that they don’t suffer from pilling as much as cotton or linen options do over time. I’ve washed these sheets many, many times and they still have the same slick texture.

What’s it like sleeping on them? What I’ve loved most about sleeping on these sheets is the lightweight construction of them. I’m a big blanket user, and I prefer my sheets on the thinner side so I can pile on additional layers without overheating. Sijo’s sheets feel thin but still substantial enough to hold up to regular washings.

Did they live up to your expectations? All year-round, the eucalyptus feels soft and supple. It’s breathable enough that even bundled up underneath a duvet and blanket, I’m not sweating to death. After using cotton sheets for so long, I now lean more towards eucalyptus as my preferred sheet material, in no small part because of these sheets.

Would you recommend these to a friend? Yes! For not too high of a price tag, these sheets feel really well-made: They’ve stayed smooth wash after wash, and I’ve had no issues with wear or stitches coming loose.

How We Tested

At AD, we don’t test in a lab or scientific vacuum—we test them in our very own homes. Why? Because that’s where you’ll be using them too. Each of the sets in our Sleep Week roundups has been washed, dried, and slept on for countless nights by our editors and writers to ensure that we’ve put them through the ringer of everyday life. The sets are selected to reflect a variety of price points, materials, and styles and we pride ourselves in giving each set first-hand, real world use. Here’s a few of the questions we asked our testers.

FAQs

What Should I Avoid When Shopping for Sheets?

No one knows your sleep like you—when shopping for a new set it’s important to keep in mind what your dream sleep setup looks like or if you have any needs that influence the products you use. For example, if you have sensitive skin, a 100% cotton set (like our Parachute or Boll & Branch picks) is more up your alley. If you need something cooling in your arsenal, a flannel or cashmere blend set may be out of the question. In terms of materials, we think it’s worth investing in high-quality shams—especially since you’ll (hopefully) be spending a solid eight hours a night on these textiles. One of the many reasons you won’t find any synthetic fibers on our list.

What Should I Look for When Shopping for Sheets?

As you can see from our list above, there are several materials to choose from, and the choice you make is largely up to your own preferences. For example, if you’d like a luxe, silky sleep setup, opt for bamboo or sateen. If you would like crisp bedding that mirrors that of a high-end hotel, percale is likely for you. Once you make your selection, keep these other below factors in mind.

Durability: Look out for thread counts to assess your bedding’s durability. Generally, somewhere between the 300 and 600 range reflects high-quality construction that feels soft and can outlast wash after wash.

Comfort: Comfort can be subjective, but look at each of our sections above on materials like linen, percale, and more to determine what set would feel most comfortable to you.

Design: As experts in design, we’re not only on the hunt for the best bedroom furniture but we’re also searching for stylish options to match any aesthetic. Many options are available in patterns like this Petite Plume timeless toile set, but you can find others like scalloped or floral designs for a whimsical bedroom and gingham bedding for a cottagecore-inspired space.

How Often Should I Wash Sheets?

Mary Gagliardi, Clorox’s in-house scientist and cleaning expert (also known as Dr. Laundry), recommends washing your sheets once a week. However, if you’re not a hot sleeper, Brooklinen’s design director Katie Elks says you can push it to two weeks before tossing your linens in the washer and dryer.

And though you might be tempted to run bedding on your regular wash settings, Gagliardi recommends using the hottest water possible for cotton, satin, and polyester. For linen bedding made of flax, she says “care instructions typically recommend the delicate cycle, with lower agitation and spin speeds that help reduce wrinkling—which is good but also means washing with cold water, which is less effective at cleaning.” Also, hand-wash silk pieces unless the care instructions note that they are durable enough for a delicate or hand-wash cycle.

How Long Do Sheets Typically Last?

With the right care, a good pair of sheets can last at least three years. The biggest thing to keep in mind is routine care.

How Can You Make Your Sheets Last Longer?

It’s always a good rule of thumb to look at the care label for the sheets, as even if the material is similar to another set in your linen closet, brands have different wash and dry instructions. As we mentioned above, some settings that can help prevent excess wear are delicate wash cycles as well as tumble dry low settings.

Should You Iron Your Sheets?

Overall, we don’t think it’s necessary. Some have delicate materials that can wear from high, direct heat contact from ironing. For this reason, we either recommend steaming your sheets or allowing them to air-dry immediately after washing to help keep wrinkles from setting in. However, if you’re set on ironing, be sure to use a low setting if possible.

How Do I Fold a Fitted Sheet?

Folding a fitted sheet is a challenge in and of itself, but follow our key pointers below to nail it every time:

  1. Place your hands in the two top corners of the fitted sheet along the long side across your body. Make sure the elastic side of the sheet (not the fabric side) is facing you, then hold the fitted sheet out in front of you.
  2. With both hands inside the fitted sheet pockets, grab the inside of the right corner with your fingers and invert it. (If you’re left-handed, our team says it might be easier to start with the left-hand corner.) Heads up: Your sheet will look a bit skewed, but that’s okay.
  3. As you’re holding on to the inverted corner with your fingers, find the inside of the left corresponding corner and fold the inverted (right) corner into it. Note: The corner seams should touch.
  4. Lay the sheet on a flat surface and straighten the edges. This side of the sheet should look like an L. Now look to the other side and repeat step 3. You should now have a U shape, with the elastic running lengthwise at the top.
  5. Insert your hands into one of the pockets again. Notice that it has two layers now. Find the elastic corner, pinch with your fingers, and invert as you had done in step two.
  6. Take the inverted side and connect it to the opposite corner, as you had done in step three. You’re back at the L shape, but now it should be four layers thick.
  7. All four corners should be stacked together; if they are not, rearrange them with your hands and smooth the sheet as much as possible. Pushing out the extra air will make the next steps much easier.
  8. Lay the bed linen down on a flat surface and smooth out the wrinkles again. Take the straight edge of the sheet and fold it toward the elastic band about halfway.
  9. Fold over again to the opposite edge of the flat edge. Depending on the size of your sheet, you should have a narrow rectangle. At this point you can fold as you would with any flat sheet, folding over in doubles or thirds, depending on your storage space.
  10. Given that a fitted sheet with an elastic is bulkier overall, try to smooth out the air as you fold for the most compact storage without messy bunching. Stack the fitted sheet with other sheets in your linen closet.

More AD-Approved Sheets

From soft, relaxed sets to crisp, cooling varieties—we’ve tested and reviewed all of the best sheets to shop now:

  • Best Linen Sheets: For linen lovers or the linen curious, read on for our favorites. Linen is a fantastic material to sleep on. Why? It’s naturally bacteria-resistant, ventilating, moisture-absorbing, and hypoallergenic. A linen sheet set is especially great for hot sleepers, as the sheets breathe easily and will keep you cool through the worst that a summer heat wave has to throw your way. Despite being such a light and airy material, certain variations can also be thick and hardy for cooler weather as well. And even though linen tends to wrinkle for that gently lived-in look, we consider that part of the charm. There are plenty of affordable options on the market as well, so you don’t have to lump these in the steep investment category.
  • Best Bamboo Sheets: We really love the Cozy Earth set mentioned above, and we also tested more top picks here. This material tends to resemble silk because of the smooth fibers, however, they’re more durable and have easier care instructions.
  • Best Percale Sheets: These options are perfect for warm nights and cool days. Crisp and smooth, cotton percale sheets are a great option for hot sleepers. High thread counts for this type often exceed 200, resulting in a tight weave that gives the bedding a sturdier feel. Despite the added heft, they’re still incredibly airy and moisture-wicking. Woven in a cross-cross pattern, percale sets are made from high-quality or long-staple cotton. Percale sets are sometimes made with cotton mixed with other materials like silk or rayon, which give them a silkier feel. One of the other perks of percale is that this material pills less than others, like the Petite Plume Timeless Toile Set we’ve tested and approved in our “how we tested” video listed above.
  • Best Sateen Sheets: Sateen distinguishes the weave and finish, not the material (they’re still cotton after all). Made of a looser weave and thick yarn, cotton sateen sheets often have a slightly silky and smooth texture, like the Sferra Giotto Fitted Sheet we mention in the “how we tested” video in this story. This is due to the long cotton fibers being soaked in lye, sealing the fibers and giving them added durability.
  • Best Cotton Sheets: While we’ve already touched on percale and sateen weaves, you’ll still want to keep the material of the fibers in mind. The most popular cotton sets are made of Pima cotton, supima cotton, or Egyptian cotton. Each of these can produce quality bedding, but there are a few subtle differences. Pima cotton has extra-long silky fibers. Supima cotton is pretty much the same as Pima, the main difference is that Supima refers to U.S. grown cotton versus Pima that’s sourced worldwide. Egyptian cotton fibers are extra-long yarn and more fine than typical cotton, and it is prized for its durability and breathability
  • Best Cooling Sheets: Eucalyptus, linen, bamboo, cotton, and hemp are the most common cooling sets for a bedspread. For some, sleeping is always a sweaty activity—no matter the season. For self-identified hot sleepers, beeline for sets made of materials like breathable cotton or bamboo, linen, and moisture-wicking eucalyptus fiber.
  • Best Sheets on Amazon: Treat yourself to an easy bedding refresh. Our editors have shared tested and approved affordable sets on this e-tailer from trusted brands, like Doz by Sijo and California Design Den that have sheet offerings made with nearly all of the aforementioned materials.
