Simon Barratt reposted thisSimon Barratt reposted thisAll eyes are on No 11 today as Chancellor John Healey prepares to deliver the first Budget of the Burnham Government. He faces a complex challenge - factors like the war in Iran and sluggish domestic growth have cut his "headroom" from a reported £23bn over the Summer to just £12bn. The cost of Government borrowing has risen sharply along with gilt yields and the OBR has once again cut growth forecasts, this time to just 1.1%. That's the economics, but the politics are challenging too. This is the first opportunity for the Government to put it's money where it's mouth is on Devolution, while commitments on Social Care will require nothing less than a wholesale re-engineering of our approach to Pensions. At the risk of being reductive, the Exchequer needs more money in the form of tax receipts, if the Government is to make good on it's ambitions. This is why Ukie has structured our budget proposals to Government around a set of fiscal measures designed to boost growth without requiring a huge capital outlay. Our thinking is this: supporting games, and particularly games SME through enhanced tax reliefs and "catalysing" grants is a low-cost, high-return option for HM Treasury. Because games studios are in every town and city, boosting our capability for growth precisely hits the Government's stated ambition for "growth in every postcode". We know that small studios are more resilient to financial downturns, and constitute the "backbone" of an industry that delivers in excess of £6bn back to the UK economy - both in terms of real tax receipts, jobs created and local economic activity. There are no magic bullets here, just solid economics. You cannot cut your way to growth - you have to build confidence and create the right kind of environment for growth to happen. Boosting SME across the UK, particularly high growth-potential creative digital SME with a clear export path is exactly the kind of smart policy Treasury is looking for. It's an uphill battle - the mood music is "Treasury says no", but even if we can secure some concessions on the modernisation of VGEC, the better to reflect how games are made today, it will open a door for structured dialogue around the next Governmental Spending Review. So we will be watching the Budget carefully, after months of dialogue with officials and elected representatives. Will the Chancellor take the opportunity to boost one of the UKs true growth industries? We will know very soon. https://lnkd.in/egTeQUr5UKIE calls on government to modernise Video Games Expenditure Credit ahead of Autumn BudgetUKIE calls on government to modernise Video Games Expenditure Credit ahead of Autumn Budget

Simon Barratt posted thisGreetings Ukie members - voting is now open for the board elections, and I’m standing for re-election. I’ve been proud to continue serving, representing independent studios, regional businesses and smaller developers and publishers. If re-elected, this will be my final term before taking the required two year break (that I helped bring in a long time ago, turkeys Christmas etc!) I’d love the opportunity to continue bringing an independent, technically informed voice to Ukie. This feels particularly important as our industry navigates AI, online safety and the need for stronger regional support! Thank you :)

Patterns emerge. At Mythique-Summit 2026, we brought together 45 leaders for 2 days of closed-door Think Tanks in Mykonos. We then synthesized the discussions into a set of collective observations about The Future of Games and AI. Mythique combines a curated executive retreat with structured discussions—creating the conditions for conversations that rarely happen on a conference stage. The snapshots below capture the strongest themes that emerged. ________________________________________ 🟣𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲-𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐈 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 (How do we move from AI adoption as a set of tools to an AI mindset as a company-wide way of operating?) The strongest consensus wasn't about AI tools—it was about leadership. AI transformation is fundamentally a people challenge, requiring cultural change, new operating models and deliberate governance. AI literacy is becoming a core leadership capability, while humans remain accountable for decisions. ________________________________________ 🟠𝐀𝐈 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐀𝐈 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐭 (How do we create durable organizational advantage without creating the next layer of operational, technical or cultural debt?) Competitive advantage will come less from access to AI models and more from proprietary knowledge, domain expertise and disciplined execution. Organizations that can capture, structure and activate their unique knowledge will be best positioned to create lasting value. ________________________________________ 🟢𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐈-𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨 (How do studios evolve roles, skills and culture as AI becomes an invisible colleague across the organization?) Craft remains fundamental, but it is no longer enough on its own. The highest-value professionals will increasingly combine deep expertise with judgement, systems thinking, creativity and the ability to collaborate effectively with AI. ________________________________________ 🔵𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐥𝐞 (How do we build studios that move quickly without becoming brittle, reactive or strategically scattered?) Faster development only creates value when supported by strong technical foundations, lightweight governance and metrics that reward outcomes over activity. Competitive speed will increasingly be measured by learning velocity rather than production output. ________________________________________ Across every discussion, one message consistently resurfaced: 💡AI is no longer a technology strategy. It is an operating model. 📢Valued partners: Xsolla, Endeavor This is a snapshot of the collective discussions. If you'd like to explore the themes in more depth, I'd be happy to continue the conversation. 📍I’ll be at Gamescom-DM me if you’d like to meet. #MythiqueSummit #GameDevelopment #GamingIndustry #Leadership #FutureOfGames

Seville has just hosted another remarkable edition of 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 (𝗚𝗘𝗦𝗘). What makes this gathering special is not simply the experience or influence of the people around the table. It is their willingness to put that experience to the test. At a time when many of the industry's established assumptions are being challenged, 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲. There is also a broader ambition behind bringing initiatives like this to Spain. Over two decades ago, Gamelab Conference helped demonstrate that Spain could be a relevant international platform for industry thinking and debate. Today, major events such as 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝗴𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰-𝗖𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮́𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮 demonstrate our ability to convene global creative communities at scale. Simon Barratt liked thisSimon Barratt liked thisAs many of you know, we are currently in Seville for this year's Games Executive Summit Europe. Following yesterday's tragic train accident on the high-speed railway line connecting Madrid and Andalusia, I want to reassure everyone who knows we are here that, fortunately, all our participants are safe and well. But it is impossible not to feel deeply saddened by what has happened. We have spent these days together, reconnecting with friends, sharing ideas, celebrating our community and discussing things that matter enormously to us. And yet, not far from where we are gathered, so many people have lost their lives, families have been devastated, and others are fighting to recover. It is a heartbreaking contrast, and one that puts everything into perspective. We feel incredibly fortunate to be here together, but our hearts are with those who have suffered such unimaginable loss. On behalf of everyone at Games Executive Summit Europe, I want to express our deepest sorrow, sympathy and respect for the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this tragedy. We wish, more than anything, that none of this had ever happened. Our thoughts are with you.

Simon Barratt liked thisNo games news doesn’t mean no news for games. I’ve spent longer reading between the lines of today’s Budget than is strictly healthy, and the most important line for our industry wasn’t about games at all. With fiscal headroom this tight, sector-specific measures were unlikely. But the scale-up announcements caught my eye, and I think they make the case for a UK Games Scale-Up Fund a lot stronger. A few things worth the extra coffee: 1. The Government is now making our argument for us. The new scale-up programme for female founders and the British Business Bank doubling its commitment to women-led businesses come from the same place: UK companies are great at starting up, then struggle when they need growth capital. Add in the new 10% Founders’ Relief on up to £10m of lifetime gains from April 2027, the tripled trading allowance and the young entrepreneurs allowance, and founders get a real boost at the start and at the finish. But from our work with members, it's clear that the hardest part for most studios is the bit in between: turning a first hit into a business that lasts. That’s exactly the gap a games fund through the British Business Bank would fill. It wouldn’t be a new idea for the Treasury either. It would build on something they’ve already backed, which is a much easier conversation to have. 2. Skilled Worker visa reform got a mention, but no detail. That’s actually good news, because there’s still time to shape it. Studios rely so heavily on international talent that getting this right could make a real difference. Overall, the VGEC asks haven’t gone anywhere: 39% on 100% of qualifying spend, a 53% Games Growth rate for projects of £15m or less, and a credit that reflects how games are actually made today. A Budget this focused on growth only makes them more relevant. A quiet Budget isn’t a closed door. It tells you which doors are open. Ukie #superchargeSimon Barratt liked thisUkie's response to today's HM Treasury Autumn Budget: The UK helped invent the modern video games industry and today, we have some of the best developers in the world, creating games played by hundreds of millions of people. We welcome the Chancellor’s focus on backing British enterprise and innovation to drive growth in every part of the country, and measures announced today, such as the new Founders’ Relief and the young entrepreneurs allowance, will help the next generation of founders, including in games, take their first steps. But other countries are working hard to attract the next generation of games businesses, investment and jobs, and we had hoped to see more targeted support for an industry with such huge potential for growth. Ukie has consistently called for improvements to the Video Games Expenditure Credit, better access to finance and more support for UK games businesses looking to grow and compete internationally. We will continue making the case for these changes and working with Government to ensure the UK remains one of the best places in the world to make games. https://lnkd.in/ebhWFkRT

Simon Barratt liked thisSimon Barratt liked thisAfter months of waiting, I'm both mind blown and ecstatic to be able to make this announcement: I have been elected on the Games Committee for BAFTA! This is genuinely one of the biggest achievements of my career, and I’m so thankful for everyone that voted for me. I aim to use my time to continue supporting a more equitable, diverse and inclusive industry, and be a champion for indie games. As a queer immigrant with a working class background, I’m proud to represent a voice that’s all too important and too often forgotten about in the screen industries. I don't take this role lightly, and I will work hard to represent our industry well. In a world slowly getting overtaken by populism, culture is our biggest weapon to fight back. I am deeply passionate about the voice that storytelling through games offers us. We are the only medium that offers people to walk inside someone else’s shoes, literally. Too often, we think of games as entertainment, but we do so much more than that! There is a level of being able to offer levity in quite a heavy world, but, importantly, we continue telling stories. Stories of people who get forgotten, stories of cultures near and far. Games can be art, and our cultural power is here to stay! And to end it on a slightly soppy, more personal note, it’s hard to believe that escaping homelessness led me to one day serve on the committee for the biggest cultural influence in the UK. It's easy to get bogged down with the day to day, but sitting in an iconic cinema yesterday, I had my reminder that my journey's just begun, and a feeling of pride that everything I fought for led to this moment.

We started the evening with a conversation on the importance of community, and how meet-ups like these open the doors of opportunities to new and seasoned devs alike. I had a chance to have many conversations with people about the impact the of POC in Play meet-ups had and the hope it brings to them to see them coming back. Raise the Game will continue supporting the meet-ups in the future, and I cannot wait to see how the collaboration between POCinPlay & Melanin Gamers will strengthen them! WARDOGS Retention Statistics 📊 D1 80.6% D3 92.3% D7 98.5% This is a lot higher than we expected if we’re honest. Interested to see where D30 ends up, we don’t see WARDOGS having the same longevity as Helldivers or ARC Raiders, the lack of PVE and how approachable those games are comparatively harms it. But sales are holding as we start getting close to 2.5m units..
