Jennifer Estaris reposted thisJennifer Estaris reposted thisScientists at Stanford just accidentally discovered something crazy! A way to bring dying, bleached coral back to life. It started by accident, when two bits of coral fell against each other in a lab tank. One was healthy, one was bleached and dying. But where they touched, the colour came back. So researchers Danny Collins and Stephen Palumbi, from Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability , tested it properly. They placed bleached coral against a healthy one from the same colony, and the two fused together. The healthy coral then fed its life-giving algae straight into its dying neighbour. Within seven weeks, it had fully recovered! Its early days, and it only works with genetically identical corals for now. But with reefs vanishing around the world, its a brilliant glimmer of hope of bringing coral reefs back to life!

It was wonderful getting to watch Adna Ahmed host this event. It was a blessing getting to hear each founder introduce themselves and their businesses, to a room full of alumni, investors and partners, pitching what problems they're finding solutions for. I was blown away by every business... from tech for wheelchair users, tech for speech impediments, to tech for children who need prosthetics, and tech for people with visual impairments, and neurodivergent jobseekers. I had a phenomenal time getting to know chinny O. the founder of Befabulous technology - a strong, female, disabled founder, doing amazing things with technology! She won woman in tech Entrepreneur of the year 2026 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤❤ and I can't wait to see how much more Chinny achieves! An absolute force to be recond with - definitely one to watch!! There was a great lineup of speakers. We heard from Christine Hemphill, FMRS, Ryan Hoare 🟠, Luke cook, Jamie Chan-Pensley, Hardeep Rai, and Jean Marc Feghali. I was really touched by Hardeep Rai's talk about his business journey and hearing why he invests in disabled founders. It's also wonderful to see Motability Foundation, Motability Operations Ltd and HSBC Innovation Banking backing this year's CREO cohort. Investors - if you're looking for a business to invest in... Jennifer Estaris liked thisJennifer Estaris liked thisWhat does it take to build a more sustainable way to play? ⬇️ LEGO is one of the world’s most recognizable brands, built around plastic bricks designed to last. That durability is part of their appeal, and it makes the shift to lower impact materials difficult. Alternatives have to meet the same demanding standards for safety, quality and durability, at the scale LEGO needs. Brand Finance ranked LEGO fifth among the world’s strongest brands in 2026. LEGO’s 2025 Annual Report describes how the company is addressing that challenge. It estimates that renewable and recycled sources accounted for 52% of the raw materials purchased for brick production, excluding colourants, up from 33% in 2024. The estimate includes certified mass balance and segregated materials. LEGO also set emissions reduction targets for 2026 and 2028 with 52 high impact suppliers, who represent almost half of its Scope 3 emissions. The company is making changes at its factories too. It added 8.6 MWp of solar capacity in Hungary, more than 200% above 2024, and its new Vietnam factory opened with 7.3 MWp of rooftop solar. LEGO aims for that site to run on 100% renewable energy from 2027. In Monterrey, the factory used more than 150,000 m³ of treated wastewater in 2025, while a factory in China cut hazardous liquid waste by 90%. The report also documents how LEGO uses play in its work with children and communities. Its social responsibility initiatives impacted 11.7 million children in 27 countries. Build the Change involved more than 100,000 children in over 25 countries, and more than one million children have benefited from the LEGO MRI Scanner programme. The company’s market based total greenhouse gas emissions rose 0.2% in 2025, while emissions from purchased goods and services increased 12% as sales grew. LEGO will need to show that its changes to materials, manufacturing and supply chain can reduce its absolute emissions as the business expands. I mapped several of the report’s actions and figures in the diagram below. Source: the LEGO Group, Annual Report 2025

I'm not proud of it, but I'm learning to own it. Today, I'm a disabled female founder and the CEO of my own game development studio & creative hub. I carried survivor's guilt through most of my life. I hid my journey because I feared judgment, and I used to hide my past from investors. Now it's one of the first things I tell them. The streets taught me to read people in seconds, manage risk, negotiate under pressure, and build something from nothing. My skills and hustle was never the problem. The direction was. The environment was. My support system was. And the guilt? I've stopped letting it keep me small. I use it to build something worth surviving for. Your past isn't your ceiling. Jennifer Estaris liked thisJennifer Estaris liked thisMy Audubon Coastal Leadership Program capstone event, Coastal Curiosities, SOLD OUT! 🐚🦀🌊🐙✍️🦉 We gathered together to explore our local coastline through nature journaling, tidepooling, and birdwatching. For some, it was their first time trying these activities! Richard Louv said, “We cannot protect something we do not love, we cannot love what we do not know, and we cannot know what we do not see.” That quote captures part of why I wanted to create this event. Someone told me that they would normally just walk over rocks like these, not knowing there is so much life in their pools. Someone else told me they often forget that LA has beautiful nature, and this was a much-needed reminder. Sometimes, the first step toward caring about nature is simply experiencing it in a new way. Slowing down and spotting a cute bird. Discovering a tiny tidepool creature. Pausing to capture a moment in a journal. This is why it was so rewarding to see people show up, get curious, and connect with the nature around them!

For a long time, the games industry struggled to name the value of play beyond entertainment. But designers were already using play to explore empathy, identity, learning, and meaning - our institutions just lagged behind. In the early 2010s, while serving on the BAFTA Games Committee, I helped introduce the Games Beyond Entertainment category - not to a define a new genre of game, but to acknowledge what was already out there. The inaugural award went to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice - a moment that felt less like a win, and more like a line being drawn. A signal that play could hold emotional weight, invite difficult conversations, and still belong at the heart of the medium. Huge congratulations to this year's category winners - Julián Cordero and Sebastian Valbuena - for Despolote, a truly beautiful game about an 8-year-old, his home and football. The Games Industry needs more of this. Everyone go play!

As the world’s leaders prepare to gather in Brazil for COP30, the games industry took its own stand for the planet this week at Playing for the Planet’s Green Games Summit and Awards. This confluence highlights that while politics may change, science does not: the (still) inconvenient truth is that the planet is heating up – and it’s up to us all to work to cool it down through collaboration. https://lnkd.in/ewD7hAf2

Digital leadership in games report inadequate institutional support. Most rate current company-provided training (74%) and third-party resources (60%) as insufficient. Despite this, nearly all digital leaders (96%) independently seek professional development. I'm proud to say we are now building these resources. I hosted last week's Green Games Summit on behalf of Playing for the Planet. I left with thoughts about how games can influence both the climate conversation and our political discourse. Three micro-talks shaped my thinking: 🗣️ Wolfgang Blau made a powerful argument that games can play a role in tackling climate misinformation. Whether it is accurately representing energy systems in games (e.g. let's run over heat pumps in Grand Theft Auto VI) or challenging misinformed language about the climate, Blau thinks that game makers can tell stories capable of capturing the imagination through the ages. 🌳 The conversation around the climate crisis is becoming increasingly polarised, even as concern rises (and falls) with the mercury. But Andrew Fowler at More in Common believes that reframing the climate crisis around action to support nature could close the divide, with "the Attenborough effect" uniting the British public on the topic. 🏔️ And Alice Ourliac of The Game Bakers demonstrated how game developers can embed nature into their games in ways that motivate real-world action, showing how Cairn – the company's hit mountain climbing game – reconnected players to nature through subtle rewards for doing things like picking up your litter during the ascent to the peak. When people discuss the way games influence the world, there's too much of a tendency to focus on the impact of content alone. As the Green Games Summit showed, the true power of games is found in the communities they build. Shaping the language, norms and culture of those groups, who often sit right in the middle of the digital discourse shaping wider society, can therefore have a powerful impact on the world at large.

The games industry is navigating climate change, economic pressure and technological upheaval at once. How it stays resilient is the question behind this year's Green Games Summit. Presented by Playing for the Planet, it takes place at BFI Southbank (British Film Institute (BFI)), London, on Thursday, 17 September. We are among the partners supporting it. The Summit examines resilience across three connected areas: our people, our industry, and our planet. It is for everyone working on sustainability in and through games. The programme combines keynotes, workshops and open discussion, focused on what the industry can put into practice. Registration and details in the comments (in-person capacity is limited). Both the Green Games Summit and the Playing for the Planet Awards are being delivered in partnership with BFI and Liquid Crimson 🤘 and with support from Dutch Games Association, game – the German Games Industry Association, GAME ONLY, IIDEA, Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA), Neogames Finland ry, Ukie & Video Games Europe
