We’re thinking about food, and not because it’s nearly lunchtime. Food systems have a major impact on nature – but they can also help build its resilience. For the #GreenGameJam 2027, we’re asking studios to explore resilient food systems and what that means to their players. Activating players globally to protect & restore our planet whilst accelerating decarbonisation in video games.
About us
Playing for the Planet is a membership-based alliance activating players globally to protect and restore our planet whilst accelerating decarbonisation across the video games industry. Founded in 2019 at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York, the initiative is facilitated by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and has more than 50 video games organisations members from around the world. The initiative is designed to help those active in the games industry to start their sustainability journey and to level up those already on it. Playing for the Planet produces year-on-year reports on member progress and provides resources, research and guidance in areas such as decarbonisation, target setting and storytelling within games to inspire environmental action. Playing for the Planet organises the popular and commercially successful Green Game Jam, an annual challenge that invites video game studios with live games and existing audiences to create themed in-game content that engages players on a key environmental topic.

🗓️ Once Human went live with their Green Game Jam 2027 campaign eight months ahead of schedule, and we said ‘Go for it!’ When we shared the ‘Stories of Resilience’ theme for our next Green Game Jam, Once Human saw an amazing tie-in with their Isles of the Abyss expansion. They took an opportunity to connect the Green Game Jam 2027 campaign to a launch that was already on the calendar. The only challenge? The next Green Game Jam goes live in June 2027. Isles of the Abyss went live this month. But we encouraged the team to go for it anyway, because waiting for the perfect moment is how action stalls. From October 21 to November 20th, in the campaign ‘Mr Wish’s Driftpost’ Once Human players can read real-life stories of resilience shared by their fellow players. They’ll see how people like them are acting in everyday ways to preserve nature, protect their communities from extreme weather, and support sustainable food systems. And when they’re done, they can send their own stories adrift on the ocean for others to find and be inspired by. The NetEase Games team is activating players to normalise conversations about action within their player communities. And your team can do it too. We’re still looking for games that can activate their players on resilience in June 2027 by asking them to share their personal stories. If you run a live game with an existing audience and community features, there’s still time to join us for next year’s Green Game Jam. Register your interest now 👉tinyurl.com/ggjform And if you want to see the incredible stories Once Human players are already sharing, check their Discord 👉 https://lnkd.in/gDgD3xBK

What happens if we get AI wrong? 🎮 Not just technologically. 🫂 Not just ethically. 🌳 But environmentally. The games industry has a chance to engage with these questions now, rather than trying to solve them later. Our “AI, Games, and the Environment: A Responsible User's Guide” created in collaboration with GRID-Arendal, launches today. 🌱 Get involved with the conversation and explore the guidance: https://lnkd.in/ekv83C3B

The themes for the 2026-2027 G4C Student Challenge are here! 🎮 ⭐️ Young creators ages 8-25 worldwide will turn their boldest ideas into games that tackle real-world problems. This year they’ll explore these themes: 🌱 Bounce Back (supported by World Food Programme & Playing for the Planet): Bouncing back is all about resilience. Resilience means you can have a tough day, but you don’t stay down—you get back up and get stronger each time. This prompt challenges students to design games where people, communities, or ecosystems overcome obstacles and bounce back from hard times. 🤝 Everyone Belongs Here (supported by Sanford Harmony ): Small actions make a big difference! Inviting someone to play, being kind, or sticking up for a friend helps everyone feel like they belong. This challenge invites game designers to help others feel included by exploring how small actions—like inviting someone to play, being kind, or sticking up for a friend—can make a big difference. The G4C Student Challenge is completely flexible. Whether you’re a classroom educator, a program leader running an after-school community, or a parent supporting a young creator at home, you can easily weave this challenge into your existing programming with free G4C curriculum resources. We can’t wait to see the creative solutions and meaningful stories YOU bring to life through the power of play! Explore the themes and sign up today! https://bit.ly/G4CSC

This is where ideas turn into action 🌱🎮 Take a look back at this year’s Green Games Summit, where the games community came together to challenge thinking and explore how we can build a more resilient future for our industry, our people and our planet. A huge thank you to all our speakers, attendees and partners for making it possible (and a special shout-out to Liquid Crimson 🤘 for capturing the day). The conversations don’t stop here. Let’s keep the momentum going 🌍
