Different roulette bets: from straight up to Voisins
Chris Mwangi creates educational content focused on roulette rules, bets, odds, and payouts. At Roulette77, he works with an international team to ensure clear explanations, accurate localization, and responsible gaming standards across international and emerging regulated markets.
Choosing a roulette bet is mainly a choice between wider coverage and a higher payout. A straight-up wager targets one number and pays 35:1, whereas other options spread the stake across several numbers at once. There are also bets that do not follow the usual table pattern. Voisins du Zéro and other call bets are based on neighbouring sections of the wheel. This guide brings those formats together so you can see their coverage, payout and probability without having to work through the calculations yourself.

Inside bets
Inside bets are built around precise sections of the numbered area. Some target just one result, while others combine a few nearby numbers. Since these wagers leave most of the wheel uncovered, they offer stronger payouts but come with a lower hit rate.
Choose a bet to see where it is placed on the table and what its probability is.
Six line
The six-line wager joins two rows that sit next to each other. As each row contains three numbers, the full bet covers six outcomes. It is one of the widest standard inside selections.
Corner
A corner gives you four-number coverage with a single chip. Place it exactly where four numbered boxes meet. If the winning result belongs to that group, the bet pays 8:1.
Five-number bet
Also known as the Basket Bet, the five-number option is available only in American roulette. It covers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 and pays 6:1. The wager carries a larger house edge than most standard bets, making it mathematically less favourable.
Straight up
Straight up is the most direct single-number wager in roulette. You select one pocket and place the chip directly on it. A correct prediction pays 35:1.
Street
A street groups all three numbers from one row. The stake is placed at the edge of that row to indicate that each number is included. The payout is 11:1.
Split
A split lets two neighbouring numbers share the same stake. The chip rests on the boundary between their boxes. Either number can win, with a payout of 17:1.
Outside bets
Outside bets cover broad sections of the number range, so there are more ways for the wager to succeed. The trade-off is a smaller payout. Their clear structure makes them among the easiest roulette bets to understand.
Choose a bet to see where it is placed on the table and what its probability is.
Low / High
This wager separates the numbers into 1–18 and 19–36. You choose either the lower or upper half, giving you 18 covered numbers. On European roulette, the chance of winning is about 48.6% and the payout is 1:1.
Dozens
The dozens are three consecutive groups of 12 numbers: 1–12, 13–24 and 25–36. A winning selection returns 2:1. On a European wheel, the probability is approximately 32.4%.
Even / Odd
Even / Odd is based on the numerical property of the result rather than its colour or position. Both sides cover 18 regular numbers and pay 1:1, matching Red / Black in probability.
Columns
Each of the three table columns contains 12 numbers. Selecting one column therefore gives the same amount of coverage as a dozen. The payout and winning probability are also the same.
Red / Black
Red / Black covers every regular number belonging to the chosen colour. A single-zero European wheel gives either side a winning probability of about 48.6%. The bet pays 1:1.
Call bets
The logic behind call bets comes from the wheel rather than the table grid. Each traditional combination corresponds to a defined sector of a single-zero roulette wheel. In a land-based casino, these bets could historically be announced to the croupier, which explains the term. Online roulette usually presents the same choices on a racetrack control arranged in wheel sequence. The stake is divided among several smaller straight-up, split, street or corner wagers, so the amount won depends on the specific component containing the winning number.
| Bet | Wager type | Numbers covered | Component payout | Probability on a single-zero wheel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Voisins du Zéro | Call bet | 17 | 8:1–17:1 | 45.95% |
| Tiers du Cylindre | Call bet | 12 | 17:1 | 32.43% |
| Orphelins | Call bet | 8 | 17:1–35:1 | 21.62% |
| Jeu Zéro | Call bet | 7 | 17:1–35:1 | 18.92% |
Jeu Zéro
Jeu Zéro focuses tightly on the section immediately surrounding zero. Its seven numbers are 0, 3, 12, 15, 26, 32 and 35. The full stake is divided over four chips, including three splits and one straight-up bet on 26. That direct wager on 26 provides the largest single payout within the combination.
Orphelins
The Orphelins sector is made up of eight pockets not covered by the two main wheel groups. These are 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 17, 34 and 6. Five chips are sufficient to cover them, with four used on splits and the last one assigned directly to number 1.
Tiers du Cylindre
Tiers du Cylindre covers a 12-number run located opposite the zero area. The sequence is 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16 and 33. Six split bets make up the entire wager, so the selected sector is considerably smaller than Voisins du Zéro.
Neighbours bet
A neighbours wager allows you to build coverage outward from one number according to the wheel sequence. Suppose 2 is chosen with nine neighbours to the left and nine to the right. The selection then contains 19 pockets altogether. Instead of forming one combined bet, each of those pockets receives an individual straight-up stake.
Voisins du Zéro
Voisins du Zéro covers the broadest traditional section around zero. The included pockets are 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2 and 25. Nine chips are used to create the complete wager through a combination of splits, a street and a corner, covering 17 numbers altogether.
Special bets
Special bets connect roulette numbers in ways that are different from ordinary table groupings. A combination might follow a visible path across the grid or bring together numbers with matching final digits. Depending on the game, the player can either construct the selection manually or use a ready-made betting control.
| Bet | Betting format | Numbers covered | Payout | Probability with one zero | Probability with two zeros |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snake Bet | Special | 12 | 35:1 per straight-up bet | 32.43% | 31.58% |
| Finals en plein | Special | 3–4 | 35:1 per straight-up bet | 8.11%–10.81% | 7.89%–10.53% |
| Final Splits | Special | 6–8 | 17:1 per split | 16.22%–21.62% | 15.79%–21.05% |
Snake Bet
The sequence 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32 and 34 creates a winding line when viewed on the table. This shape is the reason for the name Snake Bet. Although shown as one pattern, the wager actually consists of 12 separate straight-up bets.
Final Splits
Final Splits use recurring number pairs and are also known as Finales à Cheval. A 3/6 version can cover 3/6, 13/16, 23/26 and 33/36. All of these are individual split bets, so any successful pair pays 17:1.
Finals en plein
Finals en plein is based entirely on the final digit of each number. Final 7 selects 7, 17 and 27, while Final 0 selects 0, 10, 20 and 30. Each pocket is covered separately with a straight-up wager, carrying a 35:1 payout if it wins.
Choosing a bet is only the first step
A large number of roulette players use several wagers together rather than treating every spin as a single choice. Those combinations often develop into complete systems. Some are designed around wider outside coverage and repeated rounds, while others rely on narrower inside selections that pay more but miss more frequently. In our separate roulette strategy guide, we put these methods into actual play, compare how they react across sessions and explain the main benefits and weaknesses of each approach.

FAQs
Normally, this is not a valid bet. Dozens, columns and other outside options have their own defined positions, so placing a chip across two areas does not create a regular split. On some American tables, the Courtesy Line is an exception and acts as a 0/00 split with a 17:1 payout.
Bets covering 18 numbers generally have lower volatility than inside wagers. Red / Black, Even / Odd and Low / High are the main examples. Their winning probability is 48.65% on a European wheel and 47.37% on an American wheel.
Straight-up and split wagers are among the more volatile choices because very few outcomes can win. Straight up covers one number for 35:1, while a split covers two for 17:1. The higher payouts come with a much lower frequency of successful spins.
You can place several bets before the same spin, even when they belong to different categories. One round might include an Even wager together with a dozen and a few individual numbers. This flexibility is also used in many roulette betting systems.
Every table has a defined staking range, and some bets can carry their own minimum or maximum amounts. As a result, the amount permitted on an outside wager may not match the limit for a straight-up bet. The table information shows the applicable limits.
