Ways to bet on roulette: from straight up to Voisins

A roulette chip can cover anything from a single pocket to a large section of the wheel. That choice changes both the likelihood of a winning result and the amount returned when the bet lands. Inside bets concentrate on fewer numbers, while outside bets spread coverage more widely. Call bets use groups taken from the physical wheel itself. Below, you can compare these formats side by side, see how they pay and understand which ones tend to appeal to different types of players.

Inside bets

Inside bets focus on a relatively small part of the numbered grid. They can cover one pocket or several neighbouring numbers, which keeps the possible return high but reduces the number of outcomes that can win. Because of that narrower coverage, inside bets usually create greater short-term swings.

Corner

A corner bet joins four touching numbers into one wager. The chip is positioned at the point where all four squares meet. Any of those numbers can complete the bet, which pays 8:1.

Straight up

Straight up means choosing one exact number. Your chip goes directly inside that number’s box, and no other pocket is covered. If the selection lands, the return is 35:1.

Six line

A six-line bet combines two consecutive rows of three numbers. This gives one chip coverage across six outcomes while keeping the wager within the inside-bet category.

Split

With a split, one stake is shared by two numbers positioned next to each other. Place the chip across their common border. A hit on either number returns 17:1.

Five-number bet

The five-number bet is exclusive to American roulette and is also called the Basket Bet. It groups 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 and pays 6:1. Its house edge is higher than that of most standard roulette wagers, so the extra coverage comes with less favourable mathematics.

Street

A street covers the three numbers running across one horizontal row. The wager is placed at the outer end of that row rather than on an individual square. A winning street pays 11:1.

Outside bets

Outside bets work with broad number groups instead of individual pockets. They pay less than inside bets because many more results can complete the wager. That wider coverage also makes them easier to follow and generally less volatile from spin to spin.

Dozens

Dozens separate the numbers into 1–12, 13–24 and 25–36. Selecting one group activates 12 possible winning numbers. On European roulette, the wager pays 2:1 and has a probability of about 32.4%.

Red / Black

Red / Black asks you to choose one of the two colours assigned to the regular numbers. With one zero on a European wheel, the probability of winning is roughly 48.6%. The payout is 1:1.

Columns

A column bet also includes 12 numbers, but they are arranged vertically rather than in consecutive ranges. Its payout and winning probability match those of a dozen.

Low / High

Low / High splits the main numbered range into equal halves. Low covers 1–18, while High covers 19–36. Each option pays 1:1 and has an approximate 48.6% winning probability on European roulette.

Even / Odd

Even / Odd groups the regular numbers according to parity. Choosing either side gives the same number of covered outcomes as Red / Black, so the probability and 1:1 payout are identical.

Call bets

Call bets use number groups taken from sectors of the roulette wheel rather than from the rectangular betting grid. Their name dates back to physical roulette tables, where a player could announce the combination to the croupier. Online versions usually place these wagers through a racetrack display arranged in wheel order. A single call bet is actually made up of several smaller straight-up, split, street or corner wagers. As a result, the return depends on which part of the combination produces the winning number.

Orphelins

Orphelins fills the gaps left by the two larger wheel sectors. Its eight numbers are 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 17, 34 and 6. Covering them requires five chips altogether. Four chips go on split bets, while number 1 is played on its own as a straight-up wager.

Voisins du Zéro

Voisins du Zéro stretches across 17 pockets around the zero side of the wheel: 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2 and 25. The full combination uses nine chips distributed across splits, one street and one corner. No other traditional call bet covers a larger part of a European wheel.

Neighbours bet

A neighbours bet starts with one chosen number and expands outward along the wheel. Each nearby pocket is backed separately rather than being grouped into one combined wager. If 2 is selected with nine neighbours on either side, for example, the bet reaches 19 numbers in total. Every covered number receives its own straight-up stake.

Jeu Zéro

Jeu Zéro concentrates on seven pockets close to zero: 0, 3, 12, 15, 26, 32 and 35. Four chips create the complete combination. Three are used for split wagers and the remaining chip is placed straight up on 26. Because 26 is backed individually, that component carries the largest payout in the bet.

Tiers du Cylindre

Tiers du Cylindre takes in the section of the wheel facing away from zero. It includes 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16 and 33. The 12 numbers are covered with six split bets, producing a narrower wheel sector than Voisins du Zéro.

Special bets

Special bets group numbers according to patterns that do not follow the usual rows, columns or wheel sectors. Some are based on how numbers appear on the table, while others use a shared digit. Players can build these combinations manually, although many roulette games provide a shortcut for placing them.

Finals en plein

Finals en plein links numbers by their final digit. Selecting Final 7 activates 7, 17 and 27, while Final 0 covers 0, 10, 20 and 30. Each number remains a separate straight-up wager. When one of the selected pockets wins, that individual component pays 35:1.

Snake Bet

The Snake Bet follows a winding route through 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32 and 34. Viewed on the betting grid, the sequence creates the snake-like pattern that gives the wager its name. The full selection is made up of 12 individual straight-up bets.

Final Splits

Final Splits, or Finales à Cheval, pair numbers instead of backing them separately. A 3/6 final can include 3/6, 13/16, 23/26 and 33/36. Each pair is placed as a split, giving the combination broader coverage than Finals en plein. A successful split component returns 17:1.

Roulette bets are only one part of the picture

Players often go beyond choosing a single wager for each spin. Many build combinations into broader betting systems, mixing different bet types according to risk and coverage. Some approaches rely mainly on outside bets and repeated spins, while others favour inside bets and accept greater volatility in exchange for larger possible payouts. We’ve created a separate guide where we test roulette strategies in real play and compare how each one performs, including its practical strengths and limitations.

FAQs

Can one chip cover two outside bets at once?

In most roulette games, no. Outside wagers such as columns, dozens, Red / Black and Even / Odd are treated as separate betting areas, so a chip cannot normally bridge them like a split. Some American tables include a Courtesy Line, which represents a 0/00 split and pays 17:1.

Which roulette bets have lower volatility?

Red / Black, Even / Odd and Low / High are among the lower-volatility choices because each covers 18 numbers. On European roulette, each has a 48.65% chance of winning. American roulette reduces that figure to 47.37% because the wheel also includes 00.

Which roulette bets produce the biggest swings?

Straight-up wagers are especially volatile because only one number can win, even though the payout reaches 35:1. Split bets are also high-volatility, covering two numbers for a 17:1 return. Both can produce longer losing stretches than broad outside bets.

Can several roulette bet types be used on the same spin?

Yes. A single spin can include several unrelated wagers. You might cover Black, place a chip on a dozen and add one or more straight-up bets at the same time. Many betting systems use this type of overlapping coverage.

Does every roulette table have betting limits?

Yes. Each roulette table sets its own minimum and maximum stakes, and individual wager categories may have additional restrictions. A table can therefore accept one minimum on outside bets and another on single-number bets. Check the displayed limits before placing your chips.
