The Directorate of Training and Doctrine (DOTD) develops and sustains doctrine, training, and education products for the operational, institutional and self-development (OISD) learning domains to enhance combat readiness and effectiveness of the current and future Army Medical Force. Creating educationally sound training products that support the current and future medical mission as the leading education and training development platform for the Medical Center of Excellence (MEDCoE). The DOTD balances and advises senior leadership on resources against requirements to ensure the institutional training and education (ITE) student load can be trained to standard across all components. Completing the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (ADDIE) processes to develop education and training products across the operational, institutional, and self-development (OISD) training domains for learning delivery.

Individual Training Products
  • Individual Tasks

    A clearly defined and measurable activity accomplished by individuals. An individual task must be produced using the construct of action, condition(s), and standard(s) to ensure the task can be assessed against established performance standards that are observable, measurable, and achievable. It is the lowest behavioral level in a job that is performed for its own sake.

  • Individual Critical Task List

    The list of critical tasks that job incumbents must perform to successfully accomplish their mission and duties. ICTL includes information that directs in which OISD domain the individual task will be taught, its skill level, and its frequency for instruction.

  • Collective Task

    A clearly defined, discrete, observable and measurable activity or action which requires organized team or unit performance and leads to accomplishment of the task to a defined standard. A collective task describes the performance of a group of Soldiers in the field under actual operational conditions, and contributes directly to mission accomplishment.

  • Training Support Package (TSP)

    A complete, exportable package integrating training products, materials, and/or information necessary to train one or more tasks or competencies. The contents will vary depending on the training site and user. A TSP for collective training is a package that can be used to train critical collective and supporting critical individual tasks (including leader and battle staff). (TRADOC Publication 350-70-14)

  • Common Core TSP

    A complete, exportable package integrating training products, materials, and/or information necessary to train one or more common core tasks or competencies. Common core tasks are the combination of common military tasks, common leader, and directed or mandated tasks for specific courses, grade levels, or organizational levels regardless of branch or career management field or program.

  • Soldier Training Publications (STP)

    A training publication that contains critical tasks and other information used to train all Army Soldiers to the same standards. It provides guidance on the conduct of individual Soldier training in the unit and aids all Soldiers in the training of critical tasks.

  • Training Circulars

    A publication (paper or computer-based) that provides a means to distribute training information that does not fit standard requirements for other established types of training publications.

  • Course Materials

    Distributed learning course materials are educational resources specifically developed to support teaching and learning in environments where instructors and learners are not physically co-located. These materials are crafted to ensure continuity, engagement, and comprehension regardless of time or place. They often include: digital textbooks and readings, pre-recorded lectures and multimedia content, learning guides and self-assessments, shared documents, discussion prompts, and group assignments to encourage interaction. The goal is to provide a cohesive, flexible learning experience that maintains instructional quality across varied delivery formats.

  • Graphic Training Aid (GTA)

    A product created to enable trainers to conduct and sustain task-based training in lieu of using extensive printed material or expensive equipment. GTAs may also increase performance during on-the-job training or as job aids.

  • System Training Plan (STRAP)

    The master training plan and training tool for a new or modified system. It is prepared to support a Training Support System (TSS) that meets the training requirements of the warfighter. It outlines the development of the total training concept, strategy, and TSS estimates for integrating the system or family of systems (FoS) into the operational, institutional, and self-development domains.

  • The Army Training System (TATS)

    A TATS course is a single course designed to train all Soldiers to the same standards and critical tasks within the Army. It includes Military Occupational Specialty – Transition (MOS-T), Additional Skill Identifier (ASI), Skill Qualification Identifier (SQI), Army leadership, functional, and professional development courses. Method of presentation delivery modes and learning environment conditions may vary in accordance with TRADOC Regulation 350-70.

  • Combined Arms Training Strategy (CATS)

    CATS are the Army's overarching strategies for training the force. The basis of the CATS program is a series of proponent-developed unit strategies describing recommended training events, frequencies, and resources required to train to standard. CATS are descriptive unit training strategies that suggest a path for a unit to achieve and sustain training proficiency. The CATS identify recommended training strategies that include associated collective tasks, training events, and the major resources to train.

  • Mission Essential Task List (METL)

    A mission-essential task is a collective task on which an organization trains to be proficient in its designed capabilities or assigned mission. A mission-essential task list is a tailored group of mission-essential tasks.

  • Collective Tasks

    An Army Battle Drill is a standardized set of procedures used by soldiers and small units in the U.S. Army to respond quickly and effectively to various combat situations. These drills are designed to train soldiers to react instinctively under pressure, ensuring that everyone knows their role and actions during a specific scenario.

  • Army Techniques Publication (ATP)

    Army Techniques Publications are one element of the overarching doctrine hierarchy of Army Doctrine Publications (ADPs), Army Doctrine Reference Publications (ADRPs), Field Manuals (FMs), and then Army Techniques Publications (ATPs) as the most focused of the doctrine publications. Each publication type targets a more narrowly focused topic providing a clear hierarchy.

  • Miscellaneous Publications

    A non-specific product type that proponents may elect to use for their products that were not developed and categorized for registration under any of the other available CAR product types.

  • Learning Technology and Multimedia Division (LTMD)

    The MEDCoE Learning Technology and Multimedia Division (LTMD) provides a support center for Army Medicine distributed learning (DL), leveraging instructional technology to support the training and education of AMEDD's premier medical force. LTMD provides support, guidance, and expertise to ensure the successful integration of DL within Army Medicine education and training. This support includes coordinating and managing DL products and services to reduce training costs, while simultaneously improving processes, access, and DL product quality.

  • MEDCoE Visual Information Division (MEDVID)

    The MEDCoE Visual Information Division (MEDVID) provides instructional video production products and services in support of MEDCOM DL training requirements and produces other types of visual information products such as documentaries, internal marketing videos, public service announcements, historical events, etc. Ensures programs and products reflect sound practices and capitalize on state of the art technology.

  • ADP 7-0: Training Units and Developing Leaders

    Army Doctrine Publication (ADP) 7-0, Training Units and Developing Leaders, establishes the Army’s doctrine for training units and developing leaders for unified land operations.

  • Field Manual 7-0: Training

    Field Manual 7-0 prepares the Army to compete, respond to crisis, win in conflict, and consolidate gains during large scale ground combat in a multi-domain environment. It provides the foundational procedures Army leaders use to train Soldiers and units.

  • Training Aids, Devices, Simulatiors, and Simulations (TADSS)

    Training Aids, Devices, Simulators, and Simulations (TADSS) is a general term that includes training instrumentation; Tactical Engagement Simulation (TES); battle simulations; targetry; training-unique ammunition; dummy, drill, and inert munitions; casualty assessment systems; training aids; and other training support devices.

  • Digital Training Management System (DTMS)

    DTMS compiles collective and individual tasks, weapons qualifications, Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), AR 350-1 mandatory training and deployment tasks.

  • Central Army Registry (CAR)

    The Central Army Registry (CAR) is a registry of training products that is accessible worldwide on the internet. Training products include: Army Traing Publications, Common Core Training Support Packages, Course Materials, Collective Tasks, Graphic Training Aides, Individual Critical Task Lists, Individual Tasks, Special Texts, Soldier Training Publications, System Training Plans, Total Army Training Systems, Training Circulars, Training Support Packages, and Miscellaneous Publications.

  • Army Training Requirements and Resource System (ATRRS)

    The Army Training Requirements and Resource System (ATRRS) is used to establish Total Army individual institutional training requirements and resources needed to man the Army, build personnel and operational unit readiness, and grow Army leaders.

    ATRRS is the starting point for locating and registering for Army Medicine courses. To search for Army Medicine specific courses in ATRRS, use the school codes provided below.

  • Army Training Information System Learning (ATIS LEARN)

    ATIS LEARN hosts a variety of medical prerequisite training, sustainment training, self-development courseware, and mandatory training.

  • Army Enterprise Lifelong Learning Center (ELLC)

    The Army Enterprise Lifelong Learning Center (ELLC) is a digital learning platform used to deliver training and education to soldiers, both in residence and remotely.

  • Joint Knowledge Online (JKO)

    Joint Knowledge Online (JKO) provides relevant, timely, and global access to joint knowledge across the joint learning continuum, supporting operational forces and Military Health Services (MHS).

  • Relias

    Relias is the US Army Medical Command (MEDCOM) enterprise solution for providing medical continuing education (CE) and continuing medical education (CME) courses for 18 clinical professions and the assignment and reporting of medical treatment facility mandatory training requirements.

The MEDCoE Doctrine Division (DD) serves as the proponent and preparing agency for MEDCoE doctrine in accordance with TRADOC Regulation 25-36, The TRADOC Doctrine Publication Program. The DD initiates, develops, coordinates, and prepares Army Health System doctrine for the MEDCoE, Joint, multi-service, and multinational doctrinal programs. The DD develops, revises, and prepares Training Circulars, Soldier's Training Publications, and coordinates the development of medical materials use in the Soldier's Manual of Common Tasks.

  • Army Publishing Directorate (APD)

    The Army Publishing Directorate (APD) is the Army’s centralized departmental publishing organization in support of readiness. APD manages, authenticates, indexes, sustains, procures printing, distributes publications, forms, and digital media.

  • Army Doctrine Publication (ADP)

    Army doctrine publications (known as ADPs) contain the fundamental principles by which operating forces and elements of the generating force that directly support operations guide their actions in support of national objectives. An Army doctrine publication provides the intellectual underpinnings of how the Army operates as a force.

  • Army Techniques Publication (ATP)

    Army techniques publications (known as ATPs) contain techniques. These publications fully integrate, nest, and comply with the doctrine contained in Army doctrine publications, Army doctrine reference publications, and field manuals.

  • Field Manuals (FM)

    Field manuals (known as FMs) contain principles, tactics, procedures, and other doctrinal information. They describe how the Army and its organizations conduct and train for operations. Field manuals describe how the Army executes operations described in the Army doctrine publications. They fully integrate and comply with the doctrine in the Army doctrine publications and Army doctrine reference publications.

The MEDCoE Lessons Learned Branch collects and analyzes lessons both best practices and issues from major operations and training exercises conducted by the operating forces; collaborates with medical subject matter experts to identify Doctrine, Organization, Training, Materiel, Leadership & Education, Personnel, and Facility (DOTMLPF) gaps and potential solutions; and disseminates lessons and best practices with the Army and the Army Medical community of practice to optimize unit and Soldier performance and effectiveness.

    The MEDCoE Lessons Learned Webpage is a one stop site for Army Medical Lessons Learned.

  • Joint Lessons Learned Information System (JLLIS)

    JLLIS is the DoD authoritative system for gathering, developing, and disseminating lessons learned for the Armed Forces that enables Joint Lessons Learned Program (JLLP) and Army Lessons Learned Program (ALLP) information and knowledge management. The JLLIS facilitates the collection, tracking, management, sharing, collaborative resolution, dissemination, and archiving of information to improve the development, design, and readiness of the Joint Force.

    Requires site registration. When registering, ensure that the Organization selected is Army >> TRADOC >> Medical Center of Excellence.

  • MEDCoE Lessons Learned on Army 365

    The MEDCoE Lessons Learned Army 365 site connects healthcare professionals across the medical community. The site hosts recent articles and briefings of interest to Army Medicine.

  • Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL)

    CALL leads the Army Lessons Learned Program and delivers timely and relevant information to resolve gaps, enhance readiness, and inform modernization. CALL's website contains many resources such as AARs, Best Practices, Handbooks, and Request for Information submission page.

The following news publications are produced by the Borden Institue, at the US Army Medical Center of Excellence (MEDCoE).

  • AMEDD Journal

    The Army Medical Department Journal provides a forum for the presentation and exchange of the most current, high level healthcare, clinical, and medical research information, as well as medically related combat experiences and military doctrine development ideas and proposals.

  • The Pulse of Army Medicine

    The Pulse of Army Medicine is MEDCoE's contribution to The Harding Project, a Chief of Staff of the Army initiative focused on revitalizing professional military discourse. Its goals include modernizing Army Journals, building sustainable editorial models, and enhancing institutional archives to support professional growth.

  • Medical Soldiers Outlook Archives

    The Medical Soldiers Outlook publication was discontinued in the Fall of 2021. This was a quarterly enlisted training information newsletter publication that provided current (at the time) information on resident and nonresident training courses, educational opportunities, doctrine revisions, and medical Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) changes and updates.
