Lord of Hatred Ending Explained

After slaying Mephisto, the Wanderer drives Lilith's dagger into him, banishing the Lord of Hatred beyond the reach of Sanctuary and the realms beyond. Yet even with Mephisto cast out, the consequences of his influence remain. The Wanderer then travels to the Tree of Whispers to grant Lorath the rest he deserves. Upon arrival, they are met by Tyrael and Taissa, the witch Lorath had once spoken of. As the Wanderer approaches, the severed heads hanging from the tree cry out in warning, their voices rising in protest. With a torch handed to them by Tyrael, the Wanderer sets the Tree of Whispers ablaze, the echoes of the damned resounding as the flames take hold.

Burdened by guilt, the Wanderer reflects on Lorath's fate, blaming themself for drawing him into the conflict. Tyrael offers reassurance, reminding them that Lorath chose his own path, regardless of the cost. As the fire consumes the tree, a chapter comes to a close. In the final moments, the Wanderer stands before Lilith's statue, pausing briefly before turning away. Tyrael reflects on Lilith's vision of Sanctuary, a fragile world born in defiance, one she believed would one day be protected by someone willing to stand against fate itself.

Eru, an ally encountered during the journey, betrays the group. Acting out of desperation to protect his homeland, he makes the fateful decision to place the Soulstone into the body of Akarat, believing it to be a vessel capable of containing Mephisto's power. Instead, this act has the opposite effect. Mephisto seizes the opportunity, corrupting the vessel and taking control.

In the aftermath, Akarat's body becomes a new host for the Lord of Hatred, allowing Mephisto to return to the physical world in a far more dangerous and subtle form. No longer confined or weakened, he is now able to walk among mortals and spread his influence more freely than before. Neyrelle survives but remains deeply affected by her ordeal, while the Wanderer is left to face the consequences of a battle that, despite all efforts, ultimately allowed Mephisto to rise again.

Diablo 4 Base Game Ending Explained

After the Wanderer ultimately defeats Lilith and prevents her from reshaping Sanctuary into a weapon, the focus shifts to Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, whose presence has been subtly guiding events from the shadows. Rather than allowing his essence to remain a loose influence, Neyrelle makes the critical decision to contain him within a Soulstone. Believing this to be the only way to prevent his corruption from spreading further, she takes the burden upon herself and departs alone, carrying the imprisoned Mephisto away from Sanctuary.

While Lilith is defeated, Mephisto is not destroyed, but only contained. The Wanderer and their allies are left uncertain of Neyrelle’s fate, as well as whether the Soulstone can truly hold Mephisto indefinitely. Neyrelle isolates herself from the others in an attempt to bear the weight of her choice. Sanctuary is temporarily saved from Lilith’s vision, but the presence of Mephisto remains a looming danger.
