Home service businesses, plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, are not the industry with the highest missed call rate. Healthcare and legal miss more. But they may be the cleanest place to study what a missed call costs, since there is zero brand loyalty when it happens.

CallRail's own benchmarking data puts the home services missed call rate at 14 percent, lower than healthcare's 32 percent and legal's 28 percent. The raw number is not actually the interesting part here.

The interesting part is what happens next. About 85 percent of customers whose calls go unanswered do not call back, per that same data. In home services specifically, that usually just means calling the next name on Google. No account history, nothing pulling them back.

Speed compounds it. The MIT Lead Response Management study, often paired with Harvard Business Review, found contact rates drop sharply once a lead sits 30 minutes instead of 5. It does not prove they booked elsewhere, just that your odds of reaching them fall off fast.

Plumbing and HVAC are examples, but the lesson is not limited to them. It applies to any business where a missed first contact loses a customer with no reason to wait around. An omnichannel AI sales agent exists because "we will call you back" was never a strategy.
