    Going to start a 2027 Chicago budget thread. Lots of numbers flying around. First: how did 2025 end up? The city ended the year with a surplus thanks to strong revenues and some underspending on programs the mayor has lauded:

    Treasurer's office estimate last week was that CPS was actually still owed $70-$80M (chicagotribune.com/2026/07/15/cps…). Districts have had to do their own math because distribution reports that say which tax year money is coming from/what's left are still held up: chicagotribune.com/2026/02/09/lib…

    NEW: CPS financial woes might be $250 million worse than initially thought, thanks to problems with Cook County. A CPS spokesperson says the County shorted the school district by a quarter billion of what it was owed from this year's first installment property tax disbursements.
