- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202601000001Description: Family indebtedness in Canada has risen over the past decade, while immigration has become the principal driver of population and labour force growth. Although previous research has examined wealth accumulation among immigrants, less is known about their indebtedness and financial vulnerability in the post-2016 period. This study uses data from the 2016, 2019 and 2023 Survey of Financial Security. It compares indebtedness among recent immigrant families, established immigrant families and Canadian-born families at comparable stages of the life cycle. Measures include total debt and its components, the debt-to-income and debt-to-asset ratios, indebtedness excluding mortgage debt, short-term credit behaviour, and the prevalence of having no financial wealth.Release date: 2026-10-28
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202601000002Description: Canada’s population growth, driven by changing levels of permanent residents and non-permanent residents, has contributed to notable demographic shifts. These changes may be placing new pressures on the education system, prompting a need to better understand how immigration trends could influence enrolment across all levels of schooling. In response, this paper examines projected changes in elementary and secondary school enrolment in Canada from 2026 to 2030, with a focus on the marginal impact of changes in immigration levels at the national and regional levels.Release date: 2026-10-28
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202601000003Description: There is ongoing debate regarding which groups of workers could be impacted by artificial intelligence (AI). One hypothesis is that AI could make existing workers more productive, thus reducing the need to hire new workers, particularly for entry-level roles. Conversely, by making some groups of workers potentially more productive, AI might induce firms to hire more of these workers. This article examines hiring and job separation rates for employees aged 15 to 64 in Canada using Labour Force Survey data from January 2006 to August 2026, distinguishing jobs based on their potential occupational exposure to and complementarity with AI.Release date: 2026-10-28

- Articles and reports: 75-006-X202600100010Description: This article examines how young Canadians aged 25 to 34 with a bachelor’s degree or higher who were not in school were faring in the recent labour market, compared with earlier periods. Using annual data from the Labour Force Survey, it tracks full time permanent work, wages, job coverage by collective bargaining agreements, pension plan coverage and overqualification. Gender differences and the impact of having young children on employment outcomes are also explored.Release date: 2026-10-28
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202601000001Description: Life expectancy at birth has increased in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries and across the globe over the past few decades, until 2019. However, this trend was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw a significant decrease in life expectancy in Canada and many other countries. This study used death counts from the Canadian Vital Statistics – Death database to decompose the life expectancy gap by cause of death in Canada between the periods of 2017 to 2019 and 2020 to 2022, by province and sex.Release date: 2026-10-21
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202601000002Description: Given that the health benefits of physical activity are well established, ongoing surveillance is important to monitor population activity levels, evaluate public health initiatives, and advance understanding of how movement relates to health. This study used seven cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey to examine temporal trends in accelerometer-measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and step counts among Canadian adults from 2007 to 2024 and to assess adherence to a range of activity benchmarks, including levels below current recommendations.Release date: 2026-10-21
