Hospital bosses have said work to build a new women and children's hospital will start soon.

Kim O' Keefe, acting chief executive of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, said the project which was announced in 2023 as part of the national New Hospital Programme, would become a reality in the next few years.

"I feel like I've been talking about this for 20 plus years and it's finally feeling real, O' Keefe said.

"We're planning to start putting spades in the ground in late 2028, finished in 2032."

In January the trust said a total of £15.5m had already been spent on the project, including design and planning, car parking provision and creating a contractors' compound.

In an update in July, it said Willmott Dixon had been appointed as construction partner for the hospital on the Treliske site in Truro.

It added the new hospital would bring acute women's, children's and maternity services together in a "purpose-built environment".

O'Keefe said: "The new plans are almost ready to launch."

"We are in the final throws of the revised business case, we have our new build partner Willmott Dixon, we've worked very very strongly with our clinical teams and our stakeholders," she added.

"It's a very different build to what was originally put forward 18 years ago," she said.
