‘Wednesday’ Star Christina Ricci Reveals The Sad Childhood Sacrifice Behind Her Complicated Feelings About Halloween

Christina Ricci has made a surprising confession about her relationship with Halloween, revealing that becoming a successful child actress came at the expense of some traditional childhood experiences.
Despite starring in spooky classics such as "The Addams Family," "Casper," and "Sleepy Hollow," the Hollywood star admitted that she rarely participated in Halloween festivities while growing up because of work commitments.
Christina Ricci says her childhood acting career limited her celebrations; however, becoming a mother has helped her rediscover the excitement surrounding the holiday.

Ricci has opened up about the unexpected reason Halloween was not a major part of her childhood, despite her long association with spooky entertainment.
In an interview with TODAY, published October 24, the 46-year-old revealed that her busy acting schedule often kept her from enjoying traditional Halloween activities. According to the actress, she often spent the holiday working instead of dressing up and collecting candy with other children.
However, she clarified that she still experienced some Halloween celebrations during her earliest years. "I did a little bit, and certainly when I was really small I would go with my family," Ricci recalled.
The revelation is particularly surprising considering that she became a Halloween icon after portraying Wednesday Addams in the 1991 film "The Addams Family."
She subsequently appeared in "Casper" and "Sleepy Hollow," further cementing her reputation for playing unusual characters in supernatural stories. Nevertheless, Ricci explained that her onscreen association with Halloween never automatically made it her favorite holiday.
The 'Wednesday' Star Makes Surprising Confession About Her Favorite Holiday
Although Ricci has spent decades entertaining audiences with spooky characters, she revealed that her personal holiday preferences are quite different. During the TODAY interview, the actress admitted that Christmas holds a more special place in her heart.
"But my favorite holiday is Christmas," she confessed. Ricci explained that she does not necessarily view her career through the same lens as audiences who associate her with Halloween.
Instead, she considers her famous supernatural films part of a much broader acting career. The star acknowledged that audiences have embraced several of her projects as Halloween classics, but she does not allow those roles to define her personal celebrations.
Interestingly, Ricci has also expressed admiration for people who embrace elaborate Halloween decorations. She revealed that she enjoys seeing oversized spiders, animated skeletons, and other extravagant displays in neighborhoods.
Christina Ricci Reveals How Her Children Changed Her Feelings About Halloween
Despite missing some Halloween experiences growing up, Ricci now has another reason to celebrate the holiday. The actress revealed that her children, Freddie and Cleopatra, have helped her develop a greater appreciation for Halloween traditions.
"Halloween has been a thing ever since I had my own kids," she told TODAY. "So now I do Halloween because of my kids, and I've really learned to appreciate it," Ricci added.
The actress shares her son Freddie with her former husband, James Heerdegen, while her daughter Cleopatra was born during her marriage to hairstylist Mark Hampton. As reported by The Blast, Ricci has continued balancing her acting career with her responsibilities as a mother.
For Halloween 2026, the star revealed that she planned to take her children trick-or-treating around their neighborhood. The celebration would also include a family gathering featuring a chili cookout after the children collected their candy.

The Actress Shares Hilarious Memory Of Her Childhood Halloween Costume
Ricci also recalled an unusual family tradition involving a Halloween costume that kept reappearing throughout her childhood. The actress explained that her mother owned a gorilla costume that was passed down among her four children.
As the youngest sibling, Ricci eventually inherited the outfit and wore it for several consecutive Halloweens. However, she found creative ways to make the costume appear different each year.
During one celebration, she dressed as a gorilla ballerina, while another Halloween saw her transform the outfit into a teenage gorilla costume. According to PEOPLE, Ricci also recalled that her mother eventually stuffed the costume with rice and displayed it inside their family home.
The actress described the unusual decoration as both strange and creepy. The memory suggests that although work sometimes interrupted her Halloween celebrations, she still experienced memorable family traditions.

According to USA Today, the two stars teamed up with Reese's to help select America's "Trick-or-Treatiest Street," celebrating neighborhoods that embrace the holiday.
Ricci praised the campaign for encouraging creativity and bringing communities together. She also revealed that Halloween celebrations have become an important part of her family's annual routine.
The Blast noted that Ricci has publicly praised Hampton's involvement in their children's lives. Her latest Halloween revelations offer another glimpse into the family's shared traditions.
