Crystal Hefner Makes Blunt Marriage Confession After Dropping Hugh’s Last Name

Crystal Hefner would take back her walk down the aisle with Hugh Hefner if she could. The "After the Mansion" podcast host speaks candidly about her marriage to the late Playboy founder, saying she questions the decision every day. Crystal did not hesitate when asked whether she would make the same decision to marry the publishing mogul. "If I could go back, I absolutely wouldn't have [married Hugh]," she told Page Six. "I came from a broken home. I didn't have a father. And I know now that Hef chose people he could easily manipulate, like that was it."
The pair married in 2012, four years after meeting at a Halloween party at the Playboy Mansion.
According to the outlet, private conversations helped bring them together before Crystal moved into the Los Angeles estate and became one of Hugh's girlfriends. She was named Playboy's Playmate of the Month for its December 2009 issue and eventually became his wife three years later.
Their marriage lasted until Hugh's death in September 2017 at age 91.

Looking back, Crystal said she believes the women Hugh pursued shared something beyond their appearance. She alleged that he deliberately chose partners whose backgrounds made them more vulnerable to manipulation. "Hef allegedly had a high IQ," Crystal continued. "I always thought, why didn't he want somebody that was at his level intellectually? And it's because those people are harder to control. So he chose the women that came from broken homes and broken backgrounds."
Crystal included her own upbringing in that discussion, linking her father's absence and her family circumstances to how she now understands the relationship.

Crystal's comments come amid a series of public appearances in which she has shared troubling allegations about life inside the mansion. During an appearance on the "Lisa Guerrero Unleashed" podcast, she described bedroom experiences that she said crossed serious boundaries.
"There were times that were really uncomfortable for me in the bedroom," Crystal said. "In the bedroom things would happen that ended up just not being OK."
She also alleged that Hugh attempted to force twins Kristina and Karissa Shannon into sexual contact with each other.

Beyond her marriage, Crystal also took aim at the public image surrounding the Playboy founder. She told Page Six that she believes Hugh's connections and influence helped keep negative coverage at bay while he was alive.
"We also need people to know how powerful this man was when he was alive, that the media wanted this man in their pocket and so they didn't really put out anything negative about Hef," Hefner told the outlet. "He was misogynistic, he was narcissistic, he was a pornographer that hurt the world."
Crystal has also been discussing the famous men who visited the mansion. Her recent remarks have included claims about Jon Lovitz and Jack Nicholson, and Lovitz later dismissed and mocked her comments. Her latest interview, however, puts her own relationship with Hugh at the center of the conversation.
Crystal Has Already Dropped The Hefner Name

Crystal's break from her former life has included a legal name change. According to Page Six, she considered whether keeping the Hefner surname could help her use the platform "to do good for the world or for women," before deciding to cut that connection.
She legally returned to her maiden name, Crystal Harris, in late 2025 and married marine biologist James Ward.
