UCL is an exempt charity under the terms of the Charities Act 2011, Schedule 3 (Statutory Instrument 1978, number 453). This status means that UCL is not required to register directly with the Charity Commission and as a consequence, UCL does not have a charitable number. As our principal Regulator, the Office for Students is charged with monitoring UCL’s compliance with charity law obligations.
UCL is incorporated as a Royal Charter body and registered at Companies House with identification number RC000631.
UCL is registered with the Office for Students. Its UK Provider Reference Number is 10007784.
Exemptions from taxation (other than Value Added Tax) are available under Section 505 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988. Gifts to University College London for charitable purposes constitute exempt transfers for Inheritance Tax purposes, both in respect of the donor and recipient. Gifts of shares attract relief from Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax.
