The write interface (manuscript) in Novelcrafter is where the magic happens. It’s the word processor that is clean and effective, allowing you to focus on your writing with no distractions. The integration with AI is just a bonus.

Anatomy of the Write Interface

Like other sections of the interface, the write interface is divided into sections.

1. View Selection and Statistics

Here you can choose the chapter, act, or snippet you want to work on. You can also decide to view your entire manuscript.

Beside this, you can see your word count, the number of pages, and the average read time for the selection you are working on. You can change reading speed and words per page in the format menu.

2. Format Menu

Change the appearance of the text in your manuscript with the format menu. You can change the font type and size, format paragraph spacing and width, and align your text. You can also customise the scene divider aesthetics.

3. Focus Mode

Remove distractions and focus on your writing with the focus mode. In focus mode, scene summaries and actions menus are hidden, allowing you to focus on your writing. In addition to going full-screen, it also hides the summaries and sidebar actions of your acts/chapters/scenes to give you more space to write.

4. Action Menus

Access the actions menu for the current chapter or act to organize your story structure. For more information see our documentation on organization.

5. Scene Summary

Add or edit the summary of your scene, and see the scene details, including the scene number, word count, point of view, and chapter summary.

6. Scene Settings

Access the scene actions menu, add labels, and assign Codex entries to your scene. You can also set the point of view for your scene, and add subtitles.

7. Add New

Add new scenes, chapters, or acts to your manuscript. You can also add a scene from the archive.

8. Story Timeline

This vertical timeline gives you an overview of your entire story. Each scene has a marker that takes you directly to its location in the manuscript. You can also get a visual overview of your scene distribution, which is helpful for larger novels.

Your current location is highlighted in the timeline for easy access. Any highlighted prose or colorized snippets are also highlighted in the timeline in the same color, allowing you to quickly locate them in your manuscript.
