Anonymous painting from the 19th century.

This vivid oil painting shows a dental extraction in a blacksmith’s forge. Set at a time when extraction of teeth was undertaken by a variety of practitioners from blacksmiths, wig makers and barbers. The figures bear some resemblance to the Mid 19th century domestic genre painters such as William Henry Knight (1823-1863) and William Henry Hunt (1790-1864) but the painting has no firm attribution.
