Harnessing the power of standards to enhance patient safety and traceability worldwide.
About us
GS1 is an international standards development organisation, best known for providing a system of unique numbers, data carriers like barcodes and information sharing standards relevant to products, relationships, assets, locations, services, and processes. Across 150 countries, GS1 standards are being used in 25 industry sectors including healthcare. Since 2005, GS1 has operated across the healthcare sector with the primary objective to enhance patient safety, and to drive supply chain efficiencies. GS1 Healthcare is a neutral and open community bringing together all related healthcare stakeholders to lead the successful development and implementation of global GS1 standards, enhancing patient safety and operational and supply chain efficiencies. The development and implementation of GS1 standards for healthcare support the industry within traceability of products from the manufacturer to the patient, contribute to detect counterfeit products, help to prevent medication errors, enable effective recalls, and support clinical processes. More than 70 countries have healthcare-related regulations or trading partner requirements where GS1 standards are being used for the above reasons as well for medicines as medical devices.

GS1 Healthcare reposted this
Today, on World Patient Safety Day, we are publishing our new independent Scan4Safety evidence report, "Accelerating Scan4Safety adoption for safer, smarter healthcare". Ten years on from the launch of Scan4Safety, the report brings together the clearest evidence yet of how barcode scanning and GS1 standards are supporting safer care, returning time to clinical teams and helping healthcare organisations make better use of resources. It also shows that progress remains uneven. Some organisations have embedded scanning and GS1 standards into everyday care, while others are still at an earlier stage. The evidence is stronger than ever, but much of the opportunity remains untapped. The priority now is to broaden adoption across the UK health system and turn successful local practice into more consistent practice, so more patients, staff and healthcare organisations can benefit. Today is World Patient #Safety Day 2026, a time to raise awareness and take action to make #healthcare safer for everyone. This year’s theme, “#Safe care for life!”, focuses on improving the safety of care for people living with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), who may require ongoing treatment and interact with healthcare systems throughout their lives. #Patient safety risks can arise across the entire continuum of care – from prevention, early detection and diagnosis through to treatment and long-term management. Strong collaboration, trusted information, and integrated healthcare systems all play important roles in reducing harm and supporting safer care. At GS1 Healthcare, we believe that global #standards, accurate #identification and trusted #data can support #safer, more #connected healthcare systems and help ensure the right information is available at the right point of care. This World Patient Safety Day, we join the global healthcare community in supporting the World Health Organization (WHO’s) call for collective action to make care safer for people living with NCDs, wherever they receive care and throughout their lives. Together, we can help make safe care a reality for life. #WorldPatientSafetyDay #WPSD2026 #SafeCareForLife #PatientSafety #GS1Healthcare
