Earlier this month, I had the privilege of co-moderating a panel at the HIMSS AI in Healthcare Forum (shoutout to my amazing co-moderator, Sena Kpodzro!) featuring the Health AI Partnership Practice Network site leads to discuss the realities of health AI implementation in under-resourced health delivery organizations.
Over the past 10 months, I've worked closely with the Practice Network teams as they've implemented ambient AI scribes, sepsis prediction algorithms, and other tools - often while navigating significant resource and infrastructure challenges. The panelists - Michelle Oden, Sidney Robinson, Elizabeth Murumalla, Brianna Day, and Sonia Tucker - represented the diversity and dedication of safety net organizations across the country.
What’s been most inspiring throughout this program is how intentional these teams are about ensuring that the tools meet the needs of their communities. They’re not adopting AI just to stay on top of the game. Instead, they’re thoughtfully integrating it to serve patients, clinicians, and systems, all while overcoming challenges like unreliable broadband, EHR integration hurdles, and limited technical resources.
It was an honor to help facilitate this conversation, especially as part of an all-women lineup of moderators, presenters, and panelists sharing real-world insights with the broader healthcare and health IT communities.
Huge thanks to Sophie McCluskey from HIMSS for making the session possible, and to Mark Sendak, Alifia Hasan, Suresh Balu, and Stella Tran for their ongoing support and the opportunity to learn alongside this incredible team.
