AI Earnings Increase with Expertise and Judgment

The fastest-growing role for freelancers right now? AI slop cleanup. The AI promise was, "don't use people anymore, just use AI". So, millions of us chose to pay AI companies to create things for us, so we can skip having to pay actual experts. Only now, the data shows quite the opposite. We are all generating so much slop that is unusable in its outputted form that it's forcing us to hire hundreds of thousands of contractors to clean up the dump trucks of slop that we generate. We built an AI feature for Wootly. Then we removed it. One of the features we built was an AI tool to help freelancers write their profiles. In my head, great idea! Writing your profile can be difficult. AI makes writing easier and quicker... problem solved. Except we actually stopped and spoke to users about it. And the feedback changed our minds. "Everyone's profile is going to sound the same." "My personality is what makes me different." "How am i meant to make hiring decisions if everyone has used AI" And the more we heard it, the more we realised they were right. We'd built something we thought freelancers would find useful. But we'd missed something much more important: Your profile is supposed to sound like you. So we've removed it. I think there's a lesson in that when you're building a product. It's very easy to build what you think people want. It's much harder to listen when they tell you you're wrong.

A client once told me, plainly, that they were going with AI instead of me. Not because the AI was better. Because it was free, and "close enough" was good enough for what they needed at the time. I've also had the other version of that conversation. Where a client did choose me, but only after I brought my price down far enough. Neither of those moments felt good. I'm not going to dress them up as some kind of hidden opportunity. But here's what I've noticed since: clients who chose AI and came back later, needing something fixed, always had the same problem. The output looked fine until someone who actually spoke the language read it closely. Then it didn't. 🎳 I'm not saying this to gloat. I'm saying this because I think a lot of freelancers are absorbing this exact pressure right now, quietly, and wondering whether it means their skills don't matter anymore. They still matter. The market just hasn't fully caught up to pricing them correctly yet. That gap is uncomfortable to sit in. They generated an engagement ring across different models. Fable 5's version was the best of the bunch. "Still unprofessional up close though — low-effort, rounded prong design." Buttttt that's not the real story. Main takeaway: they tried swapping human evaluators for an AI judge, to cut costs. Turns out the AI judge was way toooooooo generous. It said GPT-5.5 and Opus 4.8 nailed the work 17.9% and 18.8% of the time. Real human clients? Only 6.25% and 8.33%. 👀 This time, humans won. Yeaaaa!

Businesses aren't just experimenting with AI anymore. They're becoming more specific about the outcomes they want. Upwork's Monthly Hiring Insights found searches are shifting away from broad requests like AI images and AI content creation toward more defined deliverables like AI UGC videos and AI video ads. It's a subtle shift, but an important one. Businesses are becoming more fluent in what AI can actually help them accomplish. Instead of searching for a technology, they're searching for an outcome. The "AI agency" boom is about to eat itself. Here's why. Every week, hundreds of new AI agencies launch. Most sell the same thing: "we'll automate your business" — for a one-time fee, with no recurring relationship, no measurement, no accountability. That's not a business. That's a freelance gig with a cooler name. When the project ends, the client has no reason to come back, and the agency has to hunt the next deal from zero. The agencies that survive will sell outcomes, not outputs: "we answer every lead in seconds, book your appointments, and send you a weekly report on what it made you." Recurring, measurable, tied to revenue. Here's the observation: the moat isn't the AI. The AI is a commodity. The moat is the operating system around it — the playbooks, the data, the relationship, the compounding results. Clients don't buy technology. They buy what technology does to their revenue. i got 3 high quality leads yesterday! (& 2 of ‘em were closed on the spot) For months, I’ve been watching people in my network panic about AI. "AI is coming for our jobs." "Client budgets are shrinking." "Solo Freelancers will be replaced." I agree. Some of that is true. But I stopped paying attention to these. In the beginning of 2026, I started changing how Me (personally) and our team delivers work. We started using AI to do a lot of heavy lifting. Everything got faster. (I even built my AIOS to manage everything) So yesterday, 3 new leads reached out. → I hopped on calls. → I didn't pitch harder. → I didn't lower my prices. I just showed them exactly how fast we can solve their problems. 2 of them closed before the meeting ended with 50% upfront payment. The 3rd person asked for a day. (Sending him the follow up right now) AI didn't replace me. AI made me faster at solving real problems. Clients don't care about your tools. They care about results, speed, and trust. When you can deliver in 2 days what used to take 2 weeks, clients happily pay for that. Stop worrying about AI replacing you. Start using AI to replace everyone who is too afraid to try.
